What's on your mind?

Of all the days to be struck with a migraine why did it have to be today? You know those headaches that come on so strong they actually make you sick? It's one of those. Nothing I do seems to make it any better either so I might have to miss the girlfriend's 21st :(
My son James felt the same way yesterday. He asked why he felt so bad on the first day of Spring. I told him that the two had nothing to do with each other. But then I said that life just isn't fair and that you can't have nice weather and feel good @ the same time. He said that made no sense. I said I know. Then he told me that I'm weird and I said...I know

Good news. The aforementioned headache has eased slightly so I longer feel like I could vomit at any second. Bad news is that it's only eased slightly after taking high strength headache tablets so this one's a real beast of a migraine. Will certainly not be attending my girlfriend's 21st so I'll have to wait until I see her next to give her that awesome present. In other bad news my brother has been involved in a car accident. He's fine but his car is wrecked and he's now stranded interstate.

Hey Relentless, I have a few cultural questions about Australia. Firstly, I'm guessing that 21 is not the age at which it becomes legal to drink alcohol in public as it is here in the U. S. of A., but that that privilege comes at an earlier age in your esteemed country. Is that so? Secondly, do you get a cake with candles on your birthday typically, and if a song is sung to you how do the words go? (is "Happy birthday to you" X2 "Happy birthday dear _______, Happy Birthday to you" ubiquitous in the English speaking world? Lastly, back to the subject of booze, here in the states we often hear about Australian beer and of course we drink a fair amount of your wine, but what about whiskey, do you folks make whiskey in Australia? And if not then why the fuck not? I thank you in advance for you consideration.

You're right the drinking age here is 18, it's also the age at which one may join the military, cake is optional (personally I don't much care for it) and yes the 'birthday song' is universal. I believe we do brew whiskey here though I've not yet had the fortune to try any. Most of the beer we export isn't something you want to be drinking if I'm being completely honest. Aussie wine is certainly the way to go, in fact most of the major Australian wineries are within a 2 hour drive of me (4 hours ish by bike at a decent clip) so one of these days I may start drinking wine. I have more info on my brother's car accident. He was rear ended and run off the road by some jackass (a hit and run apparently) his car is a complete write-off as I said and he's pretty shook up but somehow managed to escape without serious injuries. I swear the kid is bad luck incarnate.

This is the brother that used to be your pilot? Well, I'm glad he's unhurt, in any case.

I see a black guy with a black shirt. But not your typical black guy shirt. The back reads "Norsk Arisk Black Metal" in black metal print. Does he know what that translates to? Should I tell him? Or just keep walking with this smirk about my face?
I saw a Native American guy wearing a Burzum shirt at UNM...

What's a typical black guy shirt?

Maybe he knows what it means and still really likes "Transilvanian Hunger"? I listen to Immortal Technique sometimes...

Yeah he probably does like Transylvanian Hunger. I just find it ironic that his shirt says "Norwegian Aryan Black Metal" ... But I've also seen black guys around here flying Confederate States of America flags..

The whole premise of white people being Aryan in the first place is ludicrous, so he may have been closer to being Aryan in the first place.

You hate that you're sober :?: It's people isn't it. They ruin everything ;) Cheer up!
They sure do, my employees keep fucking up and it's pissing me off. I take my baby to the zoo and have to deal with customer complaints while I'm trying to spend time with my family. It should never have happened, I told both people in question multiple times what to do and they still fucked it up, I feel like I'm babysitting a bunch of fucking morons.

It is quite frustrating when dealing with incompetence. The last thing you should be worried about when spending time with your family is if your business/employees are going to run amok without you. It is hard to find good help.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
