Aaagh. I'm really sorry to hear it. Best luck to your family. Is this another instance of shit rolling downhill because the NHS is suffering due to ongoing lack of funding and political support?

Not really. I am the first to attack the Conservative government and their appalling policy of crippling austerity to fund the Establishment and all concerned, normally at the expense of public institutions like the NHS. However, I can't away from the fact that (having worked in it for 12 years and now in a job actually trying to help them maximise efficiency and savings) that the NHS is poorly run and has massive cultural shifts to make to become better. There's amazing people in their saving lives and improving patient life dramatically but the powers that be in most Trusts are clueless and have no idea of the millions of pounds that can be saved by just using resources more effectively.

In terms of my dad this is just another example of near sighted decision making.  Basically, you are alright (if that term is even applicable to him anymore) this week so on the one week out of 52 we made a monitor intervention into your life the "stats" showed no reason to have brain surgery to overall improve your quality of life long term.  That's the decision process that exists both clinically and culturally across the organisation.

Add on top the ludicrous decisions made by the Conservative government as it overtly looks to privatise the NHS (as you say FA defund something to make it look like it doesn't work then sell it on as not fit for purpose in it's current state) and we have quite a recipe for disaster.

My catalogue spreadsheet is complete barring a final run through my CDs to check nothing is missing.  I am surprisingly light on the Doom and Thrash front with album counts clocking in at 48 and 35 respectively.  Black and Death metal releases are where it is at for me which is surprising as I came to BM quite late in comparison to Thrash at least.

So, this weekend I'll travel with a couple of friends to France for Fall of Summer. With Oranssi Pazuzu, Skepticism, Satyricon, Shinging and a couple of more nice bands, there are some decent names on the line-up. It feels good to leave the country for a couple of days, as I haven't had the time and money to go away the past couple of months.

While not the same numbers, I would estimate that my collection has black and death metal disproportionally represented over doom and thrash as well. Thrash is a more narrow genre that doesn't have the same time span as the others due to all but dying off in the 90's, and doom metal took me longer to get into than the others.

Yeah that makes sense now I think about it. Whilst I recognise there are albums missing I would like to have in my collection I sense there aren't too many left to explore.

I disagree. We had some decent conversations going, even if they were off topic. I've been pretty busy over the last while since our move, and I haven't been able to do that much aside from organizational maintenance, but I'd like to get around to writing up some lists, reviews, more posts about new material, and possibly some equipment and recording-related stuff.

I'm with FA, the place was picking up nicely - not that I am criticising Tait for the data loss, I know it was beyond his control - and we had some neat new members posting in threads we hadn't used for a while.

EDIT - Plus I told a stranger on the internet to "grow the fuck up" and stop wasting their life in the comments section on YouTube, because I am teh awforitee figuur!  That moment is lost forever.

It is a shame, I was intrigued to see how far that guy would go. Hoping we would have seen some sincere dips into numerology or Atlantis, at least.

Hey, maybe we should go find him on Youtube!

...nah, bad idea.

Yeah don't take that remark too seriously fellas. Since those newbies were getting pretty involved I think they'll be back so we can rejuvenate their content. In the grand scheme of things it's not the biggest setback MetalForum has endured.

Now you know who I would have enjoyed seeing duke it out with that kid? NTNR.

The best thing about arguing with NTNR is that he chases his own and is proud when he has, in his own mind, vanquished the enemy that nobody else knew that he was battling.

Finally a day off after a busy week. Our trip to Fall of Summer (France) was really awesome. Oranssi Pazuzu and Dead Congregation delivered both an amazing show, as well as Shining and Satyricon. Skepticism was a bit disappointing due they had to perform during the day on an open air stage, plus the sound wasn't great either. Overall the atmosphere was great as well; I would almost say the best crowd you could wish for a festival.

Then on monday I had immediately go to university for 9 hours, so that was fun.

Also: I think I missed something here? :D

Glad you had a good time. We're all missing something, unfortunately, the last few days of posts disappeared.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
