What Are You Listening To?

I typically listen to all three albums in a row. They really should be due ripping a new one.

I left London ten years ago, when I used to live just off Baker Street and close to everything. Now I live a full half hour train ride north (although an hour back late at night because, unfathomably, they slow the trains down).

I can be in Camden in an hour from home. Christ, FA puts me to shame if he's willing to travel 4 hours. I balk at an hours' travel. Because. I. Hate. Commuting.

Anything located within the M25 is London as far as I'm concerned. Once you're up into Hertfordshire (aka Nowhereshire) and you have a shorter drive to Cambridge than to Buckingham Palace that's when you're out of London. I could never live in metro London. As someone who's never been an urbanite I find all those thousands of sq km of attached brick row houses on very narrow roads to be rather depressing and claustrophobic. Our suburbs tend to be a bit more spread out with standalone houses. Is all of the UK like that? Every English town big or small I drop the little yellow Google Maps guy into looks exactly the same, block after block of attached brick row houses. Well maybe not exactly the same, some of Nottingham's brick row houses were done in Tudor style, and I saw Bristol had some hills, those were both a nice change of pace.

I don't think FA travels 4 hours for a gig these days, especially since I'd imagine a lot of those bands that play a Brooklyn gig might also be playing another gig somewhere a bit closer to him up in Beantown. I think it's just knowing that he used to be within walking distance and that he could still theoretically be there in 4 hours that eats at him. Especially considering what he has to listen to on holiday mornings such as this one as he's changing poopie diapers with an endless mug full of rum at the ready.

Which denomination are you, A reformed Traegerist?

Devout Greeneggist. Honestly, I resisted throwing down a grand on a smoker for the longest, but goddamn I love this thing. Had it about 2 years and the only regret I have is that I didn't get a bigger one. Traegers are decent, but if I was to go the pellet route, I'd get a Yoder.

You will surely get annoyed by someone in the course of your life who wants to evangelize the gospel of the egg. I surely was, but I can tell you they are absolutely right. Fish, ribs, steak, burgers, turkey... fuck I've even made pizza on this thing and it's all been banging.

IMPERIUM DEKADENZ - When We Are Forgotten. Great album, and 'Transcendence' is one of my favourite songs.

Didn't annoy the neighbours because it was through headphones on a run on a glorious spring morning. The arctic weather system has passed and the rain has stopped at least for the time being. Heading to 24C today and it is a great day to be alive!

Actually, I'm not really a fan of King Buffalo. Jon prolly likes them more than I do, but  I think Jon and I are in agreement they are serviceable as background rock music. I know they are sometimes labeled as a stoner band. I think of them as a stoner adjacent progressive jam band. Nothing wrong with that but not much wow factor.

General of Whitenoise you like the stoner with hyuge riffage with punk attitude. I get that and like that style too. To me Wo Fat is more nuanced blues rock stoner with a kind of Stevie Ray Vaughan jam feel. They do take their time to get to the point though.

Cavernlight/As We Cup Our Hands and drink from the Stream of our Ache (2017)-dig the new Cavernlight album so revisiting their last one.....

Driving back and forth to my Mom's retirement home pushing music my wife will semi tolerate

Lana Del Rey/Norman Fucking Rockwell-one of the pop albums in recent years I genuinely like for its homage to 70's Laurel Canyon musical scene of the 60's-70's

Then, Rainbow/Rising and Scorpions/Love Drive-afterwards I asked her, so what do you think of those two albums-"it's just noise"-but she didn't tell me to "turn that shit off". For the record, she liked Love Drive slightly better remembering the overplayed track-Rock You Like a Hurricane and doesn't hate power ballads and referred to Rising as "one of those pussy bands" meaning of course bands like Poison and Whitesnake...-after 28 years of marriage, I'll have to take that with a rye smile.

Swans/Filth-Because the heavenly Father Alabaster tells me I need to listen it again-It has a certain charm.

Well, I'm not being very successful at annoying my neighbors either, but I am bothering the missus quite a bit so I shall take some solace in that.

Meanwhile, Kuke is "bothering your livestock" and soon he'll be doing something with your beanfield.

