What's on your mind?

I wasn't trying to be mean.

Besides, everybody knows yak skin is only good for yurts and paleo-black metal demo recordings.

Given what paleo diet means the term paleo black metal just sounds like blackgaze to me...speaking of which, I insulted shoegaze the other day in class and one guy asked me about it, so I'm now actually recommending Amsoeurs, In Mourning and Alcest to help get the guy into metal, something I never thought I'd be caught dead doing.

I know that Mongolian secret agents are given one that can be suited to a variety of purposes: sarong, parachute, beach towel...

So I haven't been on much this week because my very good friend that I have known since I was 14 attempted suicide on Friday. Went to see him yesterday and he was hallucinating, nurse said he was having alcohol withdrawals. I feel as though it is my fault, I told him I would go to a concert with him on Thursday and I said I was too busy.  Then he did this on Friday....

I am so sorry to hear that Mindy. It's absolutely not your fault. Don't let yourself start thinking that way. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets the help he needs.

I love kilos...said no one...ever. No pacing yourself just flat chat for four laps of the track. By the end of the night I could hardly walk. Things don't get much easier either tonight's interval set is pure torture.

So pretty much NOTHING is going right for me this week. The break-up, a pretty inconsistent training sesh last night, the rear derailyer on my trainer bike is bent up and twisted somehow so that needs replacing AGAIN. Plus I can't replace my ID for another week because my passport and bank card don't equal one hundred points of ID. Need to add my birth certificate which means finding that in amongst the literally hundreds of documents I've accumulated over the years.

Now for the ONLY positive to come out of this week: moving from Nile's Cast Down The Heretic (which I can play flawlessly at about 3/4 speed) to Candlemass' Solitude (which does require me tuning to D Standard. Fortunately the Les Paul is already in drop D so I know exactly how to go about the task.

sorry to hear that mindy, it's not your fault at all. The best thing you can do is not blame yourself and stick by him when he needs you :)

My girlfriend had some minor surgery today on her knee after injuring in a netball game in May, finally after months of waiting she is able to get her meniscus stitched up. She'll have the stitches out in a couple of weeks and will be able to play netball again next season. :)

Had a long chat with the ex earlier today, probably the chat we should have had Monday if I'm honest, got some stuff off my chest, she explained some stuff, now I'm actually feeling pretty good about everything...and realising that when things end on a positive note well actually that's all I'm saying.

A rain day for me today, and I'm happy about it. I think I will devote this day to heavy metal. I will do what I can for metal, since it has done so much for me. What do I plan to do for metal today you ask. Well, I shall compose a crushing heavy riff, or at least tweak an existing riff to make it heaver. I shall work on my costume even thought I don't have a gig, because one day my Halloween costume will serve the betterment of metal, so that totally counts. I shall network with band members and inspire them to believe in them selves, because they can do it! I shall get started writing lyrics for a certain song I'm trying to compose, and get somewhere with it. This is my vow to metal... for today.

I just found out someone in the same year as me in 6th form passed away over the weekend. She left us late Saturday night in hospital, with her family around her... small mercies I guess.

That's awful news. Earlier this year I was working in Ireland and a girl of a similar age walked into A&E with a fever and died within a matter of hours (suspected spiking of her drink with something that caused heart failure). It was so saddening to see such a young life taken away so needlessly. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

I'm hoping I can make the Opeth show, my tonsils swelled up like golf balls overnight and I feel pretty light-headed and weak. So many shows I'd like to see... Cult Leader is coming tomorrow, and Necrophobic will be here the day after my birthday.

Have your tonsils taken out live on stage by the band members. Would make a great show!

Åkerfeldt's growl definitely isn't all there. His singing voice sounds better than ever, though. Interesting to see Ghost Reveries all the way through, and I really wish the crowd could have kept their mouths shut during the quiet parts. Opeth certainly delivers their newer material with more conviction than they do the growly stuff, at this point. Per "Sodomizer" was one of their roadies; funny, last time I saw him he was playing guitar for Katatonia.

Had two guys in front of me with matching Acacia Strain vests. These adorable young men were basically talking or on their phones until the band played a song from Watershed, and the guy directly in front of me was obsessively checking facebook. People down a little farther were filming entire songs on their iPads. I was filled with scorn. Maybe that's misplaced.

I don't think so, but I do understand your misgivings. I don't have a smartphone but I think I'm gunna get one for Christmas just because I know I'll need one eventually and my old phone is falling apart. Either way I don't plan on getting absorbed in it - I don't like texting and for other Internet stuff I'd rather use my computer.

The filming thing I do not understand. Sure the DVD might be edited, but is your bootleg cut really gunna be all that good?

The worst example I saw was one that made a pair of commentators just lose it, when there were a bunch of girls just texting/snapchatting/updating statuses/taking selfies at a baseball game and were almost completely ignoring what was going on.

I think ingratitude would be the word to describe what's unpleasant about that kind of behavior. I really hate seeing people do that because it gives the impression that they don't want to be anywhere and they're never really satisfied with what's going on at a given moment. There's a lot of literature around about living in the moment and I think for the most part it's empty-headed myopic hogwash, but there's a point at which basic gratitude (or perspective, if you prefer) requires that you show your appreciation for the present by enjoying it.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
