What's on your mind?

How does it feel living in a state where a minority of the population has complete political control over the governmental apparatus?
They're barely the minority, but over the last number of years that is what they have become, especially in Salt Lake. But, the church is worth billions and has a ton of pull despite declining numbers. It gets old, they impose their beliefs as law, as though there is no differing opinion, but I'm used to it. Went out to lunch with my girlfriend. It's rare that we catch up twice in a week so I'm pretty happy. We've also decided a place south of the city is probably the best fit for us given close proximity to our friends and to the most efficient public transport in Australia: Adelaide's train network.

Ha! My day just gets better. All set to resume taking guitar lessons at a place called the Australian Rock & Metal Institute. They actually teach all forms of music but special attention is given to all things loud. A little excited to redevelop and improve on the skills which were progressing nicely pre-accident.

Seems like I can log on here. I assume it's still under construction. I really value the community here, but I'd appreciate some more involvement from the admin or at least a heads up before the next time the plug gets pulled. I realize that there are only something like fifteen or twenty active regulars here, so it's kind of small potatoes, but we do our best to make it an open and engaging place to hang out. We've gotten into some fairly personal conversations, and I know I'm not alone in thinking this place is special. A few of us have formed a group on FB so we can stay in touch in case the place goes down again. Any of the other regulars who would like to stay in touch, PM me your info and I can add you.

Attention: this new layout has rendered MetalForum all but unusable to me. As such this will be my last post here until such time as things change. For those of you in the MF Denizens facebook group I'll be in touch through that or if you'd prefer to correspond via email contact me at [email protected]

It seems that a lot of posts leading up to the distruption were deleted whenever the admin was screwing with things. This new layout is awful by the way.
I think it was just down for a couple days, no posting possible. I'll be checking in to see if there's any activity, but the new nav and notification systems make things seem pretty unfamiliar, and I agree with everyone that the new look sucks. I suppose that's the price to be paid for upgrading to the latest version of vBulletin. PM me if you'd like to be added to our FB group, in case the board goes down again or we find a new home somewhere.

Hi all! We're back and i'm working hard to improve things still. Having a kid takes up a lot of my time but when I were shut down I got us back up and running. We're more secure now and i'm going to be investing in making this place much bigger. New design, marketing etc. Most of the layout issue you were seeing were just default imposed by the upgrade. If you need anything, have feedback just let me know. I'll keep you all posted.

Were there security issues before? Under hack attacks or something?

Yep someone hacked in and started sending phishing emails from the server. It's because we were on vb4. vb5 should be better now. :-)
Oh. Well then I fully understand your need to upgrade the site's software. I hope you did a full disk overwrite on the server before installing the updated software as some phishing programs can create its own little partition to survive a reinstalled OS!

Thankyou for the time and effort fixing the forum, I enjoy the time I spend here and it would be a shame to lose it.

How strange to open up the forum and fine that I'm the only member online. Hopefully things will pick up at some point. Heavy Metal has been on my mind all the time recently. I would like to, well have started recording in my way. Not in a making a recording sort of way, but in a sketching out musical ideas sort of a way. I've got an analog 4-track I'm using for that, It has pretty poor fidelity I'd say. They guys I've been playing with are fun but they are not up for a very regular schedule. I don't feel like I'm in a band if I'm not practicing with someone every Tuesday night, but whatever, I've got a lot of distance to cover before I really warrant being in a band, but I'm gaining speed.

Is it me or is the auto-logout bug from the last upgrade back? Also jeepers this new colour scheme is doing a number on my eyes. It's actually physically painful for me to look at.
I haven't had that problem. I'm finding the mobile layout hard to work with, though. Gorbo, it's cool that you're recording stuff. Have you cleaned the tape heads? You probably know about all this, but recording at high speed and using a new tape and dbx noise reduction (if you have it) will help with clarity. If you're comfortable with those cassette four-tracks, you'd probably do fine with a newer standalone digital recorder.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
