Green River - Dry as Bone/Rehab Doll

This is pretty good.  Punk meets 1970s hardrock.   Occasionally has a Guns N Roses vibe (which makes sense as Guns N Roses were also hard rock meets punk) but I also get some Alice In Chains vibes from second half of Facelift.

....good on you WhiteNoise....check out some of these next....

GONE - Watch the Tractor

GONE - Gone II But Never Too Gone

CHROME - 3rd From the Sun

BAND OF SUSANS - Peel Session

SCRATCH ACID - The Greatest Gift

....I'll reco more if you want.....

Was working off your list of 'noise school' bands on the other thread. I'd heard Big Black before, Songs About Fucking, but was surprised at how different the debut sounded. So far from this batch of vids you posted I think I liked Band of Susans best, a punchy little EP I'll have to see if they have any more stuff. Liked that Chrome album as well which I also think I've heard before. Jesus Lizard was new to me but I liked them too, haven't gotten to their precursor band Scratch Acid yet. Gone didn't do a lot for me, I still have to find something from Cows and Big Boys.

I'm not really seeing why some of these bands are considered 'noise' at least not in the way I think of Sonic Youth and Big Black as being noise. At the end of the day they're all just punk bands to me, of one flavor or another, but I haven't heard all their albums obviously, I'm just randomly sampling.

Tar - Toast, 1993 I think this one's pretty cool too.

Big Black live at CBGB, NYC - July 13, 1986, this set is all kinds of fucking awesome. Except for the guitar player holding them up for 5 minutes to change his fucking string. Nothing like seeing a band live to get a feel for what they're all about. Even if it's just on youtube. I enjoyed this so much I wanna go bak in time to 1986 and be in the band.

Verminous Knight - Malignant Descent

Malignant Descent | Verminous Knight | Pile of Heads Productions (bandcamp.com)

Somehow this is now the most standard type of black metal coming through my feed. The lack of any hint of irony makes it more awesome. Grainy black and white art, corpse paint dude with sword, just another day at the office. Its pretty good too, actually.

Bloodnun - Butchered

Bloodnun - Only Death

My daughter just asked me if I'd heard of a black metal band she'd been listening to called Bloodnun. Of course I hadn't but just as I was preparing to disown her and ostracise her from the family for listening to black metal I found out her connection to the band is that it's one of the members of My Chemical Romance. When I told her that black metal is the devils music and shouldn't ever be listened to, she said, 'Yeah but if Frank can play it, it's proof anyone can play black metal!" Her family connection is being re-considered

You should disown her and ostracise her from the family for listening to My Chemical Romance.

SEDIMENTUM - Suppuration Morphogénésiaque. Crap band name and crapper album name, but pretty good DM.

CASTAVET - Mounds of Ass. Unfuckwithable.

Been waiting for this full length, the EP 3 years ago was pure death metal bliss for a simple man like me. I think the band name works, it conveys heaviness. As far as the album name goes, what's the matter Doc you don't like made up Frenglish words? Probably a better name than Mounds of Ass. The demo name got right to the point: Demo 2019. Doesn't get much simpler than that. Now they're gaining more confidence and they just want to make sure we know they have génésiaque.

Sedimentum (Canada) - Demo 2019

Castavet. I'm always wary when I hear a band is from Brooklyn or NYC because Krallice, Liturgy, Pyrrhon.... But this Mounds of Ass wasn't terrible, at least they kept the prog nonsense to a minimum. 3 tracks was enough though. I fail to see how this is "black metal" I'd call this post hardcore or something like that, but that's a can of worms I don't really want to open right now so I shall say no more.

I don't know what to call it but I do like it. I had to check my post to see whether it was a typo or you being a dick. You're a dick.

To me it conveys immobility more than heaviness.

No. But I guess they are entitled.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
