What's on your mind?

Sorry to hear that JFK. We're all here if you need us.

Volume is closest to the bridge on both but it's still just out of reach keeping my hand in a position to actually play any notes whatsoever.

Meanwhile in the world of me...I'M MOVING OUT!!! Well at least I'm 90% sure I'm moving out. Gonna be closer to uni, closer to my friends, closer to the meeting point for the hit-outs on the road (or riding out from home). I can just barely afford it but there are more opportunities for work that side of town so maybe I can slip into a part time position to earn some extra coin.

Congratulations Relentless, should make things a bit easier for you. What is it you're studying at uni again? I have a terrible memory.

Oh shit. Well, I'm happy nobody died. Sorry to hear about your depression, that's a beast. Are you still going to Marrakesh?

I haven't actually been diagnosed with depression, but have been told by people who work in the field that I show pretty much every single symptom to some extent (apart from weight loss). As for Marrakesh, as long as I keep my Saturday job and nothing else gets in the way, I don't see any reason not to.

I hope you get to go. Sounds fun. Do you have any access to a counselor? I know a few people, including my wife, who say that counseling helped them. Getting enough sleep helps a lot too.

On my mind - I'm really stoked (and lucky) that I'm going to see Krallice again tonight. I'm still in awe of their last live set that I saw.

Studying Law JFK.

Yeah I'm excited by the change. Will be living with my brother (the one who, aside from his taste in movies and music, I get along well with). At least initially it will be super tight financially for me (as in actually having no money for such luxuries as beer, new music, new clothes, or chocolate).

In other news Psycroptic are pretty energetic if not playing the most original music ever. Really headbangable shit there.

I'm now seeing a counselor that comes into school on a weekly basis. I also spoke with my GP, who immediately started talking about a prescription for antidepressants *face-palm*. The last thing I want to do is end up on drugs for it.

As someone who has worked with people with all forms of mental illness in the past I would say good on you for recognising that the route of "pills fix everything" is a load of bollocks.  The NHS is supposed to promote a holistic approach to treatment and recovery and in the case of mental health it is more about helping the patient identify what makes them feel better as opposed to just throwing pills at them and assuming that is the be all and end all!  Pills are just a sticking plaster over wounds (not saying you have massive wounds JFK - I don't know you but just my experience of these matters).  Good luck with the counselling.

Looks like our plans to raise some cash for a deposit for a house have fallen through, which although disappointing wasn't that unexpected tbh.  We still have a couple of options but the timescale is anything between 3 and 5 years now with us in the rental market the whole time.  That's a few more years of hiding bodies in other people's houses.

Look on the bright side, at least you still have some options available.

As for the drugs thing. My Dad works in safeguarding, so I have heard more than my fair share of stories of how kids started out like me, and ended up fucking everything up when they started medication.

Sorry to hear that Macabre

JFK good call. Pills should be a last resort if nothing else works. Messing with the chemistry of the brain is nothing but bad news. As I said we're here for you mate. Having been there myself I know how tough things can get.

Another productive jam today. I've never been so inspired to pick up my guitar and just play before. 2 hours just flew by.

Ouch, feel better. What happened?

I somewhat abstractly wish that I could be in London this weekend - Enslaved is doing a bunch of stuff over the weekend, including a set of old material (fuck yeah) and a performance of the Skuggsjá stuff with Wardruna. I would be all over this.

The old band The Angelic Slugs that hasn't played in years has a gig in two weeks, about which I'm pretty excited. I play the tambourine, sing some and play a traffic cone as a ready made didgeridoo in this band. It's a garage band with a comedic aspect, we started playing out about 18 years ago, but the last 8 have been pretty thin. I don't care too much about the music, but I love the guys and wicked look forward to it. Wish us luck!

Dammit.  Just seen this and literally half an hour ago I chose not to travel to London on the weekend ready for my client on Monday and booked my travel and hotel for Monday instead.  Pissin eck!

Shit! Change your tickets? Or we can both get drunk over the weekend and post about how we wish we were there...

On my mind, my son's fourth birthday today! We're playing with some new extensions to the wooden train set. He got up extra early and almost (literally) pissed himself because he didn't want to leave the new train tracks alone even for a minute. Good times. :)

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
