It's cool you'll have the space for your gardening. I imagine it'll take at least fifty years to grow and train your signature carnivorous hedges, to say nothing of imbuing any local trees with the proper twisty and gnarled sense of grim foreboding.

Once we move to our next place, I'll have a yard for the first time in about 17 years...

You have another move pending?

Yeah. Just across town. I'm ambivalent about it - the next place is bigger, and I'm not in love with our current area, but it will be more expensive, I hate moving, and my wife won't be able to get any time off work. We were initially only supposed to be in the current apartment until this past November, but one thing and another have pushed the date back a couple of times.

The yard will be cool. Looking forward to getting a little grill, and sitting around outside with some beer and a bunch of burned meat.

We need to all find an island, claim it and set up a Metal Forum Commune!  We should take only our established and regular members but still leave the channel open for the occasional newbie otherwise me and Req are gonna be hungry.

No offense to all of the dudes on here, but we need to open up the ranks with some more ladies before thinking of pursuing that initiative.

So...did anyone saw Wintersun's crowdfunding project? The safe goal was reach after 24 hours...daamn.
And the teasers of the new album...stunning!

I'm a little late here, sorry, but this is too good to pass up.

The whole Wintersun saga is one of the funniest in recent metal history. First album in 2004, then the fact that 'Time 1' (2012) took soooo long to come out, and then there was no 'Time 2'. Then Jari wrote that big whiney message about not being able to make albums due to money or whatever it was. It was just hilarious. And the new album still isn't out five years after 'Time 1' and they're crowdfunding for it!! Amazing. It's the 'Chinese Democracy' of metal.

I tend to think that considering the standard of the first two (and only two!) Wintersun albums, they're a pretty overrated band. 'Time 1' in particular sounded so computerised and artificial. I own them both on CD, and they're good and all, but it's amazing anyone still cares.

I hate to be this guy, but I'm going to go ahead and say it. Jari should have stayed in Ensiferum. There, I said it.

It's the fog enshrouded island that one can visit but never leave. My uncle Hans Requiem has one of these in the Swiss Alps. Fresh foggy air, yodelling, the blood of mountaineers. Glorious!

How did you escape? :D

Everything about the Wintersun campaign strikes me as funny - how much they're asking, what they're going to use it for, what they're offering in return. "You have the UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY to give us €50 towards a new building filled with tons of sick gear so we can record the album of your dreams!!! and make self-produced videos for songs that don't yet exist!!!, and IN RETURN, you get a genuine real complete download of the proposed album!!! as well as some other downloads of stuff you probably already have!!! OR, you can wait until we finish the album and pay €10 like everybody else... So what are you waiting for!?!"

Pffft.

I'm all for crowdfunding in theory, but if I was gonna do it, I'd at least have a realistic album budget and offer some good merch as fair compensation.

I'm actually planning on making some really interesting posts here on the forum, but I need your help FA. Please send me $20, which will help me pay for my internet connection, and you'll be able to download some great Requiem moments. I'm sure I'll think of some quality posts. It's impossible for me to produce high quality posts at the moment due to the great expense of electricity and my macbook which does not allow me to realise my posting dreams. Send $20 now and show your support!

Ok I just went to their crowdfunding page and watched the youtube video. At first it was really strange and funny but by the end I was sort of on board hahaha. Amazing that they actually want to build a Wintersun Headquarters. They're currently at 237k Euros which is amazing considering they haven't had to send out a single physical copy of anything.

I just don't get the Wintersun love.

Edit: I just don't get the Wintersun hate. Reading some of the comments on various metal news sites that have covered this makes me feel sorry for all the losers out there posting angrily about why Wintersun shouldn't be doing this. Yes it's still funny, ambitious and weird, but there's a lot of hate out there.

I posted this as a youtube comment, therefore copy paste.

My real issue with the thing is that basically they are claiming that they are unable to make great albums without these extraordinary circumstances they are reaching for. Music production is more and more accessible to almost anyone these days, and at an extreme level of quality too. All it really takes is massive effort. Claiming that it´s impossible to get their vision realised any other way than with a Wintersun hq, is just bullshit. It´s actually a syndrome that many famous and highly skilled people in music production sometimes talk about. The feeling that "i need this and that to actually be able to go to next level". Most of the time it´s just untrue, and it´s just setting invisible barriers to yourself, that in reality aren´t even there. So people are basically funding an artists false approach on music production, and a mental barrier he has set to himself.

I recently got some genetic test results back as quite a few things (some cancers etc) run in the family but they all came back clear. Today I had to have a biopsy taken on a solid lump I found on my chest to see if it's cancerous. Should be getting results back within the week.....

I wanted to point out that Santaria might be the sexist religion in the world. If you have your doubts you might want to look into it. Also I'm wicked turned on by Esperanto at the moment. I might be getting ready to make some serious life changes.

Aren't you supposed to have a manager and a serious drug habit before you start with the weird religions and politically inspired language choices? Try easing in with some yoga and E-prime maybe?

I'M HOME!!!

So we picked the worst POSSIBLE time to stay in LA. The Oscars can fuck right off thank you. Turns out we actually stayed just off Hollywood Blvd. Great location every other day but we couldn't walk out of the hotel without being approached by security/police and asked what we thought we were doing that day. I had a blast and plan to go back next year. Didn't get even half what I wanted to done. Brother won Silver in the 4km pursuit and bronze in 1km time trial so that was good. I blew threw $1300 US which wasn't so good. Also gained five kilograms which is both good and bad.

Think I ticked 1 of the beers FA recommended (Stone IPA...wait was that one I don't remember anymore). Pretty good or maybe that's just compared to Aussie Beer. Sierra Nevada IPA was one I tried too exatly average.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
