As I said he's prone to this sort of thing, says he'll do this or that and then changes his mind just when you think he's fully committed. Because of that I can't really put any plans into motion until he's on the plane with his bags packed. We had a rather lengthy discussion when he got home today where I pretty much told him he's a dick. Also that if he does move out he will still be paying his share of our rent and utilities until we're able to sort out the mess he'll be leaving us with. He wasn't thrilled with the idea but with any luck it will force him to sort out a new housemate before he leaves (if he does).

It isn't just our housemate and myself this impacts either. Part of his moving plans involve quitting cycling and returning to swimming. That means the bike company custom building two tandems for him and massively cutting the asking price for them lose out (won't need them if he quits the sport after all). On top of that the funding he gets from a sporting scholarship is wasted (changing sports means he no longer qualifies). Capping it all off is the time his pilot and his coaches have invested getting him to ride under paralympic qualifying times for his event. That's all wasted too as he's not built for swimming but would rather fail at that then succeed as a cyclist.

Meanwhile my training has completely dropped off while I try to work out what direction I want to head with cycling. I find it extremely difficult motivating myself to train without a clear goal in mind.

I'm feeling philosophical right now. I'm very, very grateful that my mom is OK - she was just in a car crash. I don't know all of the details, but she's alright; her car, on the other hand, is completely wrecked. This is actually a lot less bad than it could be, because (as of yesterday) she took possession of my grandmother's car, which is comparatively newer, and only ever gets driven by my mom anyway, since my grandma doesn't drive. (It is kind of funny that she should own a vehicle, since she's never driven - for which we can thank my grandfather, who insisted that she have one.)

The unfortunate thing for me is that my mom had offered me her old car once we'd finished moving, and I'd been somewhat counting on it. I won't be able to afford a car for a while now, and I'm disappointed. But my wife and I have been a one-car family for years, and so what this whole episode actually amounts to is nothing. My situation won't change, my mom still has a car, and my grandma will still be able to get driven everywhere she needs to go. Another way to look at it is: due to my grandfather's hard work, and his urge to provide for his wife before he passed, we're all able to weather this accident with no monetary loss or interruption of our capabilities. And my mom is alright. So truly, I have a lot to be thankful for.

More storms rolling through. Local council still haven't finished cleaning up from last weeks and these ones are supposed to be worse. Think I'm right in saying it's the worst series of storms to hit the state in fifty years. Several fatalities, about a hundred homes damaged to the point they are unliveabl, at least two thousand homes damaged to some extent and many trees uprooted. Some houses are still without power due to extensive line damage as well. That's before this fresh wave of shitty weather hits.

Besides Adelaide is quiet 95% of the year and I kinda like that. In other news I've marked the date for a gig being promoted by the bloke who also runs the place I do my guitar lessons. Never heard any of the bands before but they're all home grown and everyone knows the quality of Aussie metal bands...

Fucking slackers, prodigal sons, and disloyal ne'er-do-wells are always welcome here. :D

Things have been a bit quiet around the forum. We're moving to Massachusetts in a week, lots of packing and work of various kinds to get done. I was up too late drinking with a friend last night, and will probably do the same this evening. Nice to see you back around.

:P I do feel a great sense of shame that it's taken me so long to return!

Glad to see the place is still running. Do most of the regular 'crew' still post in here? Best of luck with the move! Are you looking forward to it, or is it a bit of a mixed feeling? I moved out for the first time at the end of the last year, and it took a lot of getting used to!

Yes, I'm sure the shame is nearly overwhelming, good thing you're stronger than that.

There are a good few people I'd like to see come back around (looking at you, Iceni, Ghouly, and Mere), and we still have difficulty hanging on to newcomers. At least we're still operational.

I'm not really psyched to be leaving NYC, but I'm looking forward to it on behalf of my wife and kid. We've got a lot of work ahead of us. Glad to hear you're coping well, I imagine it must have been difficult.

Nice to have you back JBaker.

The good for nothing younger brother was around earlier borrowing cycling-related things. I made damn sure he understands we expect everything he took back within six weeks. Also made it clear I expect the money he still owes me paid in full by year's end. Yeah he's none too thrilled about that but not my problem. Not like he hasn't acknowledged the debt, taken steps to pay it off, etc. Frankly he would not be in this position had he not A) flat out stolen half the money owing and B) started dating a complete no hope third generation welfare cheat.

Ok since when did B + ) = smiley?

So done with this. I try to be nice. Try to make this friendship work for reasons I don't understand to be perfectly honest. The brief payoff of talking for a week and then...nothing. Nothing for almost a month. Then out of the blue...a message. A message asking if we can talk. So I bite (again why I don't know) and reply 'sure, what's up?' Two hours later before the reply 'don't want to talk right now'.

Last message I'm ever sending her simply reads 'ok goodbye'. There's no point being nasty to her. That's not really in my nature (perhaps that's the problem I'm too forgiving of people).

Sorry just had to vent a little bit

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
