I always used to prefer the debut. Garm's early vocals never cease to amaze me. But I think it's safe to say "Empiricism" has become my favorite of theirs at this point.

Like a lot of bands, they moved quite a distance from the sound of their debut. It’s a great album, I love it. I haven’t vibed quite as much with ‘Olden..’ and ‘Archaic...’ but everything else is great. I think the musical philosophy changed a lot since the debut, but they’re all great. It’s great. Gr8.

NP: Amorphis playlist.

I'm with you on that to an extent -- The Olden Domain has never resonated with me in the same way, and I'm just not a fan of Vortex. Vintersorg's vocals on Empiricism are fucking amazing, gr8 is as good a way to describe them as any.

Are you a fan of ‘Winter Thrice’? Just beautiful vocal interchange between Vintersorg, Vortex and Lars Nedland (and Trickster G himself on the title track).

All the albums from ‘Empiricism’ onward are gr8 Vintersorg moments. Obviously I’m not the biggest fan of progressive music but for some reason the notes of Borknagar have really hit a chord with me.

Rapture - 'Songs for the Withering'

Amazing melodic doom band that never got the full esteem they deserved.

The twin melodic leads that start and continue throughout "Gallows" = heaven. Stunning song. Stunning production. Great album.

Recent listens include King Diamond "The Spider's Lullaby" (the first half in particular is classic King. Underrated album), and Abigail. I've also been pounding the song "Magic" from The Puppet Master, which is surely one of the finest KD classic songs of all time (off an otherwise average album). Go on - give it a listen (you know you want to).

I’ll give it a listen.

NP: new Rotting Christ songs. Much enjoyment.

Dimmu Borgir - 'Eonian'

I'm convinced that a lot of the critics of this album didn't give it ample time to sink in and gel with them. Obviously if you've never liked Dimmu you're going to hate this album, but if you're in anyway Dimmu/dark commercial metal inclined, this album is just amazing. It continues to open up with each listening, even after 30-40+ plays. I'm very impressed.

I'd be concerned that Dimmu Borgir would be missing out on genuine accolades if it wasn't for the fact that they sold out the first Melbourne show and played a second, so they're obviously not doing too badly.

Was: Type O Negative - 'World Coming Down'. Apart from a couple of songs I find this pretty boring. Not enough songs about girls. I like goils.

Now: Theatre of Tragedy - 'Aegis'. This is more like it. This reminds me of when I was on campus at university and my current girlfriend (goils!) would put this on prior to settling in for the night, if you know what I mean. As much as I love this album, and it's a beautiful gothic record, it's hard to untangle it from those late night sessions, when life was new and the whole world was at our feet. Beautiful, classic, music with early modern, Shakespeare, style lyrics - the final time this band would do that. Liv Kristine at her absolute peak. Haunting and gorgeous.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!
