Hell no' date=' I'd sit at the council of Nicea using a giant staff to whack the idiot who said Jesus was inviting man to divine cannibalism.[/quote'] Ah come on, "this do in remembrance of me" is obviously mistranslated from the original Aramaic for "get everyone to try these yummy crackers, they turn to meat on the way down". :D

Ah come on' date=' "this do in remembrance of me" is obviously mistranslated from the original Aramaic for "get everyone to try these yummy crackers, they turn to meat on the way down". :D[/quote'] Well, Aramaic was a trade language, so the meaning was a bit bastardized, I think what it originally meant was 'I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through worshiping bread.'

A possible tie-in to Pastafarianism? For what are noodles but floppy strings of bread' date=' and therefore what are our souls but floppy strings of the almighty sea of pasta strands and sauce?[/quote'] I wondered how long it'd take before this nefarious cult reared its ugly head here once more.

The Pit of Shaving Cream holds no horrors for the Internally Tonsured.
Nay, the cream of removal may yet rend whisker from face long after growth from crown hath subsided. In his own wisdom, the Bestower of Hair himself may choose to remove the hair of youth, but a man granted the gift of Beard may possess it until his dying day. Were it not for the sins of the razor, mankind may not have wrought its own doom by way of abominations such as the neck beard and the chin strap. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

The line is' date=' "'Do what thou wilt' shall be the whole of the law." You have an interesting interpretation and I honestly don't know enough about it to say whether it's correct, but my reading of the lyrics is that they're specifically referring to a ritual in Thelema where the celebrant recites a rhyme including that line and then eats a cake that he's dipped in his own blood. In that I think ritual "Magick" is egoistic garbage, I can get behind the criticism, though in a more general sense I disagree with the lyrics.[/quote'] I only came to that interpretation by reading into the quote my knowledge of Crowley's association with witchcraft. It probably isn't what he inteded by it but the quote is sufficiently vague as to allow any number of interpretations.

Crowley was an occultist, not a practitioner of "witchcraft". Ritual magic(k) like what Crowley taught/followed is derived from various esoteric origins, whereas so called witchcraft pertains to the rituals of pagans. Despite some esoteric spiritual leanings, I can't really say that I buy into either one. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

So, as usual, I'm wrong. Think it's about time I just stop wasting everyone's time and avoid these kinds of discussions.

So' date=' as usual, I'm wrong. Think it's about time I just stop wasting everyone's time and avoid these kinds of discussions.[/quote'] Not getting huffy about it, just making a correction. It's understandable, witchcraft is frequently used as a catch-all term for any non-Christian ritual by Christians, sort of like their catch-all "devil-worship" term for any non-Christian deification. The differences between Wicca, magick, tarot, esotericism, Thelema, theistic and symbolic Satanism are kind of lost on many Christians. To be perfectly honest I'm not particularly well up on them myself.

Hey ban I'm not a selfish person And also ban did you Hear that a metal blade sign a band from Salt Lake City. Utah I think it's. Val something
Yeah, Visigoth, they actually signed six months ago. I think they're just making the official announcement now because they're getting ready to drop their debut album. We've played shows with them before, there is a video up on YouTube of our Slug Magazine Localized show that we played with them and Huldra, but unfortunately they're just short clips of each band. We've had some personality issues with them in the past, but we have worked through them, and I hope that they succeed. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

There's a snowball's chance in hell of us making it on a big label like Metal Blade, but hopefully we can find a small label that digs what we are doing so that we can reach a wider audience. I have no delusions of grandeur, doom/death just doesn't sell much, but I think we would at least gain a few more fans if more people had heard us. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Iceni like the Salem witch trials. In Salem massachutes. Right to that effect
Not really. The Salem witch trials were sparked by three young girls accusing people at random of being witches who cursed them leading to their being caught doing I-can-never-remember-what. The mass hysteria caused by one little lie was sufficient to cause one of the most horrific acts of persecution in American history. I'm not sure there is any real power in the various incarnations of magic described around the world but the idea that people could be executed for practicing such things as recently as 200 years ago is quite disturbing. It is somewhat ironic that in more modern times the practice of Wicca is viewed as a perfectly acceptable new-age religion.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
