NP-40 Watt Sun/Behind My Eyes (2022)-classified as doom but it's very beautiful and mellow, with an acoustic-like-Americana sound to my ears-that makes me think of some of Panopticon's non metal passages-ultimately a reflective gentle singer songwriter feel. I have two earlier albums, The Inside Room and Wider Than The Sky. This was the direction he was going into-minimal confessional somber music.  No metal here so far. This is gorgeous stripped down sad boy gentle minimalistic rock. In fact, Bandcamp tag-alternative. I like it at first blush

I really enjoyed his previous one until I got tired of it and it began to grate on me. I have dipped into the new one and it just annoys me. Horses for courses.

I had this Gorgon album ranked quite highly earlier in the year, and then at some point I stared second guessing myslef and wondering if maybe it sounded too comercial and too basic to deserve a top 20 spot. But in the end I realized that I really fucking liked the damn record and I should probably stop overthinking things and just rank it where I felt it belonged.

Well to be fair I did post my death metal list on the Listmania thread several weeks ago, and I believe that list contained no less than 23 death metal and black/death albums.

As for the punk rock well I'm not sure if I really had a massive amount of punk rock from 2021. It seems to take me longer to find the punk stuff on my own and it always seems like I'm finding more punk based stuff from previous years than the current year. I will say that 2 Headed Dogs album that I got from you deserved a high spot on my year end list, I played the ever-loving shit out of that one all year long. But I guess that's the flaw in my separate sub-genres list format, I don't have enough punk albums to make an entire list of just punk so it gets left out. And quite honestly I get a large percentage my punk based stuff from you anyway my friend, so I was kinda counting on you to make a year end list and include all the coolest punk stuff for me. I'm not always sure where to draw the line between death or black metal and crust/punk/grind anyway, so a lot of the punkier black metal I find gets swept up along witht the rest of the black metal, I don't separate it. Deffinitely have much love for the punkier end of the black and death metal spectrums though.

Scrolling down my MusicBee I see there were several stand outs from the punk side of things which I managed to grab this year....

2 Headed Dogs - The Engine is On

Ogro - Ogro

Iron Lizards - Hungry for Action

Mist of Doom - Night

World In Ruins - In Misery

Downwinder - S/T

Cruel Master - Repeat Offender

La Peste - Humanity is the Plague

Hungry Wölf - Forgotten Frozen Lands

The Grail - Black Craft

....all of those records are great picks.....I'll make a list of records for 2021...markm  had asked me about it a few weeks back, so I can make one....

DARVAZA - Ascending Into Perdition

AUTOSARCOPHAGY - Dolor

Belore - Artefacts

Saw someone say this was similar to Stormkeep, but better...think I'm just not in the right headspace for it, because it's feeling a bit overdone...like it's too melodic and too synthy

Well, the art looks like it's for a new Disney coming-of-age story about the Horned God, so maybe that's no surprise?

Yeah...but don't misunderstand me. That kind of stuff isn't a deal breaker for me when it's done right. I'm a long time fantasy fan, and I absolutely love some of those epic atmospheric bands like Saor or Caladan Brood. That Belore album just felt like it was cranked up a couple of notches too far

Paydretz - Chroniques de l'Insurrection

I'm actually kind of interested by that description. Been a lot more ok with keyboards over the past couple years. I like some epic stuff too, although there's a fine balance... I don't know Caladan Brood. I like Saor though, Guardians is an amazing album. I'll listen to way fruitier stuff on occasion, especially when I'm in a power metal mood.

Absolutely. If I'm in the right mood then bring on the cheese, because I'll happily blast some power metal.

I think like everything, there's a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it, and usually the difference is razor thin. Good bands or at least good albums, seem to know how to go right up to that line without quite overstepping it. Like, if you've ever listened to Twilight Force's first album vs their second album you can hear the difference between an album that found the right balance and an album that leaned too far into it

Awesome album!  In my quest to get better acquainted with Saxon, I'm enjoying "Unleash the Beast" immensely.

It’s such a good album :D can’t stop listening this week, I especially love the title track and Bloodletter.

Have yet to listen to their newest album though, got it on CD just haven’t opened it yet! Want to save it for a rainy day or something lol when i’m off work and can enjoy it fully.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
