What Are You Listening To?

Hey  Storm and Alabaster,

First of all, I'd like to offer you my best wishes for 2016, although I do realise I'm a bit late with that...

I'm not doing too bad really; tomorrow I have a job interview for a job in a supermarket in spe here which does offer me a chance to eventually be employed and next week I'm invited to give a hunting store my best shot.

As for other aspects: I'm reading more than I've done during the previous years and sadly, that counts for drinking too, which is becoming a problem to be honest. What concerns music: I'm progressing very quickly, perhaps a bit due my recent involvement in electronical music.

Anyway, I'll save more personal comments for PM's, but it's great to be here again. How haveou guys been doing? :)

I've been ok, working on a bunch of music and artwork although it's progressing far too slowly for my liking. I just finished a very short grind EP with a vocalist I like, working on Black Harvest, painting a bit. It's nice to have you back around, please do PM me if you want.

I'll be sure to send you a more detailed message later, as the clock as almost reached 4AM here and -as most people- I'm not too sharp at this hour. I'd be delighted to hear your new musical output though :)

Is it me or did the forum suddenly come over all Belgian? Good to hear from you again Midi. All the best with your possible jobs.

Well well, I've tried to intepret that first sentence, which led me to assume that one of two following conclusions is quite plausible:
- The forum has been hijacked by fellow countrymen. This option wouldn't be too bad as we all know Belgian beer is the ****.
- My previous post was formulated in poor English.

Anyway, how are you, RO? It's been a while since I've really used the internet, so it's more than safe to say I'm not up to date of the situations occurring in either MF member's life.

I'm sensational and getting better. Between planning a holiday, preparing to resume my uni degree, steadily improving my guitar playing, and absolutely killing it on the bike life could not get any better. That being said I'm getting a touch lonely and am slightly contemplating joining a dating site.

That sounds quite splendid!
If I'm not mistaking you were studying for a law degree?
It's nice to hear you're doing well on the bike as well (it still isn't chess, but anyway... ;P ). Which type of competition are you into nowadays; tandem/single/...? Any big leagues in sight? :)

That's correct I am (or will shortly be) resuming my law degree. Still the tandem, those magic pills to fix my eyesight didn't work but wow I got wicked hallucinations :D It's about a month to National Road Titles and I am so much more prepared this time.

I started a thread for the new project in the promo section. We're called "Crisis Actor". You may dig it. Also posted a new BH track a little while ago. I just hope I can find the time to make some more progress soon. I'd like to hear what you're working on, as well.

Diocletian "Doom Cult"

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

Well, I went looking for this on Youtube, and listened to just a bit of it and some of the other blackness next to it. I can't see myself ever coming around to listening to the more extreme types of metal with any enjoyment I guess. I get the appeal of it to some degree. I kind of dig the album art of those bands with it's deeply satanic or luciferian imagery. Also I recognize the skill and effort that many of them put into their art. And here is the thing that I most appreciate about that stuff, that it combines anti-aesthetic goals with what, for the sake of this post, I'm going to refer to as "craftsmanship". That puts it in contrast to hardcore music (the comparison is meant to be helpful, not to bust on hardcore which is it self not without merit in my view).

Anyway I've been thinking a lot recently about the best use of musical effort, if that phrase makes any sense to anyone. I've been thinking about the aesthetic qualities of music and weather or not they are contributory. Serious musical composition is full of it, just like most other types of music are full of aesthetic niceties for better or worse. That aesthetic stuff is like a show of fitness, or a display of understanding and intellect. Mostly it operated in the realm of tonality (that is to say melody and harmony) and reveals the prowess of the makers. The virtuosity on display in the solos of lots of metal laid down by lead guitar players for the most part is also an example of that sort of thing, obviously, kind of like List and Paganini did of late, and to me it can appear vulgar. At least when I'm paying attention to it, it seems vulgar. The creation of mood is more my speed, and that is done more with tempo and tone as far as I can tell. So there is an indication of what I would pursue from the list of musical qualities, should I have the skill to do so.

I have the skill already, it is the work habbits that I lack, to sit down and record what I'm already able to do. I'm weak in the areas of pitch and harmony, so my whole post here may be an expression of sour grapes as far as that goes.

But back to what I'm trying to say. I like the power that music has to create mood, and I dig a slower tempo and not too much chaos, so that is why I don't like Black Metal, because it's mood is not the mood I want, but that said, I think that it is amazing because it is so mood focused with it's reliance on tempo (which is to say rhythm) and tone quality over melody and harmony.

After listening to some black metal this morning I retreated into some old stuff, specifically Manilla Road - Invasion. There I found a taste of the chaos that was too strong for me In Diocletion, Septuagint, Psudogod, or Odraza.

Someone posted on the forum a while ago that visual representation of revolutionary forms of art more easily gains appreciation than music does. I guess that may be true for me, so I'm not giving up on black metal just yet.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
