What's on your mind?

Hmm think I might be on to something here. A very fruitful jam session on the guitar has given me some options with one riff and solved an issue I was having with another (for about 2 friggin' years). The two can be tied together with a nice transitional riff too. Come to think of it I have quite a few options here. I would like to see how it works in D standard though (playing in E standard right now) but it's much too time consuming with the floyd rose bridge.

One thing that I would caution is to make sure that and old riff truly fits before transitioning to it from a fresh one. I know the temptation to finally use a riff from ages ago is huge, but it can be a mistake if you let that emotional attachment to it cloud your ears telling you that this isn't the right place to use it. Don't force it, you'll be surprised how many old riffs Mike has hung on to that I've had to tell him the same thing with. The bigger surprise happens when you get to a point in a song and recall that riff from years ago, and then you play it and it fits.

Quite annoyed with myself this week. I've allowed my training standards to slip. An ordinary week would see me log about 8 hours on the bike (between trainer and road). This week I will manage just 5 1/2 (at best). That kind of drop so close to nationals simply is not good enough. It's done and there's nothing I can do about it now but that time can't be made up.

Today I learned that for the last few months someone else has been receiving my emails. They have a very similar address to mine and it is very annoying that this took so long. The matter is more or less resolved however it has cost me a potential job interview.

Sorry to hear that, are you out of work at the moment or just looking for a change (sorry, I've been out of the loop for a while)?

I'm certain that Lucifer himself would officiate the ceremony.

I'm a little late to the party here, but I could officiate if needs be. I am a fully ordained priest of the Church of the latter day dude, and I have all of the correct legal documents and paperwork to officiate marriages in both the UK and most US states.

Had this virus for about 3 weeks now and it is starting to take a stronger hold again today as I can feel my glands rising in my throat again.  Should be at home all week but been called into a training session in London tomorrow so that will leave plenty of opportunity for me to spread my germs on trains whilst picking up numerous others from my fellow passengers of course.

Shit dude, I hope you feel better soon. I hate being run down like that. I had my own special hell earlier in the week, I have a herniated disc in my back and I tweaked it in the shower of all places. I've been limping around like an aging gnome. Last night was the first time in a few days that I could stand up straight.

Went out last night and had beers with a couple of really great musicians. We wound up at a metal bar, singing "Dead Embryonic Cells" at the top of our lungs around 3AM.

Step-dad lost his job, mom's hours at work have been dramatically cut back as well, for the immediate future we're ok but things like holidays are well and truly on the backburner.

Damn, lots of career changes and uncertainty for members of both of my forums, it's like there's something in the air.

Yeah, none of us saw that coming, going from their combined income being around 215k to less then 50k will be a huge adjustment. I know I don't get on with him but still kind of feel bad for the guy. Hopefully he doesn't take too long finding another job.

I can work on a bit of a backup plan having saved an ok amount of money over the last seven years or so.

Funny you should say that actually. 50-50 chance of that happening by year's end. The situation might not be much better though as it means moving in with the younger brother, his girlfriend (who I don't exactly like...at all), her baby, and the other brother. At any rate 2016 has thrown up some early challenges.

On my mind? The magnificent taste of my new protein powder. Just like a chocolate cake but without the mess or that annoying waiting time. Oh yeah and the huge jump in power I can produce during a sprint - 638 watts at the end of a savage training session is complete madness. Probably means I would produce 800+ on fresher legs.

What brand is it? My wife is on a high protein diet and she might enjoy that.

Regarding your living situation, it seems like getting into a different environment would be beneficial no matter what. Although I guess you would have to make a lot of adjustments. Anyway, good luck.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
