Had to stop what I was doing and watch this video as soon as I saw it because I fucking love Bitchwax!

Did not see that coming, but right on I love em' too. Definitely in the top tier of the original stoner/desert metal groups from back in the day.

Didn't see it coming?? So what, you think you know me now? You think I'm funny?

Goodfellas': Joe Pesci Funny How Scene

Just kidding Hungaloogie!! But yeah man, I've posted at length about The Atomic Bitchwax here before. I realize they're not lo-fi black metal from the depths of hell but yet I'm a huge long time fan of theirs. Got into them years ago through the Ed Mundell - Monster Magnet connection. Monster Magnet was pretty much THE band of the 90's for me, (along with a few other faves like: Overkill, Paradise Lost, Celtic Frost, Motörhead, Sacred Reich, Type O, Social Distortion, Sisters of Mercy, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden...) I'd rank MM as one of my top 25 most listened to bands of all time. So when I found out their guitar player Ed Mundell was in another side band I had to check them out. I've never lumped them in with the stoner/desert scene bands like Kyuss, they're from right here in fucking New Jersey.

He's no longer in either band, in 2011 he formed another band The Ultra Electric Mega Galactic and nowadays it seems he's just a studio musician whoring himself out in LA. But the current 2022 Bitchwax lineup boasts 2 current and one former Monster Magnet members so the MM/TAB connection remains strong. It just so happens that I had myself a little MM marathon the last two days playing most of their 11 albums in succession (it had been awhile) so when Marko posted that TAB live set last night I jumped right on that shit. Now today is looking like it will probably be a Sunday TAB marathon. And coffee. And Uno, the kid is already bugging me to play Uno with him. Been trying to teach him to shuffle the cards but I can barely shuffle that huge deck myself so it's pretty funny to watch.

RAW BREED - Suffering Fetish

....this is not very much like THE ATOMIC BITCHWAX.....and does not contain former members of MONSTER MAGNET....

Yet somehow it still manages to be pretty fucking killer though.

Never heard of this Denver band before but even with just 13 minutes of studio stuff and 14 minutes of live stuff this discography compilation is totally worth $7. Wish I could hang around put my feet up and listen to the whole thing, but I think I have to get ready to go to a Father's Day BBQ in a bit here. Shit I didn't even realize it was 4:20, they're probably already wondering where the fuck we are.

Some Aussie forums are very patriotic and that patriotism extends to music. D666, Ne Obliviscaris and Be'lakor have very loyal fans here and in some circles it is very frowned upon to be a local and not like them and not support them. Ne O did however loose quite a bit of their fan base back in about 06 when they started a GoFundMe campaign titled "help us retire from work and tour the world" (or something close to that). It upset many loyal fans, not sure how many of those people went back to the band after their rage eased but it didn't go down well at the time.

Ne Obliviscaris and Be'lakor are total and utterly irredeemable boring crap regardless of where they're from.

Destroyer 666 - I don't mind some of their early stuff but it's not essential IMO.  I love Wildfire which is more speed metal.

Was in a very mainstream mood last night:

Cave In - Heavy Pendulum

Lamb of God - Resolution

System of a Down - System of a Down

Vision of Disorder - Imprint

Aara - Triade II - Hemera, Switzerland. It's nighttime here now so I'm back on the black metal. This one utterly detroys and is shaping up to be one of my favorites this year, thinking top 5 maybe. Vocals matter a lot for me in black metal (not the lyrics mind you, just the vocal timbre) and these throat shredders are just about as good as it gets for me. Need to look into the back catalogue.

Hell Machine - Relentless Aggression

(See GG I do listen to black stuff :P Although TBF they are self proclaimed blackened thrash, if might not be black enough for some!)

I would call this thrash metal Kuke, not sure why you'd think it's black metal. As black/thrash goes (and I do listen to a lot of black/thrash) this is ever so slightly blackened, which is to say the blackening is barely noticable. Not that I don't like it because I do, I like it just fine this is good shit. But it's not black metal.

But if you like to think it is well then that's fine, you go for it. At the end of the day it don't really matter to me one way or the other as long as you're digging it with your non habit forming coffee that's all that matters, I'm not gonna be the dickhead that comes and pisses in your Wheatbix.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
