What Are You Listening To?

Guess I'll start by stipulating to the fact that obviously these things are all completely subjective and we all have our personal favorite sub-genres and bands and scenes and what have you. But still, as a black metal fanatic I feel compelled to point out that if you're specifically talking about black metal (and I believe that you are) there are still more good bands eminating from Scandinavia (please note I'm including Finland in this, which while not technically speaking part of Scandinavia, I think for most Americans it's close enough) than anywhere else. True there are also plenty of other quality black metal bands coming out of not just Eastern Europe but all nooks and crannies of Europe, as well as North & South America, and even Asia &Australasia contribute. But Scandinavia and Northern Europe remains unquestionably the epicenter of 2nd wave based black metal and I don't think this is likely to change anytime soon. The Scandinavian 2nd wave black metal scene might have waned just a little for a few years 20 years ago back in the late 90's (even this is debatable) but at this point in 2021 I'd say we have already had two more generations of 2nd wave inspired bands crop up since the Norwegian originators laid down their templates 30 years ago. And so many of the new generations of bands are really good, there's dozens upon dozens of them to be dicovered. You have posted in very specific detail over and over and over again these last two weeks since you've arrived in thread after thread which bands you like and which bands you know of and which ones you don't. Clearly you have only just barely scratched the surface of all the amazing black metal that's out there to be found and enjoyed. The new millennium has been an embarrassment of riches as far as black metal goes. Maybe you should read through some of these old threads you like to dig up and find out what you've been missing. Just a thought. I would never dream of telling you or anyone what they can and can't or what they should or shouldn't listen to. You can listen to whatever you like.

You said you didn't know of any black/death bands so here's a couple for you. Black/death is the best sub-genre going when it's done well. Problem is most of the bands lean more death metal than black. Somehow when bands mix black and death but lean more toward the black end of the spectrum most people tend to just classify them as black metal.

NP: Huoripukki - Ikuinen Kamppailu

Archgoat - The Luciferian Crown

WORM - Foreverglade. I enjoyed this but at first listen it was a bit static.

Later, SULPHUROUS - The Black Mouth of Sepulchre. Quite lively.

Right now, ARDE - Ancestral Cult. Yep, this is the shit.

Doc you say static like it's a bad thing. I'd put it in the plus column.

Arde is indeed very good, listened to it last night or maybe the night before and I was enjoying it very much.

Haven't heard the Sulphurous yet, I hate the word sepulchre so it has that to overcome right out of the gate. Interested to see what you mean by lively though.

Thanks for weighing in!

That Worm album rules hard! It'll be on my AOTY list. I thought that Sulphurous album was..... just okay. Not a damn thing wrong with it, just nothing particularly interesting about it either. They're about as middle-of-the-road as death metal gets these days.

NP: Nyctophilia - Bezdeń

'Lively' is my way of damning with faint praise. I felt the same as you - nothing wrong with it, nothing outstanding.😉

The Worm album has better cover art...

Häxkapell - Eldhymner, Sweden, I don't generally dabble in too much folky black metal, Iusually click away after about 30 seconds but this one was actually pretty good, I made it to the end. In the end I probably won't be buying it but anyone who enjoys the more folky end of black metal might dig this.

Ofstingan - Sacrilegious Offerings EP USBM, this is more my speed

Ancient Obscurity - Nimettömät Maat, Finland, debut full length, now we're talkin'

No one is owning up to listening to it, so I will - ARCHSPIRE - Bleed The Future . Listened while running this morning and it fit the bill nicely.

Techdeath is not my thing, but I make an exception with these guys. This is not high art but it is a lot of fun. I am wearing my StayTech socks today in celebration.

I've  been seeing other people talk about it on non-music related forums and I gave the song they released before the album a go and saw nothing fascinating about it.

Do the socks make a difference to the music? Maybe they do since I'm wearing Kmart socks and didn't get into Archspire.

Megadeth - Youthanasia

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
