Had an odd virus/bug this week that hasn't really moved beyond mildly irritating my sinuses yet has made my tired very easily.  Starting to get frustrating now as have to finish boarding the roof on my Dad's shed on Saturday morning and would like to feel fresh and up for it to get it done.  Also it has made ears really irritated this week too.

Also, watched "Until The Light Takes Us" documentary earlier (all the way through for the first time as only caught snippets until now) and as well as confirming what an absolute penis Varg Vikernes is (with Frost a close second) I also found myself really irritated by the film maker/interviewer.  I suppose the raw editing job was meant to fit with the general aesthetic of the subject matter but still looked like something I put together in the edit suite at college as a teenager.

I hate the ear irritation, it must be a seasonal allergy with me as it always happens around this time of year. Makes mixing music a shittier experience than it might otherwise be. I think I'm acquainted with one of the guys who edited that doc, he plays with Mutilation Rites. Still have not watched it.

Short term it will be a guitar cover only. Down the road I aim to play it as a full band cover probably with harsh vox. I want to have a band up and going by this time next year so I'll be putting much more work into covers with my sound in mind. C# has proved very productive already (playing in that @ my guitar place).

C# FTW!

Okay, now I'm seriously pissed off. I've just come off the phone to the university and I'm not allowed to bring any of my archery, knife throwing or Iaido equipment, despite the fact I have years of experience and the qualifications and licenses to back it up for all of them. Not to mention that it is all kept under lock and key.

I'm tempted to stick a load of "we don't talk about band camp" stickers on my archery box and if anyone asks it's a trombone.

Priorities, dude. Do they offer any courses or opportunities for you to pursue those interests there? I can imagine you might get pegged as something of a weirdo for always walking deep into the woods for "trombone practice", and then someone follows you one week, out of innocent curiosity, and in a tragic turn of fate winds up with an arrow through the eye. You dump the body and cover it up, going on to a successful career in politics, though you're secretly eaten from the inside with guilt over the murder, and then after decades the body is discovered, a scrape on the bone is matched to your arrowhead, and you spend the rest of your life in prison, a broken man.

This is virtually guaranteed to happen if you bring your bow and arrows to school with you.

I sort of see their point though. Potential weapons and you underestimate how psychotic uni can make you...

Is there a particular reason you need that stuff on campus?

Well for one, I can't store it elsewhere and that is why everything is kept locked up. Basically what's happened now is in addition to leaving home, I now have to give up every sport I was ever good at. As for the whole psychotic thing, I actually have a statement from my GP and a local mental health practitioner to prove I am of sound mind (I needed it to do my knife throwing instructor's course, which I passed with flying colours by the way.).

Nope, none. They have a target archery club, but that is a very different sport to the field archery I do. As for Iaido and knife throwing, there simply wouldn't be enough people and it would be too much of an expense for the uni to run a club. I was looking at joining clubs outside the uni, but for that I need my own equipment, particularly for Iaido as my size means I need a shorter blade with less of a curve than usual, and all of the local archery groups don't lend out equipment.

If it's a blanket rule then unfortunate as this is I fully understand their position. Taking it that far means they can't make exceptions. It sucks for you and all the other students affected by the rigid nature of that rule though.

To be honest, I fully understand where they are coming from, letting any loon keep weapons in their room is just asking for trouble.. I just don't understand why they can't make exceptions for people like myself (and a few others going on what people are saying in the accommodation group chats) who actually have all of the paperwork and experience to prove they can be trusted to possess and store such equipment. To be honest, once I've gotten to know the people in my flat, I will probably bring it anyway a little later on.

Maybe because there's no way to absolutely guarantee someone else wouldn't get their hands on it? Aside from any potential for injury, it would really suck if you damaged your prospects by getting caught with your gear on campus.

FA is right mate. The rule exists to protect students. If one of your dorm buddies should happen to unlock those potential weapons, or there's a break-in where they are stolen, the potential for harm is extreme. It may seem a harsh rule but bear that in mind.

They'll have regular inspections (possibly even surprise inspections given it's a campus dorm) so you will almost surely be caught. Consequences for that could be significant.

Yeah, unfortunately I think you guys are right. However, I do have some good news. I moved in Yesterday and my room is directly above the disabled flats, so my room has the same floor plan (i.e. it is enormous).

I have had a few disabled rooms in hotels in my time when the places are full - the space is great.

Finished the roof off on my Dad's shed/workshop now so he has it all nice and watertight for the onset of Autumn.  My knees are killing me from being propped up on a ladder for hours but all worth it.  Despite an early start tomorrow (after a week off it is straight into the boardroom tomorrow) I have worked my way through several beers tonight as a reward for a hard weekend's work.

About thirty years ago there were guys in my boarding school with shot guns and rifles in their closets. That was life in rural Maine in the 80s. It was against the rules for sure, but not a big deal.

My rock band, The Angelic Slugs, played a wedding this weekend. We had a great time. It was out third gig this year.

Glad to hear you're playing, nice to see you around. How are things otherwise?

Sorry posting out of order guys dont delete my postings check out my new topic  your first metal cd under deep and meaningful  I like it here

We're mostly aware of and sympathetic to your issues, and I'm happy that you have a community here that you can feel comfortable with, and you're not in trouble. But if you can't follow the rules of the game threads, you shouldn't play. It's distracting and kind of ruins the fun of the threads for the rest of the forum. Try making a list or something, if it helps you to play along, OK?

Guys I'm in a really bad place right now. Honestly don't know what's brought on the sudden and dramatic change in mood. The smallest of things is enough to set me off and I'm lashing out at those close to me simply for being there. I need help but don't know how to go about getting it.

I might not post as frequently for a while because I don't want to hurt you guys too.

Sorry to hear it, dude, I hope you can at least find someone to talk some things through with you. Is there a hotline or something down there that you can call?

Last night saw my whole state lose power for over four hours due to the worst storm in fifty years. As I type this over forty thousand homes are still without power. Tonight we're expecting to be hit by the worst storm in our state's history. It's very frightening to think about.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
