What Are You Listening To?

Pain of Salvation - Chain Sling "Please let me be yours please never leave Please stay here close to me All the love we shared, where is it now? Please let me be better than I was Pleas don't give up on us The thought of leaving you - I do not know how" "I can feel the pain you have inside I see it in your eyes Those eyes that used to shine for me I can feel the wildness in your heart That's tearing us apart My love how can I help if you don't want me?" Those two verses, so recognizable for me. But also the way how Daniel sings them, like it's a voice in his heard, sort of. Really amazing song.

Alice in Chains- The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here May be in the minority here, but I think I prefer this to BGWTB. It's got a really different vibe, almost similar to Facelift in a way. And this might be backed up by their playing such a Facelift-heavy set when I saw them back in November.

Gotta be Hollow, man. I remember when that track was released and it just floored me. Definitely my favourite Duvall-era AIC track and probably up there with some of the Layne classics! I love the last track, Choke, as well, and Breath On A Window is awesome, too! I love every track, really. :) What's yours?

Awesome! :D What other bands you into?
Haha, I think it's kinda impossible to name every band I like, cause I'm in a lot into different subgenres. But melodeath and death/doom are my favorites, but I also really enjoy atmospheric black metal on the right moment, I like some thrash and I even appreciate some metalcore bands. To still give you bit an idea, a few of my favorite bands: Insomnium, Austere, Dark Tranquillity, Pain of Salvation (on this moment :P ), Opeth, Dream Theater, Killswitch Engage, Eye of Solitude, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Anathema, Saturnus, Alcest, Ellende, Iced Earth, Ghost Brigade, Solstafir, Kreator, etc. etc. I made a year ago also a list when I just joined here, if you're interested, it's slightly different, but most bands I sill like: http://metalforum.com/introductions/1913-hey-there.html

Nice! I love quite a few of those bands. Gojira are great and gotta love My Dying Bride! Cool to see another Machine Head fan on here as well. The Blackening is one of my favourite metal albums of all time! :D What are Pain of Salvation like? I'm into quite a lot of metalcore myself; both the raw/harsh stuff and some of the modern melodic stuff most people here seem to hate. :P

The Blackening is really good indeed, but I also love Unto the Locust. Pain of Salvation is some really nice progmetal or rock, but they are a bit hard to get into. If you're interested, you should check out Remedy Lane, which is an amazing album. They may sound a bit weird at the first, but you'll get used to it :) I'm not a big fan of metalcore myself, but there are some bands I can listen to, like KsE, first two/three albums of BfmV, As I Lay Dying, Caliban, Carnifex, All That Remains and Dreamshade.

Unto The Locust is a great album and, for my money, nowhere near the letdown some people say it was, but it still doesn't reach the heights of The Blackening for me. That album is just a modern metal classic imo. Cheers! I'll check that album out soon. Quite like some proggy metal. I'm not really into any of the metalcore bands you listed, except for AILD, and for some reason have yet to check pout Kilswitch. For melodic metalcore like those bands, I dig While She Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow, Crossfaith (Japanese band who cross melodic metalcore with trance/rave influences), Parkway Drive and probably a few others I can't quite think of right now. One of my favourites is a band called 36 Crazyfists, a sort of metalcore/post-hardcore band with really cool vocals (doesn't quite do it justice, but imagine Kilswitch Engage crossed with Glassjaw and even a little Deftones, and you'll get a sort of idea how they sound). For the rougher/harder metalcore, I like Cancer Bats, Sick Of It All, Norma Jean, Chariot, Every Time I Die and, for just disgusting noise, I like Nails and Brotherhood of the Lake. Poison The Well are great, too. They kind of pioneered the modern metalcore sound about 15 years ago and seldom seem to get the credit they deserve.

I find myself playing their A Snow Capped Romance a lot. Sent from my LGMS500 using Tapatalk

Fucking awesome album! Glad to find another fan! :D Consistently amazing band. Rest Inside The Flames is probably my favourite. The latest one is incredible as well. A lot heavier, which meant it took longer to really appreciate (as I've never really thought of them as being that heavy), but Brock's voice has improved and the album's just got so many huge tunes!

I've heard some good things about While She Sleeps and 36 Crazyfists, so I'll check them out soon I think :) Bury Tomorrow is also quite nice from what I've heard of them. Maybe you'll also like I Am Heresy: some nice melodic hardcore :)

If you have any passing interest in metalcore or post-hardcore, or even just huge anthemic rock songs with killer vocals, you'd have to be a strange kind of person not to like them. Start with A Snow Capped Romance or Rest Inside The Flames. They're the most immediate. :D I'd highly recommend While She Sleeps' This Is The Six. Insane album. One of my favourites from 2012 and probably one of my favourite metalcore albums. Super heavy (not far off Crowbar-heavy) riffs at points and the clean vocal parts don't sound like they're being performed by a 13-year-old girl. It's quite forward-thinking and a little different to the more generic metalcore out there. I've heard of I Am Heresy. Pretty sure I'll dig them. Really into that style atm. :)

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
