Metal Forum Mascot

It seems that a few of us think an official mascot would be a great idea, the name is one thing but we need a symbol :) Anyway i shall start with an idea i have for it, i think we should go for a mechanized demon or humanoid, however Megadeth's symbol is like that so maybe a mechanized animal of some sort? Representing the power and impact of the Metal music. So maybe something unique like a wolf or bear? Maybe even a Cobra. What do you think? Also if a few ideas are popular we can have a vote on them.

Re: Metal Forum Mascot Ignii2-2.png Harhar. This is not a serious design by the way. Anywho, as for a real mascot design, I think it would be best to have some type of original character or creature. But first, we need to decide what that character will be based off of. We need to make sure it will symbolize metal in general, and not just one genre. Any ideas on this?

Re: Metal Forum Mascot I agree. I'm leery of the idea of something totally animal, as I think that could be difficult to work with. Something humanoid would, in my opinion, be best. Preferably it should be something we can alter for the variant of metal, because I do think we need to represent all genres. For power metal we can definitely take Shadow's suggestion and put a helmet on it. If we wish to advertise folk, we can have it with a flowing beard and some knotwork bracelet or something. I think it might be a bit difficult finding with something for prog, but maybe I can cook something up. :D I really don't know what on earth we'll do for stoner metal... :|

Re: Metal Forum Mascot Sorry to double-post, but here's my Metal Forum Mascot idea. I drew it in black and white but it should have tan skin, I think. That way we can clearly delineate it from an Orc. http://i52.tinypic.com/208cwfk.jpg It's called the Bread Beast for the time being, but if anyone has a better name they can suggest it.

Re: Metal Forum Mascot Well, I hesitated from making that assumption since I thought I would be accused (rightly) of not knowing anything about the genre. But our mascot will probably look quite watered down if he's sitting in front of a TV in nothing but his underpants puffing on a sizable doobie. :|

Re: Metal Forum Mascot

/me mumbles about wanting a Viking..
Once we decide on a design that everyone likes, we could have a viking form of it, since that could symbolize viking metal. (or even certain aspects of folk.) Anyways, that's a good drawing, Iceni. I don't really like orc-ish beasts, but if others like it, then I suppose it would work. o:

Thanks to thee. Thou shalt get thy Viking, heathen. Forsooth, ye beast can grow a beard and wear a helmet. 'Tis yet a template and shalt change appearance, contingent upon ye genre 'tis indented to represent. To MetalMaiden, I say ye simian nature ov ye Bread Beast alloweth myriad alterations. Ye humanoid head is paramount for fitting ye helmet. Ye beast can also carry weapons and other items, and ye task is made easier if ye creature be formed in that fashion. Shadow, I refer ye to mine past comments. We may mechanize ye beast for ye industrial metal fans such as thyself. Also, I put it to thee: how shalt we represent ye folk metal fans with a mechanized mascot?

I am no heathen, Heathen. Thee shalt not call a Viking Heathen. It is a good idea ye have there. And i think it would work.

That's not bad, but you'd say 'thou' instead of 'thee'. Anyhow, I'm glad you like my idea. I'll wait for more feedback. In the meantime, if there's anyone talented with Photoshop who can color this picture that'd be great. :P

Re: Metal Forum Mascot

Fair enough. What do you think of the design? :)
Apologies for the late response. I've been busy lately. I assume you mean for stoner metal, so I think the dude smoking a joint would be fine. It would be neat if he was gathered around a turntable with mascots from other metal bands (for example: Eddie from Maiden or Chaly from Overkill). It would be like the old days when people met up to shoot the breeze and put their favorite records on. Of course, we might run into copyright issues from bands if we did that, but I don't see why fan art of other mascots couldn't work. Just a thought.

Tan is too normal, and it's not really metal... even though it is breadly. xD But we don't need to base him off of bread.

As far as I know, assuming that we aren't using an official image of it (ie if one of our members draws his/her own interpretation of 'em) and if it's used in a not-for-profit manner, there shouldn't be a problem. Not 100% sure on this though so dun quote me on it.

Re: Metal Forum Mascot Well, assuming we're not shelling out these shirts for free, it would be for-profit, I think. Then again, you're part of the BPA so you've likely got more acumen when it comes to corporate issues.

Actually, I referred to my general design, which I posted earlier. What do you think of that design as a general template for modification?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