It's undisputed facts, (undisputed because no  one has bothered to do a counter study), that cows react well to music, especially during milking time. They apparently prefer soft, slow, pop type music. So it stands to reason that if I'm toughing up beef cattle something hard and heavy is the key. I think I'll stay out of nav's beanfield though, nothing worse than someone uninvited playing in your beanfield.

You are certainly welcome to frolic in my beanfield at any time you like.

She exiled me to my office about halfway through Morbid Angel - Blessed Are the Sick which was fine by me. I was tired of pretending to like hanging with family anyway. Wife, dogs, cat...cool. Everyone else, well at least they're not sleeping here.

Now it's just Geddy & me listening to New Order in the dark because we're the cool ones.

Tyrant - The Lowest Level

Hard to define/describe - there's elements of thrash but mainly a modern take on heavy metal.  Some comment described it as a mix of Sanctuary and Metallica which is pretty sound.  Due to vocals and somewhat mechanical approach, I'd say mix of Sanctuary and Evile.

Not bad at at all.

Didn't know what you were referring to so I had to Google this 70's Laurel Canyon thing.

"Laurel Canyon was home to various members of the Byrds, the Doors, Love and Buffalo Springfield; to Frank Zappa, the Mamas & the Papas, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Joni Mitchell. It gave us folk rock, country rock and a wealth of singer-songwriters."

Haha if they would have included the Dead, the Eagles, Toto and the Doobie Bros they would have just listed pretty much every California band I hated from the 70's. Except for the Mamas & the Papas, I have fond memories of liking them as a kid, and I did have that one 32 million selling Joe Walsh & the Eagles album in high school too.

Skull Water Pipe – Flight Zone

Yes yuge downtuned riffage, check. 5 pound ceramic bong on the end table, check. Punk attitude, check. But nuanced? No can do. I guess I'm that asshole who doesn't have the patience to wait for them to get to the point.

Mate of mine used of have those kinds of bongs.  They were all horrid to smoke out of and in the end nothing beat an old Iced Coffee bottle with a bit of garden hose.

Though I learned by 18 that I couldn't stand effect of dope.  I'm already foggy a lot of the time and I just hated getting stoned.  Didn't dig ecstasy either - it just made me feel sober.  Now dexamphetamine was something that I could understand though tried it once and thought "nah, I don't need to go down that rabbit hole" after seeing mates on speed shooting up.

Only slightly better than dope but still horrid was a legal medication they put me on called lyrica (pregabailin).  Fuck that shit.  I felt like I was literally not in my own body.

Basically booze and coffee are my preferred poisons.

I had a massive red ceramic one shaped like a microscope I bought in the early 80's that I used to smoke out of at home for years. But there was a learning curve, you just had to learn not to hit it too hard or for too long before you took your finger off the hole or else you'd blow out your lungs with a 10 minute coughing fit. I had a little 6" acrylic one for my travel bong but it didn't have the coolness factor of the big tabletop ceramic one. I quit smoking about 15 years ago (both weed and cigs) and I have no desire to breathe smoke into my lungs ever again for any reason. But I have missed getting high so now that THC gummies are legal here I can order them online and they come the next day. Weed was always my drug of choice, I never really felt the need to mess with any other drugs because I was happy from the start with weed. But things have changed man, I remember back in college ('79-'80) you could get a 4 finger bag, aprox 1 oz for $40. Now it's like $200+ an ounce, fuck that.

So how long doe those gummies last?  And is it the same as actually smoking it or heavily diluted?

EDIT: One reason why I like filling angry and enraged is because I literally feel awake and alive instead of in some sort of fugue state that I usually exist in.  Indeed right now I am at work but my mind is barely here.

And no I don't do any drugs!

Funny, that's the one medication I take. It's for neuropathy related to the 47 gallons of chemo I had and resulting nerve damage. If I don't take it, I can't walk or even tolerate socks. But I have 1) taken too much on accident and know exactly what you mean about not feeling like you are in your own body and 2) gone through withdrawals more than once. Fucking never again. Felt like a heroin addict short of dope. I absolutely hate the stuff, but it's a necessary deal with the devil to function normally.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
