Motley Crue final shows videos.

I actually prefer watching bootlegs rather than the preposterously choppy and edited official DVD of 'The End'. You can't get any sense of the show on official releases. I hate this mentality of flashing images: a fraction of a second of the stage, cut to the crowd, cut to a long shot, cut to someone's phone. It's too much.

At least the bootlegs show the band, for better or worse, standing there on stage and playing. That's what rock n roll is about.

Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale

The CD arrived in the mail yesterday, finally. What an album. The lyrics are great; just incredible that Aleah had a voice like that and also that poetic ability. The whole professionalism of this album is truly testament to her, well, genius I guess. Jens Bogren production and mix. Sounds a million times better on CD than youtube by the way...

Here's the line-up:

Aleah Starbridge

Juha Raivio (Swallow the Sun)

Fredrik Norrman (ex Katatonia/October Tide)

Mattias Norrman (ex Katatonia/October Tide)

Kai Hahto (ex Swallow the Sun/Wintersun/Nightwish)

Guest vocals: Mick Moss (Antimatter), Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost/Bloodbath)

Anathema - 'The Optimist'.

Or should I say Ana_thema as they are now mysteriously known. Far out what's happening to this band? I actually held this album in my hands earlier today in a music store, looked at it, and put it straight back. This would be unthinkable back in the day, but this band has really lost me.

The concept here is a sequel to 'A Fine Day to Exit', which is a pretty cool album. But the thing is, that album is about a guy who either kills himself by swimming off into the ocean, or fakes his death and escapes. On 'The Optimist' he gets back in his car and drives off and, amazingly, turns a radio dial through a series of stations (cliche). And I guess he's going to find a happy life now, because the goddamn Cavanagh brothers are all lovey-dovey these days.

I guess I'm happy for the band. They're really popular these days and they're obviously enjoying what they're doing, but I'm done with them. 'Distant Satellites' is unlistenable and this is only a little bit better.

Farewell. Anathema, if you need me I'll still be with you, only 1992-2010 you (minus 'A Natural Disaster' which is total pants).

The title track is now on. Listen to this corny shit. It's ridiculous.

Saor - 'Guardians'

Scottish black metal that brings a right tear to the eye. The Requiem clan are actually descended from a tiny village called Lochore in the Kingdom of Fife, which I had the privilege to visit a few years ago.

Proudly we wore the tartan. Willingly we ran into battle. Thirstily we drank all the beer.

I tried up through Judgement. No, to be fair, I tried up through A Fine Day To Exit. But to my ears, they lost it after The Silent Enigma. I can't even imagine a goopy "posi" version of the sappy, overwrought tripe they were turning out around 2000.

Right now I'm listening to my air conditioner, the intermittent chatter of my son, and the glacially slow progress of wax through the obscure and torturous caverns of my right inner ear.

I'd rather listen to the travails of your ear wax than the new Anathema album.

I can understand your post completely. And it's 'Judgement' that is the first chink in the armour for me because I'm such a Duncan Patterson fan. I was really lucky to meet him while I was recording my second album, and he told me a heap of amazing stories about Anathema. He was drinking cider the whole time. It was amazing.

You really need to hear 'We're Here Because We're Here' as it's a great emotional album. But 'Alternative 4' is their last 10/10 album (in 1998)!

Finally dragged My Dying Bride - 'The Vaulted Shadows' out again.

i think I have to face facts. If bringing out an MDB release and putting it on the stereo is tantamount to going to the dentist, then I think we need to part ways.

My Dying Bride, I love you, but this is just bollocks.

You idiots. It's not just about playing slow. You have to feel something yourselves. Because we're not just going to feel random notes. Why would anyone sit through this? it's terrible.

And once 'The Manuscript' kicks in we have that quality. The emotion is there! Anyway. What a dumb ass band these days.

Eternity and Alternative 4 both made their way out of my collection and back to the counter of the local record store. I don't remember if I got cash or trade for them... Either way I haven't listened to those albums in so long I can barely recall them. I'm certainly willing to revisit them, but based on my dim memories, it's likely a lost cause.

When are you going to share your music with us?

NP: Fen - Winter

i can assure you I read that post with a wide open mouth! 'Eternity' and 'Alternative 4' are two of my all time favourite albums. They are works of true suicidal beauty. Please go back to them and look upon them kindly!

I'm with you. I owned Alternative 4 for a while, and ended up trading it in after a few spins. A Fine Day to Exit is the only other album from after their doom period that I've heard, and it did nothing for me. They really lost their way quickly IMO, especially after making such groundbreaking music early on.

So much lol.

Anyway, I'm currently listening to:

Sentenced - 'The Luxury of a Grave'.

The question here is, why are you going for the stopgap releases? I know we have different taste in MDB, but for whatever it's worth, I enjoy A Map... and Feel The Misery both quite a bit, despite the awkward bits and miscues that I've come to expect from them. There are some real clunkers in their discography, but I respect how they've been able to go way out into left field and then return to their classic sound in a genuine way.

I pulled it off the rack specifically to give it some more air time because I've really ignored this, and to see if I liked it more than I remember. And there are just no riffs. Where are the emotional gut-twisters that shoot the hairs up on your neck and give you the courage to ask the hot girl out? They're not there.

Not being into boring alternative rock incites "lolz"? Suit yourself.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
