Rate the song above you!

Re: Rate the song above you! THAT brings back memories of Scottish dance class...my mother taught it for a good four years. Love the melody and the solos are great too. I've always liked Celtic music. :D Probably about 9/10 for technicality but it ran a bit long for me. Up-and-coming progressive power metal from Germany. k_7GKWxB_iY

Re: Rate the song above you! That was greeeaat. A fantastic opening riff, and parts of it sounded like less esoteric but much more enjoyable Meshuggah. Vocals on this are a lot better than some other LoG songs, so probably about between 8.5 and 9 out of 10. I feel like SUCH an idiot for not having listened to these guys earlier... XKjE_wT5pFA Wonderful music to blast over your car speakers!

Re: Rate the song above you! Pretty cool. I very much liked all the riffs they used but it seemed an incomplete package. I thought the vocals were lacking. The drums were nice enough but I didn't notice them that much. It would have been nice to see more keyboard, but what keys there were in there were good. 8/10. sLpEmOJyzdc Some bluesy prog from New York. Also going to be at ProgPower USA this year.

Re: Rate the song above you! Liked the guitars but the vocals were subpar. Had a battle metal feel rather than folk metal, which is how they're categorized. 7.5/10 Great Ukrainian folk metal. OVkSGPIqtM4 Not very well known at all, they're just coming out with their first album.

Re: Rate the song above you! Love how they both have precisely the same haircut. :P Well...ballads aren't to my taste. The guitar was good, I sure can't change chords cleanly like that, but otherwise it stuck me as bland. 7/10. Boring looking video, but my favorite gothic metal band. oE4iKZVfy7A From their best album so far, Pikki Lihassa.

Re: Rate the song above you! Dark...you made me remember my old fear of being bitten by a lamprey in the toilet bowl every time I was seated on the throne. Opeth's also got a song called Porcelain Heart, right? Is Akerfeldt obsessed with toilets maybe? But man, that was great. 9/10 definitely. Ambience, variety, a pleasant technical solo. None of that felt staged at all. Except the woman who apparently doesn't own any pants. _iEu6rVp1zM Not very well known...probably because they got a new singer after this guy, and the new singer REALLY sucks in comparison.

Re: Rate the song above you! Well, that was OK. The guitars were nice, and the harsh vocals weren't so bad. The drums seemed a bit bland, and I didn't really like the vocals. I didn't like them because they sounded like pretty much every single popular, halfhearted, bland Christian rock band in existence. Trust me, I've had to listen to a bunch. After hearing that same kind of vocal style I just get annoyed. It's not like he couldn't be good, it just seems like he's not willing to put in the effort to be fantastic. So, 7/10. Some French tech death I've been listening to just recently... y2qFrYy2zCI Most people who listen to them really love them.

Re: Rate the song above you! Quite refreshing. The emphasis on melody and ambience was very nice, and it was good to hear a black metal band with a sense of varied rhythm. The female vocals were also really good. So probably 8/10 for yours as well. Been listening to these guys lately. WOtM3ghEE-s It's nice to find some talented Saxon metallers. Besides the great Heidevolk, of course.

Re: Rate the song above you! Probably 7/10. Drums got a tad boring but the rest was nice and groovy. Vocals were good and guitar was nice. One of my favorites from Battlelore...Kaisa Jouhki is a criminally underrated female vocalist. 4MuyKNNt2yo Sota metalli Suomea!

Re: Rate the song above you! Yeah, that was a great video! Oh, wait, let me turn the audio on... Just kidding, but I absolutely love the picture at 0:53. I do pencil drawing so am in awe of that artist's talent. :) Anyhow, the vocals were funny. I liked them, but they were just sort of ridiculously entertaining. The guitars also sounded weird when they came in, drums weren't too bad and the keyboards helped. It's a good thing I was in a doom kind of mood. Probably 8/10. FKTZhFMARJI Some of Jani Stefanovic's better stuff. He's mainly a guitarist but he does everything on this album except the clean vocals.

Re: Rate the song above you! Yes! The intro was great. Absolutely loved it. As soon as the song kicked in I was very reminded of Dark Tranquillity, but when 4:40 rolled around I got treated to some of the best use of (violin? cello? viola?) I've ever heard - it's a Slavic thing to do, I think. Guitars were really nice, drums were great, vocals were good, intro vocal was nice... So, I think a well-deserved 9/10 for the Austrians! More English metal here...I like the song but the video is pretty funny. 9eqGgVHcg9g Quite possibly my favorite doom band.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
