What's on your mind?

You guys are crazy, I thought Rotting Christ was great live. The crowd interaction is cheesy, but it's hardly foreign to bigger name metal acts. The music was tight and energetic, and I thought the new material sounded almost as good as the old stuff. Watain's stage presence was a way bigger turn off for me. They're the epitome of try hard black metal that has become more about image than substance, which is clear with how their last couple of albums have suffered from a decline in quality. When I saw them early on, it seemed like they were hungry and into what they were doing, now it just looks like they're putting on a show.

Iceni, good luck with your thesis!

Thanks! Technically just finished and I'm pretty tired. Presentation could have been a lot better but my friend said it went well and my professors seemed happy enough. Only 5 people showed up, though - the two professors, the coordinator of the African Studies Program, my best friend, and my dad over Skype. A little unnerving, I think it threw me off.

In a first for me today I nearly had someone walk out of a training session as the change required in their working life was too much to contemplate. Pathetic really.

Really you should have some more sympathy.

Hope you did something nice with his remains after the session, anyway. :D

I haven't liked anything since Triarchy, so I wasn't really expecting to be blown away. The oldest thing they played was "Archon", and it was a bit of a letdown. This was years ago, anyway, Immolation was the star of that show hands down.

I'm confident that Immolation would steal any show that they're a part of. They are, without question, one of the most intense live bands on the planet. Just watching the crazy way that Bob Vigna plays his guitar is mind blowing.

I like painting, but there's no way we would even be able to paint our apartment if we wanted to. The wife and kid and I are crammed into a two-bedroom that she rented for herself when she moved to the city. Home improvement will have to wait.

This is my house. I will be given the option to buy this house in a few years and I will take that option. I painted my living room blood red which looks epic with my black furniture and couches, one more coat to do and I'm done in the living room and I'll be heading upstairs with the black paint, my bed room will be black and dark purple :)

I'll post a picture when I'm done because I'm almost on my post limit (not sure how long that limit is for so I'm being careful)

What does popular contributors mean? Is that to do with activity?

Cool. Good luck with purchasing your house. That's definitely a ways off for my family. I had a red room in an old apartment, and the landlord kept our deposit over it, the bastard...

I think the "popular contributors" thing has to do with how many "horns up" people get. I don't see that field on my phone, but I noticed it on the desktop version. New bells and whistles with the new look, you see.

I'm in a council house so the small deposit I paid is non refundable anyway. And having a council house means you are pretty much stuck where you are because you only get a house like this once and no rent allowance if you go back to private renting. It so happens that I got the dogs bollocks of council houses and I love where I am so I'm an extremely lucky girl. When I'm here 3 years with no hassle I'll be given the option to buy. I have moved around all my life and never been in the same house for more than 4 years, so I'm happy to finally root. My neighbors are brilliant, they never complain about dogs barking, kids making noise or how loud I play my music (and that is really loud most days). I'm sure having a single mom with 4 dogs and 3 kids and a passion for metal moving in next to them wasn't on their wish list but they are really cool about it.

And I still can't get on the forum on my phone so it's laptop only for me.

Whenever I hear about these things I always think of the victims and their families. Then hope the person or people responsible survived so they can rot in prison. Anyway on a happier note my dog decided he wanted to use his water dish as a hat so I just spent 20 minutes cleaning up the mess.

What goes through my mind?

"Please not a Muslim. Please don't be Muslim!"

Because you don't want to see millions of decent people here, and billions worldwide, unfairly demonized for the actions of some fucking psychos who claim to be acting in accordance with a belief system that "mainstream America" is misinformed enough to think they all share? Yeah, I'm with that.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
