What's on your mind?

That's where audiobooks come into the equation. I get really severe headaches if I have to read too much due to the added strain on my eyes so being able to just listen to the book being narrated is preferable. Mind you I prefer Gollum's voice in the movies to his voice on audiobook which is much less creepy. In other news I've finally been able to rotate new material through my iPod.

How is it that, as adults, we forget how to take a shit while we're walking around and just keep going about our business? My son has this amazing gift, and it seems like this sort of talent would make many people's lives both more manageable and more enjoyable. In other news, we're running out of diapers. Hey BAN, when is your kid due?

I used to listen to the LotR audiobooks in my work van. The van I drove didn't have a cd player, and the tape deck was messed up and only played out of one speaker. So books on tape was the way to go, and I had a blast listening to the narrator do all the different voices!

Sometimes, when I think too much about american politics I get an overwhelming sense of despair and frustration. Of course, good music helps me cope with that. I was listening to Forum with Michael Krasny this morning on NPR. It's public funded radio. Anyway, today's piece has been sitting in my gut like a kebab plate after a night of drinking. I can't digest it and I can't get over it. Basically the whole discussion had to do with the economy, where the wealth has disappeared to in the last 30 years, what's happening to the middle class, and how 95% of the ENTIRE US GDP has ended up in the pockets of the 1%. I know it's an old story, we've known about this problem since before the "occupy" movement, but these things quickly slip out of sight and out of mind. And I'm not at all trying to bring up a debate on politics. That's the last thing I want. But those facts I presented -- which you can look up yourself -- are just that. Numbers. And it terrifies me, and sickens me. That's what's been on my mind.

I made a conscious decision to stop reading about it a few months ago, because I'm home with my son most of the time and I need to be there for him, and there's hardly anything about the political or economic situation in this country that doesn't make me want to burn my eyes out. He doesn't need to grow up with a dad who's angry all the time because of some words on a screen; he needs me to be there for him and be happy about it. So I try to stay out of political news and discussions completely. I used to be a lot more active, but it ate me up. So, yes, you're right. It is a hard fucking pill to swallow.

I'm reading the news daily and yes it fills me with an unquenchable despair, but I need to know what's happening. We all do. That's the ONLY thing positive to come from the internet. The news isn't restricted to the same old outlets. More truth is available and more people seem to be waking up. Or so I hope.

Turning to local news, it's been confirmed by officials that the Last Unicorn killed the Tooth Fairy before jumping to its death from the 36th floor of Trump Towers, George W Bush really was chosen by God, and Santa Claus is real but we've been naughty for too long and he hates us all. From all of us here at Channel Five, have an awful fucking day. :D

The internet is definitely a better news source for those who have unplugged from the bullshit mainstream media. There's a lot of crazy stories floating around, but the astute observer can find the golden info. I think it's good to at least be informed of the current issues, even if you don't vote (like me). I can't claim to stay up-to-date on all the political happenings (mostly old white people arguing about sensational topics anyway), but I try to be informed enough to carry a conversation about current issues. As for what's on my mind currently, I love the feeling of deleting a bunch of old emails. It's just one step in my current life-cleaning process. I'm trying to rid my life of useless things, it's something I think everyone should do frequently.

Re: What's on your mind? Most media is sensationalist garbage. 90% of media coverage in this country via print, TV, radio, internet, etc... are owned by 5 companies. Then you have wacko "truthers" out there like Alex Jones spreading inane psychobabble about how John Kerry has orgies with men in massive vats filled with feces as part of satanic rituals. The astute observer could find some news of use, but I don't see what difference it makes in the long run. When the majority is enslaved by choice and cares not about shaking off the fetters, we are bound in a similar fashion. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
