What Are You Listening To?

Thanks! The vocalist is pretty badass if from IL. The drummer on the EP was the mentor of the drummer on the album. (Ironically the protege was WAY better too but is MIA and presumed dead.) NP: Lethian Dreams - Bleak Silver Streams Mental Torment - On the Verge...
The drummer on the album wasn't Dave was it? Speaking of which Doesn't Dave have a new project he's working on or something? I see updates on his facebook page every now and then. NP: Immortal - Withstand The Fall Of Time Probably my favourite track from the album right here.

No he wasn't. A guy named Nate Correll was the session drummer and he was amazing. As far as Dave goes I've no idea nor do I care. NP: Mental Torment - On the Verge...

I really hate when you can work for a whole chunk of time with someone and then just have them drop out of your life like that. It makes the whole thing seem more shallow. I've tried to stay friends with people even if we wind up not playing music together, but it doesn't always work. currently: Necronoclast - Degeneration I get the Katatonia references with this music. It's ok, a little boring and the vocals get pretty silly sometimes.

Re: What Are You Listening To?

Diabolique - The Black Flower sappy goth rock shit from the famed Necrolord... Heh. It's crap, but I love it. Satan59, you might like this album too.
Their first album is pretty good gothic metal, definitely heavier than most others in the field. I haven't heard anything after that though. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Dead Congregation - Graves Of The Archangels. I'm really liking this album a lot. Dark, nasty, kind of angry, not trying to be anything it isn't...
I just have the Purifying Consecrated Ground EP, and it's pretty sick, definitely some of the best modern death metal I've heard. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

The Black Flower is fuzzy, droney, reverb and vibrato laden goth rock with low-pitched, almost mumbled clean vocals, very dark-sounding. Imagine a cross between Discouraged Ones and Joy Division's "Closer", though it's not as good as either IMO - the songwriting borders on pop. But I got into it when I was a teenager and the melodies still get stuck in my head. The one that came out after this was pure garbage.

I guess that's a fair description of the vocals on this album, too. Yeah, I don't recall that album; is it the one with the blue and purple drawing of a girl's face on the cover? Been so long...

Nevertanezra - NTNR finally got the CD to work in my other computer this one is really good, guys. I like the dry, almost fuzzy guitar sound. Really nice recording quality, clear, no bullshit. The songs are better than the EP. Good progression. Too bad you can't just hire this drummer for more material. Looking forward to hearing BAN's vocals on upcoming stuff.

So far, I haven't been able to get as low as Rick has in a few places, but I'm working on it. I also plan to have a bit more varied approach, as I did when performing live. The new stuff is coming together nicely, slower and heavier, but with more uptempo/death metal sections, and a much weirder atmosphere. Glad you liked the album though. Sounds good, I could see the death metal elements in your sound getting expanded on and having more prominence. The atmosphere of the album was much more cohesive - the EP had some good melodies on it, but it felt more like a collection of parts (I know you weren't on the EP... just saying). Only problem with having more death metal parts is, you need a better drummer to pull them off! And good death metal drummers often don't have the "feel" for doom, doom drumming needs to leave space. I dunno. Anyway I'll be spinning NTNR a good bit, in conjunction with Dead Congregation, which I can't stop listening to right now. And seriously looking forward to hearing your new stuff, it sounds promising.

I'm glad you like it. A lot of work went into that and while it's not traditionally as varied as the EP I feel it's very experimental for what it is. We're continuing that vibe btw. Most people, mostly from doomantia.com, seem to prefer the EP to the album given the variety but you are right it was more like a collection/comp of material. If I had, had more money I'd probably have put a fourth song on there. As it stands I did alter the last song quite a bit, tempo-wise, to make it fit the doom mold (originally it was much faster). You'll be pleasantly surprised when you hear ban's vocals. He's very good and incredibly powerful. He's sung without a mic on several occasion and I've heard him perfectly when playing a pretty high volumes. He doesn't go as low as Rick but he does have a better all around range than Rick. Had things turned out differently they'd have sung in tandem in Denver last year. Had things gone another way entirely Rick would still be with us and both would be singing. I can't wait for our next release. The questions that now remain are if it will be a single and/or split (possibly with Avernus) and if we'll be able to release it this year. I've set some goals for us that look like they're not going to be met. Hooray lack of equipment. However, the Black Harvest material is great. I like the 2013 material the best so far. I get what you were going for when you said immediacy. It's very smooth and considering there was no drummer it's even more awesome. Sadly, restless oblivion isn't old enough to appreciate this type of music.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
