Re: Rate the song above you!

"ARE YOU FUCKING BASHING RANDY BLYTHE ?!?>:(" -apocalypse922 Call it what you want. It's not my style. Voyager's not yours but I didn't launch into ALL CAPS IRE when you gave them 3/5. If I were bashing Randy Blythe I'd certainly have used more vicious language. If we're allowed to incorporate personal tastes into our ratings then I'm perfectly within my rights to do this. If it's of any importance I think they're one of the better well-publicized bands. I like their riffing. The drumming is nice. And most of the time these vocals are good.I just prefer more of a rasp to the vocals. I was confused; I thought you were saying Miseration was insulting Blythe. Anyhow, what d'you think of them?
i was joking :3 everyone has their own preferences.. so :P It was pretty good, 3.5/5

Re: Rate the song above you! Sheesh, you Norwegians have got a dark sense of humor  . Have you got some really freaky black metal video you want to scare me with now? I hope it's Melechesh or Rudra, I'm not much of a fan of European black metal...oh dear, the conflict's going to brew up again...

Hm, real creepy death metal video ? Let me think.. -gt7YWwOmRo The meaning here is dark. and the video is basically creepy. Early dimmu borgir. FUCK YEAH

Re: Rate the song above you! Better than a buttload of the black metal I've heard. I love how they realize that ambiance takes as much talent as tremolo so they don't just spam speed all over the place. Drumming and beat in general is also pretty cool. In addition, I actually LIKE the vocals. So although I'm almost certain I wouldn't like the lyrics, I'd say this is 9/10. So quid pro quo, here's some black metal from the other side of the earth! Re: Rate the song above you! Dark Tranquillity YEAHHH Probably 8.5/10 or better...I think it's the only song from Damage Done that I don't have. As I recall you like HammerFall as well, that's great. Qr-wa9IZvwc Let's have some symphonic power metal from one of my absolute favorite groups!

Re: Rate the song above you! Solos were awesome, great clean sweep picking. I thought they upheld the heavy metal banner very well. I do wish the vocals had been stronger though. About 7/10 or 7.5/10, I think, mainly because speed/traditional metal is not really my style. aokXtA6XCKc A relatively unknown progressive metal band with some harsh vocals from Christian Alvestam. Guitars done by Jani Stefanovic - I think this guy is very underrated.

Re: Rate the song above you! Wow, I only needed to hear two minutes of that and I liked it. Sound quality was a bit fuzzy so the drums probably didn't have the crispness they normally would have, and the same goes for the guitars. It also got a bit monotonous after a while. Aside from that, the intro was good and the song developed well from there. It definitely gave off the feel of a barbarian commander leading to sack of Rome... 7.5/10 _MHXtfJV9a8 Spanish power metal usually sucks, but this band is one amazing exception!

Re: Rate the song above you! I totally agree. I live in New Mexico; we have a LOT of Spanish-speakers here, so I did the Rosetta Stone program. I still don't like the language at all, it just doesn't sound melodic. It sounds fruity. Not that it's really their fault. So now I FINALLY get to put this band on here... 4AJ_qcQVDP0 1:57 for one of the strangest lines I've ever heard.

Re: Rate the song above you! Haha, realized I forgot to post a song... :P But yeah, I understand why you like that band so much. Absolutely loved it! The time-signature changes, complex instrumentation, unexpected composition, mood and atmosphere, and how they too change... Amazing. Very prog. 10/10! SzWqNzAHd5A I intended only to post "Cantermemorabilia", but apparently YouTube only has the entire Canterbury Sequence and not the separate movements. :(

Re: Rate the song above you! :P Goody. Go ahead and check their other material then, I suspect you'd like it. Well, I think it's safe to say I lack the musical education to understand how amazing that piece was. Naturally I had hoped there would be more overdriven guitar, crunch, etc.. It's not really my style. That said, it was music I'd want to hear in a good restaurant. It's not metal, which wouldn't really suit the ambiance, but it develops and changes enough to make it interesting to listen to if the conversation at your table is lacking. I'd say 8/10. WJBBBT9uF4I My favorite American band. Not one of their best songs, but really good nonetheless.

Re: Rate the song above you! Heck yeah, I loved the rhythm in the verses, not a whole lot of death metal bands bother to do that... Let's see, guitars - amazing, bass - amazing, drums - great, vocals - good. Well, I'll give that 8.5/10 since it could have used a bit more melody (fine, I know it's death metal, but still, some more melody would have pulled it together even better). hGPFhAKpp7Y This band wrote my signature.

Re: Rate the song above you! Never before have exploding intestines sounded so noble as they did in that solo... 9/10, I wish the drums had been less thrashy in parts but otherwise everything was great. This one gets a bit monotonous toward the end...but the main riff COMMANDS THEE to headbang. 2j3FcKk1chg

Re: Rate the song above you! Pretty decent, but I agree, it was very monotonous. And in my opinion, it would be much better with some work. Needs more balanced volumes. I didn't much appreciate all the growling, but the enhanced vocals were great. Overall, 6/10. fm7ntyycGbU Probably my personal favourite from DT's Images and Words :D

Re: Rate the song above you! Easy listening goes metal... Admittedly, ballads aren't my style. Given that, the vocal performance was impressive and the drumming was refreshingly interesting for what one would expect to be a slow song. In addition, the solos were very nice (I say solos because I hesitate to name the brass instrument - I think it's a saxophone). So probably 7.5/10. I only recently started listening to these guys again, but I'm actually impressed with how well they progress over their songs. 2ew3nvGhhW4 Lars Larssen. Because Russell Allen can't have all the bombast to himself.

Re: Rate the song above you! For some reason that struck me as anachronistic and old. I very much liked that you could hear the bass in the song. Most metal bands don't really do that. The vocals rather bored me in the chorus but they weren't too bad in the verses. The guitar wasn't too bad and neither were the drums, but for some reason it did not resonate with me much. 7/10 It'll take a while to get through this one, but it will be worth it... 4mo6hy4YMSY Intro riff seems very technical death metal. :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
