Boat = Bust Out Another Thousand

Shit weather this morning. Finished up my punk playlist from yesterday and slid right into some mood music.

Bad Brains - s/t

Aoratos - Gods Without Name

Darkspace - Darkspace III

Carving a jock o' lantern is the only acceptable use of that filthy cultivar, except maybe launching them from those ridiculous cannons.

You know I luv me an epic Whitenoise Goatfurmaster post. One of the best and worst thing about my WW excursions (that's whitewater not whitenoise people) is the 6-7 hour drive. I hate it because, 6 hours on the road kinda sucks, but it gives me 6 hours of metal listening without interruptions.

Topic 1-Pumpkin ale, beer and whatnot-sorta nasty but for some odd reason, I usually grab  a 6 once during the season

Topic 2-I too have about an acre. There are so many leaves, I pretty much have to remove them or it would be nothing but leaves in the yard.

Topic 3-cold weather camping-I'm a miserable bastard in the cold. Back when I started kayaking and camping for trips, I bought a a boojie North Face Cat's Meow sleeping bag rated to 20 degrees (F) and true to form I wasn't cold at all last weekend-only in the 40's.

Topic 4-my new Ferrari boat has little maintenance-it's a high performance WW kayak-about $1400 new which is pricy enough and  I grabbed it for about a grand....the only engine required is the human variety powered by arms and paddle and maintenance might involve some outfitting, moving the seat, a minor upgrade like a more aggressive thigh brace or something. But it's basically about beating the shit out of plastic in pushy water, having fun and trying to not get a beat down in a hole or getting flipped in a rapid with gnarly consequences. I'm fairly risk averse, so I'm pretty cautious when it comes to doing things that might land me in the hospital or generally getting the snot kicked out of me.

Fantastic choice!  Man I love those guys!  I would say "The Call" still remains my favorite album from them, but "Hidden Evolution and the self-titled release aren't far behind.  It could probably change on any given day.  I have all of their albums, and I never skip a single song.  Rock on!!

A fishing kayak is the only boat I'll ever own. I will allow no overgrown squash in my watercraft even for bait. I wouldn't want any fish that would eat that nasty garbage.

One last for today. From the impeccable discog of one of Finland's finest and my personal favorite from that frosty utopia.

Yeah I tend to agree with that, although their third album wasn't great.

3rd album was a turd.

Sabbat were fantastic. History of a Time to Come had a big impact on me.

Ironically, I never heard Dreamweaver and the much maligned Mourning Has Broken until quite recently.

Dreamweaver is good but as @Dead1 said there is a tendency for Martin Walkyier to just spit out lyrics as a dense fog which is a bit overwhelming at times. Mourning Has Broken was ill conceived. Some of the music is decent. I even thought the new vocalist was ok; he had a Russ Anderson/Forbidden vibe, but by the end of the album I had to admit....yeah, it's not great.

However, History of a Time to Come is classic. I heard the track "Hosannah in Excelsis" on a student radio metal show the same day I heard Carcass and Fear Factory (Martyr) for the first time. I recorded the show on a C-90. Holy shit, that day changed my life.

Dreamweaver has some of the most dreadful production of any album I care to own.  I find it unlistenable to be honest.

Yeah, History of a Time to Come is magnificent. I heard it down the beach on Christmas holidays and it blew me away.

Dee Snider - "For the Love of Metal" (album)

This gentleman has returned to the metal scene with a bang in recent years.  This release from 2018, along with the newest release "Leave a Scar" (2021), is just killer.  Heavy riffs and some great solo work.

Saw him in concert here in Melbourne maybe 2019. Put on a killer show.  With the Toxic Holocaust guys as his backing band how could you go wrong?.

Oh man that's awesome!  He's always been a favorite vocalist of mine.  "Under the Blade" by Twisted Sister captivated me when I first heard it.  And I always take satisfaction knowing he out-classed Congress during all that mess back in the 80's when a bunch of whiny parents and politicians were making a huge fuss over rock/metal.

Great choice!  One of my favorite metal albums ever.  The title track, "Knock 'Em Dead Kid", "Looks That Kill" are all killers, although the entire album is great.

Its in my Top 5 albums of all time. All killer no filler as they say. Red Hot, Knock 'em Dead Kid, Looks that Kill, TYTFIL...10/10

GLOOSH - Sylvan Coven

Huh! That guy follows me on IG. I never realised he had a band. This was good stuff!

I've been listening the shit out of the new Archspire singles. I have no idea how anyone can write that fast, technical, dizzying music and still be so damn catchy and memorble. Incredible.

Archspire - Drone corpse aviator

Other than that I think LLNN's new album will end up on my top 10 this year. They are kind of in that sweetspot between Godflesh, old Neurosis, Swe-death and Author & Punisher.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
