Tonight I'm going to see Insomnium.

On the one hand it's great to go out and have a few beers and see a good band on a weekday.

On the other hand, there are three support bands with doors opening at 8pm. Count them, three! So best case scenario is that Insomnium will probably hit the stage around 10:30pm at the very earliest. This is just crazy for a Thursday night. I really don't understand why metal shows have to have the headliner so late.

It was way better in London because everything finished before the last tubes, so people could get home. Headliners would go on at maybe 9pm or 9:30pm. In Australia most headliners seem to reach the stage between 10:30 and 11:30. It's just crazy.

Anyway, that's my night ahead of me. I'll let you all know what time Insomnium go on stage as I'm sure you're all dying to know.

Insomnium last night were amazing - one of the best shows I've seen certainly in the last few years.

But yes, as mentioned above I did have to leave early! They were scheduled to play from 10:40pm to 12:20am!!

12:20am on a Thursday night/Friday morning!! What madness is that. So a regular punter would likely leave the venue in the city at 12:20, probably take 30 minutes to get home if they live in the suburban ring, and be lucky to be in bed by 1:15am for a regular workday to follow. That's some serious bullshit.

I'm going to write to both promoter and venue. I left at 11:40, so I saw an hour of Insomnium before I had to pull the plug. I got home around midnight and by the time I'd drunk plenty of anti-beer water and got myself sorted for bed it was close to 12:30am.

So yeah, that's my rant and my newfound crusade. Headlining touring bands should come on at 9:30pm and be finished around 11pm. Anything later than that is stupid and makes me less likely to buy a ticket for a midweek gig in the future.

Catching up with a friend tomorrow night as part of a triple celebration, one his wife has the all clear from cancer, two he has just finished renovating his 17th Century cottage after 2 years and thirdly my promotion at work.  Restaurant booked and much ale planned!

Both of these things sound awesome. I'm excited that I finally get to visit NYC again this weekend - it's been almost a year. Wish I had more time and I'm not looking forward to the holiday weekend traffic, but I'll take it. Hoping to drink some nice beers and see some friends in familiar surroundings, and maybe even go to a museum.

Also I was up too late with a bottle of wine, and then up too early with a pounding headache. Blah. I'm sure it's only a glimpse of what awaits me later this weekend.

Spoke to a work colleague earlier, his cousin died in the Manchester terror attack this week.  Life is too short for headaches and traffic, get out their and live it.

Damn, that sucks. The whole thing is horrible. Headaches and traffic will be inevitable this weekend, but that's ok, there will be carousing somewhere in the middle.

So this is a holiday weekend for my American brethren too.

It's just a regular weekend here in Australia unfortunately.

Isn't it funny that we all go by the same structure for a working week. Five days plus two weekend days. I understand that it probably helps with international trade and all that, but I would really like to see a major country come up with an alternative. Like four days on and two days off or something.

I don't see why five out of seven days working is the golden number. Seems arbitrary to me. I vote we drop it down to four days on and three days off and see what happens for a while. I'm sure the modern scourge of stress, anxiety and depression will be reduced, and that will probably make us all more profitable, healthy, happy and wise.

Hell yes, I fucking wish. My wife doesn't even have the luxury of two days off in a row now, they're split up through the week, so we can't take overnight trips anywhere. Things will change at some point...

That seems really harsh on Mrs Alabaster. I think you need a good 48 hours to clear the head and get some rest. I guess critics would say we have the option to work part time and live off less money, but imagine if whole societies adopted the 4/3 structure. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...

It's tough. We could both use more of a break from our respective duties, but we don't have that option right now, and we'll lose family health benefits if she cuts her hours. She's getting a little burned out, but at least she loves what she does.

I love America; my sister lives there, my brother in law is American and I've been there three times and can't wait to go back. But you really do need to fix your health care system.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
