How was your day?

Found out I have an inflamed Bursa like I had in my knee, but this time in my hip, which is causing a lot of pain in my butt.  Gluteus Medius, Minimus, and Pirformis especially.

Probably going to get a shot this week, if that doesn't work doc will have to cut it out, and release the tendon that sits on top of it.

That will mean I have two more surgeries on my legs to look forward to this year.

Fan-fucking tastic.

How's the eyesight situation coming?

Dude that sucks, going under the knife is no fun at all, I speak from experience here. In my case it was two surgeries in the space of a week to insert a metal plate in my face.

The vision is more or less the same as it has been for the last couple of years - so bad it's no longer possible to tell if it is deteriorating or not. Fortunately I'm used to it by now so there's little impact on my daily life aside from occassionally walking into shit that I don't see. I keep tabs on advances in medical science which has me pretty optimistic there will be a way to restore my sight in the near future.

Gorbo I assume "weeding the garden" is a trendy euphimism for something else...

  • 3 weeks later...

Fixed the dishwasher this morning purely by taking bits out and putting them back in again.  Out shopping for new suits for work and got sorted pretty quickly for a 6 foot plus guy with a waist size that fluctuates wildly between "retired physical education teacher" and "twelve year old gymnast"!

Got to do some gardening today also and even gave the cat her flea treatment without losing any flesh!

Sounds pretty cool mate. Keep us posted.

My usual guitar teacher wasn't there today so instead I had a lesson with the owner of the place. He asked what I'd been doing, and then if there was any one song right now I really wanted to learn. I may have confused talent with ambition 'cause the song I chose was 'Cast Down The Heretic' by Nile...yeah not my best idea ever.

I've been pruning trees from a lift this week that goes up 35 feet, which maybe does not sound high, but feels it. It is fun. The drummer and I have gotten together twice this week, yesterday and today. I'm very tired and will hopefully sleep great tonight, been staying up late a bunch. My day was good, but is over so goodnight.

Participating in the Acephalous Poultry Sprint this week as I try to sort out my African Studies Certificate and thesis. Gunna be doing something on DRC, which is good. I've also got Wednesdays and Fridays off so should have plenty of time for work and fun.

Careful you don't splatter blood all over the walls at your new job. Those stains are hard to get off.

You know what I retract my whinging statement about the car earlier as two things occurred today that had far more meaning and impact.  Firstly, tonight at the local takeaway a deaf and mute lady had just seemingly purchased some food but the counter assistant was trying to explain that she hadn't enough money.  The counter assistant actually took the food off the woman and threw it in the bin.  Clearly embarrassed the woman left, had I arrived earlier I would have paid the difference (which was minimal as far as I could make out).  There is something fundamentally wrong with the mentality that not enough money devalues the product to the point where it can be wasted entirely, especially in a country where food banks are increasingly common as some people's only source of food.

Secondly whilst waiting for my girlfriend earlier on I witnessed a man so crippled he had to use crutches to walk and such was the extent of his pain/disability that it literally took him 2 mins to cover a few feet.  Yet he still took the time to pause and nod greetings to and smile at those who he passed.

All i had to worry about was the cost of a car repair. Ridiculous.

Yeah the world has a funny way of doing that to you mate. It's been my attitude for a very long time now that there's no point in feeling sorry for myself because of my vision impairment. If I don't let it stop me from doing the things I want to am I really disabled? Seems that would be the case of that second person.

Had to clear my room out today and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, while I did it I had a mix of Judas Priest and Motörhead on, I come down later and my sister was there (she came round for a ay) and says I'd rather not listen to that devil music thank you! I couldn't help but laugh she sounded just like an old woman xD

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
