I need to hear more Crowbar. They fascinate me and have awesome titles. Don't think I've heard anything since 'Planets Collide'. Any suggestions? I like doom, groove and catchiness if that helps.

The new one (The Serpent Only Lies) is pretty good, a worthy successor to Symmetry in Black. Todd 'Sexy T' back on bass after 16 years. Sever the Wicked Hand (2010 or 2011) a good recommendation too...

Urgehal- "Atomkinder"

Tsjuder- "Desert Northern Hell"

Ragnarok- "Nattferd"

Endezzma- "Erotik Nekrosis"

Kampfar- "Mello Skogkledde Aaser"

1349- "Liberation"

Svarttjern- "Misanthropic Path of Madness"

Koldbrann- "Nekrotisk Inkvisition"

Khold- "Masterpiss of Pain"

This must be making quite a cacophony.

There's an Iron Maiden song playing in this pub but I don't recognise it, so it can't be from the latest album or any of their old good albums.

Ghost Brigade - 'In the Woods'.

I have two albums by these guys and just don't feel the heart stab that I know I'm supposed to except for this track, the first song from 'Until Fear No Longer Defines Us', which is amazing. And sounds nothing like their other tracks hahaha.

Insomnium - Wnter's Gate (on youtube)

This is amazing. I don't know why I've not just bought this, as I own all the Insomnium albums and love them all. I have no idea what I was thinking, but this is the first time I've heard it and it's... incredible. It could even be their best, and this is just from one listen.

If you like emotional music, get around it. This is way better than their last two albums.

Yeah! The new album is great...Plasmic and Pure is a killer! Sonic Excess in its Purest Form is also a great album IMO.

Tiamat - Wildhoney  ...It's been so long since I listened to this. Surprised by how much of it I remember, since it was never a favorite of mine. My son has been on a Despicable Me and Minions kick for a while, and when I hear Johan Edlund's accent, I can't help imagining Gru singing these songs - "the spiders, snakes, and the leetle mice..." Yeah, maybe I should go back to sleep.

Thanks for the awesome feedback, but between the two of you, you've named five Crowbar albums (I think). This hardly narrows it down, lads. Am I to assume that most of their albums are really good and just go with the coolest sounding album title? Neither of you mentioned anything at all about the actual music on these albums. You've done a "Favourite Cars Thread" and just named names.

Like, are any of these albums more or less doomy and therefore might appeal to my personal tastes more? Are the vocals clearer and stronger on any of these albums? Are some better produced than others? I mean, really, chaps, this is jolly well too much.

You're really gonna make me work for my money huh? The Crowbar formula doesn't change much- and while I'll admit I'm not really familiar with all of their catalogue, I'd take the recent release as a good place to start.

Absolutely crushing production (up a level from the previous release Symmetry in Black). Doomy but with some melodic flourishes thrown in which weren't present before. Riffs galore and Kirk sounding like he's in some serious pain throughout.....

@RequiemPlasmic and Pure is a song on the new album (just mentioned it as the best of it IMO). "Sonic Excess in its Purest Form" is 1 album title, "Severe the Wicked Hand" another album :P

I also admit I don't know Crowbar much, only getting to know them better recently. For such bands I usually mostly listen to the songs I like the most, from various albums: "Planets Collide", "Glass Full of Liquid Pain", "Plasmic and Pure", "Walk With Knowledge Wisely", "Amaranthine", "Like Broken Glass", etc

Check out the song "Departures" from IV: One With The Storm. Magic.

Listening to two songs from Pillorian's debut. For those Agalloch fans this is John Haugham's new band since they disbanded. Similarities to the aforementioned group but a little more aggressive on first listen. Yep, Im liking it.

Also went through new Agatus album "The Eternalist" (actually late 2016 release I think?). First album in 14 years and damn talk about a total change in direction. Out with the black metal of the first two albums and in with the NWOBHM. Its actually very cool but the weakfish vocals are now a little exposed....

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
