For real. Talking with those folks is maddening. It's funny how "don't believe everything you hear" has become the mantra of people who buy vitamins from a nut job talk show host.

Doom playlist for painting today:

Krief De Soli - Procul Este, Profani

Cavernlight - As We Cup Our Hands And Drink From The Stream Of Our Ache ... @Balor, if you're in a doomy mood, this might appeal to you.

Evoken - Antithesis Of Light

My Dying Bride - As The Flower Withers

Thanks for the recommendation!

"In Solitary Ruin" - Evoken

"Lay Your Woes Upon the Ground and Know that the End Will Soon Swallow You" - Cavernlight

"Constructing a Spire to Pierce and Poison the Infinite" - Cavernlight

"Wander, Part II" - Cavernlight  After listening to a few tracks, I must say that this band is awesome.  Great drones and atmosphere.  Thanks @FatherAlabaster!

I didn't get that impression from The Inexorable, but I did from Exterminate. That might be the best black/death metal album of all time.

I think we can all agree wholeheartedly Angelcorpse has some nasty riffs though

Sexy playlist. Let me know how Krief de Soli and Antithesis of Light treat you.

Both very good. I liked the moody and sort of "open" feeling of the Krief De Soli album, the softer passages worked well. "Antithesis Of Light" was excellent - gripping, crushing, exactly what I want from this kind of music. The blasting sections caught me off guard in a good way.

Better not be planning a trip to Canada, you're on record saying you like Allegaeon better than Rush. You might have some trouble at the border.

Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun
@Requiem, have you ever heard this? Seems like it would be right up your alley. These guys are the Swedish melodic black metal elite, I think they're even better than Dissection et all.

I certainly have. I bought it last year based on your recommendation I think. At any rate, I love it and everything about it. Strange that I didn’t get to it earlier.

Running Wild - Port Royal

NP: Voidcraeft - Entire Discography

This is definetely the discovery of the year for me. Voidcraeft is a very intriguing solo experimental black metal project from Germany which seem to follow a similar path to Jute Gyte... altough they seem to be influnced by DsO to a certain extent too (You might want to take a look at his bandcamp). @FatherAlabaster

I think you could like this

Thanks for reminding me, I've been meaning to get around to Voidcraeft. I got one of their (his?) albums on Bandcamp after hearing and enjoying a snippet a while back, but then this whole power metal appreciation thing happened and I forgot to go back to it.

Lots of void-ish things happening lately, huh? We've got Voidcraeft, Voidthrone, Deliverance From The Godless Void, Perverse Offerings To The Void, Void Masquerading As Matter, albums coming out on I, Voidhanger... I wonder if there's anything to this whole void thing.

I, Voidhanger is an italian label which mainly promotes (as far as I know) trippy death/black metal, like Tchornobog. That "void" thing is one of the most reccurent aesthetics I've ever seen, you are right about that. I guess this sudden burst of Lovecraftian worship exploded thanks to Portal...bands that deal with abstract/occult imaginary love to throw around words which suit their musical themes

To be honest, I'm not sure of its origin. I don't even have a real copy of it, mine is a burned disc that Mike (NTNR that used to frequent this place) made for me. He's a Paradise Lost nut, the kind that buys 3 copies of their albums to have all of the bonus tracks.

Anyway, it's one full live set from a gig (in Stockholm, maybe?) from their Draconian Times tour, and another partial set from the same tour. It's pretty cool for me because the full set showcases the songs with a seriously boosted guitar tone, and sounds way heavier than the album versions of the songs. The vocals are buried in the mix, and Nick doesn't sound great from what you can hear, but it's worth it for that crunch. It's like the difference between Priest's studio albums and Unleashed in the East. The rest of the band is on fire, playing most of Draconian Times with Pity the Sadness, True Belief, and As I Die. It's a pretty cool bootleg if you can find it.

It's funny to watch buzzwords proliferate, huh? I wonder what word will be next. I'm not deeply familiar with I, Voidhanger's catalog, but I have a couple of their releases. I liked the Tchornobog album when I heard it, but it's another that I haven't gone back to - did you like it?

NP:
Reclusiam - s/t
Mournful Congregation - Concrescence Of The Sophia
Worship - Last Youtube Stream Before Doomsday

I need to dust off that Reclusiam album, it's been a while since I've listened to it. Ryan does have a free download of it available on his website if you'd rather not stream it on YouTube.

That Tchornobog ended up in my top 10 list of 2017. I liked how each song followed a great narrative structure and how overwhelming was the dissonant riffage

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
