Eskhaton - Horracle

Noisy Aussie death metal.  Really not my cup of tea.

Maybe not, but they're definitely my cup of tea 'cause I think this is fucking fantastic. Hadn't heard this new one yet as it's only just been released today, but I have their previous 2018 LP Omegalitheos. I think this new one ups their game to the next level. All their stuff is good though, at least for me, I'll be wanting to get the first two albums from '11 & '14 as well.

I should start a new thread and it would be called:

Music I should listen to but I'm too unmotivated, lazy or busy to bother with

To be fair, I get burnt out with the number of "meh" listens in today's clickbait metalverse.

Today's choices for music I should listen to that have at least a 50% chance of being listened to unless I'm lucky enough to have someone here tell me not to bother with and save me five precious minutes of my life are:

  • Antichrist Imperium: Vol. III-like everything else they've done-it's got a shot.
  • Peace Clinic/Bayonet / L.I.C.E. / Peace Clinic-It's all the rave on my Bandcamp feed. Some form of hardcore grind somethinerother.
  • Drudkh/All Belong to the Night-That Guy approved, so maybe after a few shots over the weekend, I'll give 'er a spin.

D'oh. I think Apocalyptic Witchcraft did send a bandcamp mailout but was deleted as I get about 50 in any given week. Automatic purchase without a second thought. Love these guys.

EDIT: now on last track. It is standard Imperium. I'll keep playing this one for sure.

I agree: there are so many things to listen to on the internet (bandcamp, youtube, streaming platforms) that it is impossible, if not very difficult, to find THE gem, the great album of the moment.

I rely on my friends to give me ideas of albums to listen to.

It's thanks to one of them that I recently discovered An Abstract Illusion and I loved it.

Otherwise, I read a lot of reviews on the Internet (webzines).

By doing so, I regularly manage to find bands and albums that I like.

And then, when I don't find anything new, I always have my old indispensable albums that I dive into with great pleasure.

Mark...you know I love you dude, and I know you've got this thing where you only want to listen to the "great" releases from any given year, but you also need to account for the fact that no one can build a list specifically for you other than you. That means you are going to have to put some effort into it yourself and wade through a lot of "meh" releases. Go sit on the rowing machine, throw some shit on, turn off your brain while you do a few sets, and see what catches the attention of your subconscious.

At the same time, you're not obligated to listen to anything. If you're bored or burned out, then don't bother with it. The music from 2022 isn't going anywhere just because the calendar rolls over to 2023. Hell, in some ways that might focus it a bit more, as hindsight is almost always better at gauging quality.

TL/DR: It's music, stop overthinking it so much

NP: Ontborg - Within The Depths Of Oblivion

Swedeath from Italy, walking some well worn territory, but it's decent enough, and I love the cover art

Of course you are correct, I just like to bitch or be a bitch as the case may be. I get a fair amount of new new material from the gang here and sometimes from reviews.  I'm reminded of the old Joe Walsh line, I can't complain but sometimes I still do.

The new one is a bit of a departure, make sure you listen before you buy.

Ha. Too late. I have implemented a new policy where I buy, sight unseen, a new release from a band that I reaally liked the last time round. I figure I owe them double for a really ace album. But, if they let me down, then they will be dead to me for future releases unless someone successfully argues their case.

As it happens, I just finished listening to Blue Nothing and I did do a double take at one point early on "Hmm...there are an awful lot of keys here." It started to remind me of Dimmu Borgir which is generally not a good thing.

But, seemed fine by the end. I like the guitarwork. Worm is not dead to me, it's just a little different.

I've only listened to BN once so far and not even all the way through til the bitter end. All I can really remember is there were a lot of keys and - hey this doesn't sound like the same Evoken worshiping band that did Foreverglade. As I remember I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Definitely not as compelling to me as the Glade was. I'll revisit it again at some point I'm sure. I don't mind when bands change things up a bit, as long as I like what they've changed it to. I tend to agree with the burn me once and then you're dead to me philosophy, but not having actually bought the new record I don't feel so much burned as perplexed. And it is just an EP consisting of 3 longer songs and a short instrumental. For all I know maybe they'll revert to their death/doom style for the next album. So I wouldn't say Worm is dead to me now, they're just on probation.

Currently:

Gods of Ancient - Historia Mali Et Lucis, some reasonably enjoyable if unspectacular Bulgarian death/doom

Lore/Elder- This is the only Elder album I consistently like although I haven't heard anything prior to Lore.  If you were to know my inclinations, you'd know that I like a fair amount of stoner and a shit ton of doom and sludge  and I can do meandering jam band, but I don't like it when stoner/doom bands go unleaded excepting something like Torche. Like, what's the point of being a stoner/doom band if you don't bring the bongzilla sized riffs???

Which is why I've been touting  the new Wo Fat album all year.  There's plenty of guitar heroics and even a little bit of prog,  but they consistently bring the RIFFFFAGE!

They're probably gonna do a Blood Incantation. Muhahaha

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
