SWALLOW THE SUN - Morning Never Came

FLUISTERAARS - Gegrepen Door de Geest der Zielsontluiking

BOSCO SACRO - Gem. Gothy with rather nice female vocals

NP - BING SATELLITES - Tales From Infinity. You won't like it...unless you like long form electronic ambience.

Fluisteraars - Gegrepen Door de Geest der Zielsontluikin, every once in awhile Doc'll come up with a good one.

Not so sure about your Italian doomsters Ossobuco. They sound like they've been hanging around with Messa. But then apparently they must've gotten high and forgot to bring their guitars with them the day they were scheduled to go into the studio to record the album so they said fuck it and made an ambient album instead.

They also drink at "Lemmy's Bar", they also used the original Motorhead Bomber stage lighting set for at least one of the tours, but they don't sound like Motorhead. The media here started the AC/DC comparisons when they were breaking the scene, it doesn't mean they aren't influenced by them, just that the media needed a popular connection.

NP: Racer X - Street Lethal

That definitely makes sense!  Hopefully, we'll get a new Airbourne release some time this year.  It's been about 4 years since the last one, which I guess isn't a huge surprise, given how the pandemic threw a wrench into everything.  Lots of great releases coming this year.  Can't wait for the new Overkill on April 14.  I'm trying to get psyched about the new Metallica album, which is due out that exact same day, but it's been awhile since I was amped up for one of theirs.  The whole Load/Reload era left a sour taste for me for sure.

In Flames - Foregone

So this isn't terrible, but it's also not melodeath. At least not in the sense that I think of it although there is a moment here or there (Foregone Pt. 1 & 2 is closer to it than some of the other songs). More so modern European radio metal. Something I'd expect SiriusXM to go nuts over (that's the satellite radio equivalent to terrestrial radio in the States. Not sure if everybody is familiar). I can hear Jose Mangin going nuts over this. Closer to Reroute to Remain that Colony. That's not a dig by any means. I liked RtR when it came out and the one that came right after. I'd agree that it's the best they've done since then. I'd probably go see them if they toured in my area and the setlist was light on the past 3-4 albums, but only if I didn't have much else going on and it was a weekend. I did see them in 06 I think and they put on a good show (except they didn't play Artefacts of Black Rain which is the only song I really wanted to hear...).

They have mentioned being in the studio again, but they are also booked for the summer euro circuit so who know what they will end up doing.

Overkill will be a first day buyer for me, not sure about Metallica, I'll definitely give it a listen but unless it really does excel I wont be buying it.

Leper Colony - Leper Colony (2023)

Ulthar - Anthonomicon (2023)

Ulthar - Helionomicon (2023)

Viking - Do or Die (EP) (1986)

I will never understand the difference in production quality between Viking's 3-track Do or Die demo and the album of the same name released a year later.

On the 1987 album, the sound is almost not stereo at all and it breaks all the energy that the musicians put into their music. What a mess.

Terra Odium - Ne Plus Ultra (2021)

Testament - First Strike Still Deadly (2001)

Tankard - Chemical Invasion (1987)

Slayer - Christ Illusion (2006)

Le Chant Noir - La Société Satanique des Poètes Morts (2021)

Vektor - Black Future (2009)

Did you know that the UK and US (+rest of world) LP release of Bark at the Moon had completely different track listings? Not only different sequence but some different songs. I grew up on the US version and so that is definitive but, being in the UK, it's bloody hard to come by on eBay. I'd looked into it before, but the other day was the first time I found one reasonably priced.

As with practically every band of the classic era, only the first six Ozzy albums are worth having. I will camp out for The Ultimate Sin next (having acquired Blizzard and Diary years ago). Which I was never a big fan of, but it is in the classic zone.

Bark at the Moon is remarkably good, considering it came out only a year after Randy took a nosedive. It is a testament to the songwriting of Bob Daisley, who kept coming back for more punishment no matter how many times he got screwed over.

You know I'm almost tempted to dial it up and give it a go since I've never heard it. But then I figure I've made it through life just fine for the last 40 years without ever hearing it (except for the two radio songs: the title track and R&R Rebel, neither of which I particularly care for - apologies to Mr. Daisley) so why break my streak now? I did have the first two Ozzy/Randy records back in the day, but I don't think I've had occasion to listen to them since the 80's.

If you're ever in the market for some good albums from 1983 Jon, forget Ozzy, stop barking at the moon, and track down some of these:

Burn - Burn, Sweden

Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac, Canadia

Oz - Fire in the Brain, Finland

Savage – Loose 'N Lethal, UK

Chateaux – Chained and Desperate, UK

Crossfire- See You In Hell, Belgium

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
