Manic week which has managed to achieve big openings work/career wise.  Turned my smile on for 3 days straight and my jaw aches like fuck but worth it.  No more conferences this year hopefully.

Are you looking at changing jobs again, or just getting away from the shriveled, poxy halfwits?

No change of role, more an expansion of the whole department role coupled with some clever new definitions around contracts and licensing that cement our team's position nicely in the company.  Big pressure like (two people have been "let go" already for not making the grade) but big carrots on big sticks being waved in front of us donkeys. Dollar to match the pressure if we produce too.

How's the show?

To be honest it started very flat, just no energy. Picked up though for the final 30min which were great. A 'professional' performance from guys who should really have been in bed at that time. World Wide Live it was not!!

Mikkey Dee though was incredible - he just bulldozed them along.

I didn't know that he was playing with them now. I could definitely see him pushing their speed though.

I just got back from a two week garden tour in Kyoto. I went into a guitar shop to pick up some exotic guitar picks to hand out to friends, and while in there I asked about metal shows in Kyoto and dude laughed and said "no metal". I pointed to a band on a flyer on the counter, and Dude was like "Baby metal". So I learned once again that Kyoto, though it is the city for gardens, it is not the city for metal. Saw some free jazz fusions in a tiny bar though, so that made me feel cosmopolitan.

^What made it such good Deathstorm?

And on my mind, there is quite a lot. I have been under quite some stress lately due all the different things I am trying to manage at once. University and exams, table tennis related stuff three-four times a week, but also meeting up with friends and Skyping with this awesome Hungarian girl. It has some good sides though, but there is a very little free time left for me and it might be killing me soon. Not to mention I nearly passed out earlier today due a combination of factors.

But that is not even my biggest worry at this moment. I have this good friend, which is my ex as well, who I might want to get rid off. I still feel she is too much in my life at this point, and although she is a good person, she is affecting me in a bad way I think. I realized I do mention her quite often, always unintended. One might say that I still might have feelings for her, because she is my ex, but that is absolutely not the case, because I can only think of this new girl I met. But due the fact that I mention her sometimes unintended, she is affecting the relationship between this Hungarian girl and me. It's not smart of me of course to do such though. Also, her character and the things she writes sometimes to me, are quite irritating. It's like I cannot stand her behavior anymore.

However, I am still in doubt if I should remove her from my life. We have quite some mutual friends and we share the ownership of our webzine Murmure. Although Murmure is official registered under my account, I am quite afraid that when I fire her it's not a very appropriate thing to do. These are hard decisions to make in the end and I don't really know what the right choice will be. Struggles.

Just got started on my second tattoo, Over the next couple of years I'm going to try and get Tolkien's Wilderland map down my right side. I'm only doing it in small sections at a time, partly because of money, partly because I don't fancy an hours long session on my pelvis. Today I had the grey mountains from the top of the map done just to the side of my navel. The next section will probably be the misty mountains in a few months time

"Hey Charlotte, fancy a tour of Middle-Earth? Perhaps a trip through Mirkwood to the land where the shadows lie..." :D

Saw Gorguts last night. Got to talk to Luc beforehand, and he told me all about his time in the music conservatory in Montreal and his days of hitchhiking and photocopying music scores. What an interesting guy. I headbanged my ass off when they played and I'm really feeling it now. I'm having trouble just keeping my head up.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
