Re: Up Coming DOOM Releases

You might like the new Evoken album...I think it gets too monotonous and light in places, that is to say, too much ambient/acoustic/un-heavy stuff. I thought 'The Unechoing Dread', 'An Extrinsic Divide' and 'Grim Eloquence' were the better tracks. They may not need to expand their sound but I do think they should just change riffs more often. There are songs where they show that they are capable of doing so and these tracks are typically standouts even on what seem to me good albums.
I was talking with John (their founder) a month or so ago on fb and I pissed him off by stating tube amps and prs guitars suck. lol.

I like Conan' date=' better than Leno even, but I have yet to laugh at even one of Letterman's jokes. That guy is a hack, which is made all the more sad by his being Johnny Carson's protege.[/quote'] The most annoying bit is that half the show is the band playing random stuff to congratulate Letterman on his half-baked humor. Not that it's really warranted.

Re: Up Coming DOOM Releases

rare and B-sides? wonder if it'll be worth checking out. Not expecting much from this given it's not a legitimate album.
You should at least get their Drown In Darkness comp. It features pretty much all of their demo material, so it's Paradise Lost at their most raw. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Now that does sound cool. So far I only have two Paradise Lost albums (Lost Paradise and Tragic Idol) and whilst I like both the contrast between them is staggering. I can't fathom how they could be the same band though perhaps that will become more apparent once I delve into the band a little further.

You don't have "Gothic"? Dude.

100%. I know you dig some of their later stuff' date=' too. I just couldn't get behind his clean vocals. But Gothic fuckin rules.[/quote'] One Second sucks. Host is pretty good. Believe in Nothing has grown significantly on me but still sucks. Symbol of Life is good. Paradise Lost is excellent, but Requiem is where they got their balls back. Nick's studio work is much better than his live stuff with clean vocals especially. I've seen some of their pro shot live work from the last couple of years and he's kind of a joke behind the mic. How his voice managed to get higher is beyond me because every other person on the planet, especially men, tend to get deeper voices as they age. Not sure what Voodoo he does. Thankfully MDB has always delivered solid albums. They've yet to piss me off.

I feel like MDB's high point was Turn Loose The Swans/Angel And The Dark River. Gods Of The Sun sounded like recycled AATDR to me, and then they kinda lost me. There are good tracks on Light At The End Of The World and Dreadful Hours, although I don't think they're as strong all the way through as their earlier material. The last one I heard was Line Of Deathless Kings, and I couldn't take his "whisper growl" on that, it sounded like he got tired of working on his death metal voice. I still love their old stuff and listen to it pretty regularly.

It takes the better melodic elements of The Dreadful Hours and turns the bleakness up to 11. It's a really downtrodden album, my soul just sinks into its mire of melancholy every time I hear it. They just got better with age. Their early stuff was good but after Light at the End of World they really upped the intensity. Dreadful Hours and Songs of Darkness blew my mind. Their latest is a seamless hybrid of their earlier sound with their new sound. It's incredible. I'm not sure what you mean by "whisper growl". His voice hasn't gotten better with age but it fits the music. It has a wretched quality akin to Tardy's with Obituary or Van Drunen with Asphyx.

On Line Of Deathless Kings, his harsh vocals just sounded like they had no intensity. They sounded like he was doing them very quietly and relying on effects and production. I was disappointed, because Aaron had always had one of my favorite death metal voices. I'll give Songs Of Darkness a spin. I'd rather like MDB than be disappointed by them, they were one of my favorite bands in high school and I still consider them an influence.

Ok, after listening to Songs Of Darkness and seeing the cover art, I remembered that I had this album at one point. Not sure what happened to the CD... I still don't really care for it, it sounds weak to me compared to their earlier stuff. However... I'm listening to A Map Of All Our Failures right now and I'm really impressed. I like this quite a bit. Though I could wish for some more of the nasty trem-picked blast stuff that they tease you with in the first track, overall it's really good. I like the melodies and the vocal harmonies, and his spoken stuff isn't quite as annoying as I used to find it. So I'm glad I gave this one a spin.

If you like AMOAOF then you'd like the following EP 'The Manuscript'. To me they really became a tighter unit after they got Hammish. Not that he's an outstanding guitarist or anything but meshes with the brides very well. Their guitar tone improved 10 fold as did their production. The only album I've ever really had a problem with was 'Like Gods of the Sun' and it's because Aaron didn't growl or sing he just spoke, that was annoying. His proper singing vocal approach is very good however.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
