Van Eyck's Adam and Eve:

...from the Ghent Altarpiece, which is worth perusing in detail (there is a website somewhere with mind-blowingly hi res photos of the whole thing):

Lamgods_open.jpg

This polychrome Lamentation sculpture at the Cloisters:

DP366884.jpg

Some of the figures in Rogier van der Weyden's "Last Judgement" for the Beaune altarpiece (also look at his "Deposition":

Rogier_van_der_Weyden_(1399of1400-1464)_

Most arresting for me, personally, is the Godelieve polyptych ("Murder Of St Godelieve"), especially the expressionlessness of the figures in her martyrdom scene on the right, which I've spent hours viewing in person:

DT224782.jpg

Fra Angelico's "Entombment":

entombment-1440.jpg

I find their lack of expression captivating, and somehow more emotionally weighty and convincing than the overwrought drama of some later works like Rubens' "Crucifixion of St Peter".

I have to say that the best example of the tension I'm talking about, though, is later - one of my favorite paintings, David's "Death of Marat":

Happy I can finally share one of the pieces I worked on earlier this year - a cover illustration for In Human Form's upcoming album "III":

I'm nearly done with this piece. Let's see if photo embedding works again...

@FatherAlabaster The Adam and Eve comparison most got my attention. Looks like they were intentionally made with a resemblance. Interesting that Adam covers his chest but Eve seems content to go bare-breasted. What are the figures on the top right doing? Top left looks like Cain and Abel but the other one is harder for me to figure out.

The other scene is Cain and Abel making sacrifices of harvest and livestock, respectively.

Oh, OK! I thought I saw sheaves of wheat. Interesting then that the discord between brothers is placed over Eve.

I don't have any art to show for it, but as a brief tangent I think the deep sea/ocean more generally as an alternative to space is underappreciated. Lots of really cool vistas and and atmosphere. The guy who writes One Piece might be the only author I know of who's explored it to a really appreciable extent within a more modern fantasy medium. Biggest draw of ocean over space is that there's so much life down there of such a variety.

Hey BAN, here's the sketch I mentioned. I don't know if they'll wind up going forward with this idea, but I'm pretty happy with it regardless. Would be fun to turn into a painting.

Looks pretty cool! Even if it doesn't fit for their album, it would be awesome to see it in color.

That reminds me, do you have Cody's email address? I have it in my old email, but I'm still locked out of that account. Can you PM it to me?

Looks cool, really like the shape and textures on the trees. Is that the same character from your profile picture?

Thanks man! And, yeah, I guess you could think of the figure that way - it means the same thing in this image that it does in the other one. The figure will probably be changed a bit for the final cover design, though.

I thought that I would share this here.  I made this for the art contest that Militant Zone recently put on, and ended up winning second place.  It is a collage - the first that I ever really made.  Any recommendations on where I can improve?

First off, considering that this is your first attempt at making a collage, then it is very well done :)

Now asssuming that you have used at photo editing program to make it, then perhaps softening the edges...just a tad...would improve future projects. A real "Wow!" factor would be adding some shadows, either using an added shadow tool or a Burn tool - as for the latter, go for baby steps - it is hard to religthning a shadow even with a Dogde tool, without the whole thing looking like a real mess!

All my artwork involves cutouts set up in a collage method primarely using Photoshop. Got any questions or need advice...well, I would be happy to help and you know where to find me :)

Thank you for your kind words and advice.  I actually made this collage by cutting out pieces of paper by hand, and then gluing them to a piece of cardboard.  That being said, I agree that the edges could definitely have been cleaned up a bit more.  I think I will have to be a bit more patient next time!  I like the idea of adding shadows, though - perhaps watercolors could work?

Do you have any pictures of your work here?  I would be interested to see them.

I have no experience in working with watercoulours, so I am afraid that I cannot give you any advice on that. But give it a try...it might just work :)

You can see my Online portfolio here. Starts with the first projects I made, scroll down for most recent ones. The early ones make me cringe...but it is fun to see how I have developed my skills during the years. Feel free to download anything that you like :)

I like the atmosphere and lighting.  The glow on the lamps is especially cool!

Here's a variant of a cover I recently finished for a dark neoclassical outfit called Autumn Tears:

On a side note I'm annoyed with the broken links above, and I'll try to fix them asap.

Can't see it there, but was it for this release by any chance?

Absolutely love that cover if so. Good CD, too. I was sent a review copy 😁

That's the one! Thanks man, glad you like it. I also did a variant that they may have used for a vinyl release, for which that cover image was actually just the "underpainting":

Also, welcome back, it's great to see you around here again. :)

Wow, also very cool!!

And thanks 🤘

I've been trying to teach myself to paint for about six months now. Haven't done anything particularly 'metal' so far (or indeed anything good 😂) but anyway...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!
