Just do what I do, live in a tiny shithole that doesn't have a yard. I haven't had to do yard work in at least 20 years. It's the best.

Believe me, that's tempting.

Returning from a week in Boston, my band The Angelic Slugs played and had a good time. Apparently we rock and are tight, I thought for years that we suck, but actually we are thought to be pretty good. I guess I'm glad, but the down side is that they will not let me play bass since it seems that I can not sing and play at the same time. They are no doubt correct, I can not play and sing at the same time, but they are a bunch of uptight pussies, so I ask you you, what is worse? anyway it's nice for this country mouse to be home.

My god, you have four cats? That's cruel and unusual punishment. As you know, I have two children and one dog. Needless to say the candles only come out after they're asleep or it's a birthday as there is nothing relaxing about this menagerie.

Objectively speaking, it's too much of a full house, but I have to say I love the fuzzy little fuckers. My wife had three when we got married, and then we took in a stray kitten during a blizzard, and she's seemed disinclined to leave for the past eight years... sadly we'll most likely be back down to three cats before too long. The oldest one had surgery for breast cancer last year, and it helped temporarily, but she's lost weight recently and she seems to be getting short of breath.

Congrats on your gig. I'm sorry I couldn't meet up with you. Come visit Lowell, we have pizza and canals!

So I'm at the metal pub but there's a big reunion gig for a band called In Extremis who were pretty big about fifteen years ago.

I have no intention of seeing the bands, but the problem is that there are already lots of people here and my regular armchair is taken. It's a big red comfortable thing.

Blasphemy. It's like Lemmy at the Rainbow without his slot machine.

Yep, I just compared myself to Lemmy....

So I'm currently sitting on one of those metal beer kegs with a cushion on it.

Edit: Got my armchair! Lemmy is back on the slots!

Kiss is on the PA and before that vintage Alice Cooper.

So tonight we're heading into the city to see a performance of Brahms's 'Requiem' and Beethoven's 1st Symphony at the Cathedral here in Melbourne. I couldn't think of a more amazing setting and it's going to brilliant.

However, we're having dinner beforehand at - wait for it - an Indian restaurant.

Now, I'm a huge lover of Indian cuisine, but getting all tarted up in our Sunday best for a classical music concert in the southern hemisphere's cultural capital and stopping off for a bloody curry on the way... It doesn't really compute. No one goes to the city for Indian in Melbourne, the culinary capital of the world.

I pushed for a French restaurant or some such, but the mistress of eternal damnation and nocturnal erotik phantasies (Mrs Requiem) went ahead and booked Indian. It'll still be fun.

And that's what's on my mind this evening. Requiem out.

Just written a  blog about free vegetables, thinking about the next one...might be about dealing with ones enemies or the sejd (ka, prana) of music. Going to get my clean laundry from the washing cellar and ending the night with some Hammer House of Horror movie or read a few chapters in "The War of The Flowers". I remember when Saturday nights meant gig time, going down to Tex Bar in Copenhagen or hanging out with friends...these day Saturday nights are just dull!!! :(

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I don't know what a sejd is or how there are enamies in music.

Sejd, prana, and ka is means life energy or life force in three different languages (Old Norse, Sanskrit, and Ancient Egyptian) but...same old, same old. But the potiential blog entry about enemies is a completelty different one - I do not have a specific music blog. So in this case those tweo things have nothing to do with eachother.

Tex Bar did not close at the time I refered to (evrn though it is shut down now), but suddenly my life got complicated...and no, I was not sent to prison for an axe murder or something like that :D...it was on a deeper personal plane, a mental transformation that was tough as hell, but worth while...and enough said about that!

The Brahms Requiem was amazing last night. 100 person choir and an orchestra. They didn't use no backing tracks neither! *see backing tracks thread in General Discussion forum*.

Edit: Just realised my username is Requiem. Oh snap.

Be warned this is a bit of a ramble that most here won't be overly interested in.

The first serious game of AFL played outside of Australia and New Zealand was a real fizzler. The venue presented well and turf was in excellent condition by all reports. A shame then that the actual game attracted only ex-pat Aussies and a travelling contingent of some seven thousand Australians. On top of which it was far from the spectacle this great game can be. From very early in the peice anyone who knows the game could see who was going to win and barring a near impossible goal in the second quarter none of our game's hallmarks were on display.

Bearing in mind the effort which went into making this event happen the overall result was underwhelming. Whilst I am thrilled Port Adelaide won so emphatically I can't help but wonder if a closer and more free-flowing affair may have improved the chances of AFL actually catching on in China.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
