You'll never get to them all Marky Mark, you're gonna have to prioritize! Nice to see you pop in and say hello in between your Appalachian kayak adventures. Hope you're having a nice relaxing summer. One day before I die I'm gonna learn how to do that thing where you roll underneath the water 360° and come upright on the other side. We'll be going camping up in Maine in a few weeks, being old men with a little kid in tow we just use the campground's kayaks and paddle around the very slow moving river. But those aren't the right kind of kayaks to do barrel rolls in anyway.

No shit man, but note to self to listen more to posted shit.

The kayak roll for old men- I was about 40 when I started-needs some instruction-but can be learned by most-took me the better part part of a summer in a structed class format-some learn it in a few lessons-but need some hands on instruction. A lot of middle aged dudes have weight and flexibility issues-but there are solutions to every problem.  I'll say in my mid 50's my paddling has ever been stronger-empty nest has it's advantages.

I need to listen to this again.  I was really unimpressed with it when I heard it last, as, from what I can remember, there was not very many dynamics?  There was just a new reissue, I think, so maybe someone will post it online again.

Yes, dynamics are hardly there, but it still rips for what it is. You can find it on hammerstorm.org

ROKY ERICKSON AND BLEIB ALIEN

.....used to have this version on 7" or 12" single but it got misplaced over time.....nice to hear this version again....

This tune was cool so I did a little Googling and it's all starting to make sense. The late Roky Erickson was the driving force behind the famous 13th Floor Elevators from Texas that I've never actually heard. They put out 3 albums in the late 60's then Roky went on to have a long solo career. Pioneer of psychedelic and garage rock. I'll have to look into this a bit. I genrally like things that get the garage rock tag.

....WhiteNoise.....glad to see you're interested in ROKY.....much like THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, both ROKY and THE 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS were severely underappreciated but the peeps who did appreciate them either formed bands themselves or kept the flag flying for those bands until the rest of the world finally caught up and realized just how great they were....

...I really like 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS a lot but ROKY ERICKSON is one of my favourite artists ever...right up there with BOWIE, COLTRANE, JAMES BROWN and IGGY for me....

EPIPHANIC TRUTH - Dark Triad: Psalms to a Sordid Species

On my run this morning.  Thatguy approved degree of musical interest but many of the Goats would appreciate this.  Massive drumming and a stunning vocal performance.  Either there are multiple vocalists or it's one incredibly versatile guy.

Checking out some new releases tonight. Also been checking the radar constantly to see what time the worst thunderstorms are gonna hit me. Been lucky this evening there have been strong thunderstorms for a few hours just to the north of us and just to the south of us but we've been unscathed as of yet. Been raining lightly now for the last 15 minutes but we're gonna have a break in a sec til the big heavy duty shit reaches us a little before midnight. So I have about another hour. Guess I'd better post this before our power goes out again like it did the last couple of nights when the heavy storms start knocking trees down and taking out the power lines. I wouldn't even mind the midnight rain so much if I didn't have to go upstairs and empty buckets out the window by flashlight. Should have the new roof on and sheeted by next weekend so I can finally see some light at the end of my tunnel.

Crescent - Carving the Fires of Akhet, Egyptian blackened death

Gnosis - Omens from the Dead Realm, black/death from Miami FLA, good but not gnarly/filthy enough.

Ophidian Malice - Disgusting Ritual, Russian black/death

Codex Nero - The Great Harvest of Death, Polish black/death

Rotten Age - Oblicze Zła, Polish black metal

Amalekim - HVHI,  Polish black metal

Éphémère - Dernière Saison, French depressive black metal

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
