Navy, you might like the Ad Nauseam album, they're not chaos for its own sake in the way that Portal is and they don't get all hipster spazzy like some of the NYC bands. If you enjoy later Gorguts you just might maaaaybe find something of value in there.

Alright, I'll give it a shot. But, at the first sign of hipster noisey intellectual colon exploring fuckery, they get the hook.

And now for something else...FINLAND-land of a thousand lakes and a lot of forking great extreme metal and, uh, one major classical composer of note-Sibelius (1865-1957)-as I make my way though the major composers-i come to a name I've long heard but have never actually listened to.....getting dangerously close to my lifetime...but this is no post modernism.

Sibelius/Complete Symphonies and Tone Poems/Boston Symphony Orchestra/Sir Colin Davis-seems to be a well respected cycle....a bit like Brahms looking backwards to the classical era....pretty good after 4 discs.

Panopticon/And Again Into the Light-Strong moments with his juxtaposing styles, but it wears out its welcome....dude needs an editor, I'm staring to fade pretty hard. I think I like his non metal side more than his metal....it's just way too long.

Maybe some kind of "music knowledge" would be helpful in making some of this stuff feel more relevant to you

Never mind, I'm surrounded by Philistines :D

There's this guy...that goes by 'Thatguy'...He has been telling us this for years. Could it be true??

If you're into Debussy and you like solo piano, I highly recommend Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's recordings of his Preludes and Images. A pianist friend also recommended the Gieseking recordings of the same material but the Michelangeli versions have some serious atmosphere. I've also been totally hooked on Schoenberg's "Verklärte Nacht". Prog before prog. Really inspiring.

Thanks for the rec. I found a good price on Amazon....listening right now...beautiful piano music

Love Sibelius.

Really digging these guys today. Remind me of Circle of Ouroboros in that they successfully combine that post-punk vibe with black metal.

Spear of Teuta

Also liking this EP. Sorry can't find it on YT but it is available on bandcamp

It occurs to me a lot Finnish metal uses Finnish mythology as subject matter and so did Sibelius-there's my official metal tie-in.

Ifrinn - Caledonian Black Magick

Have their 2016 demo and I thought I remembered them being from Ireland but turns out they are in fact Scottish black metal. I'm enjoying this one more than I should be. Only 3 tracks but they're all over 8 minutes. Several different listings on BC I had the choice of paying 6 Euros or £5 GBP, the Euro conversion worked out 27 cents cheaper. Goes on the list for consideration in January.

Ancient Wisdom - A Celebration in Honor of Death

I believe it was Johan#1 who mentioned this one man Swede band either late last night or this morning. Last album was indeed 2004 but I'm not familiar with any of his older stuff. This is not bad but the pace is very slow. Not funeral doom slow but pretty damn slow for black metal. There are some keys here and some choral vox which I'm not minding but the whole thing lacks aggression. Would be nice to see a little more killer instinct, a little more oomph. I'm enjoying the test drive well enough but halfway through I don't think I'm gonna be driving this one off the lot.

Hahaha yes!! Johnny 5 is the nickname I have assigned to you in my head. Please understand that my buddy Johan from Sweden is already Johan to me and no matter what he chages his username to be it Sheol or Shamrock or Shitforbrains after 5 years he will always be Johan to me. So since I can't call you both Johan here on the board I have taken the liberty of Americanising your name from Johan to Johnny. And the 5 is just me making the V into Roman numeral V that represents 5. Because you see there was a silly movie from the 1986 called Short Circuit that featured a robot named Johnny 5. Don't be confused or offended, I give everyone nicknames it's what I do. It means you've been accepted into the gang.

Lol! Thanks for the explanation. I sincerely thought you had someone else in mind.... Now what you said makes total sense. I am not easily offended so none taken here. I like what you did.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
