Re: Honest yeah battle metal seems like a silly subgenre that people can't really figure out what goes in it or what bands are associated with it

Re: Honest Well, It's kind off an Sub-Sub genre. I agree, they could've put these bands in another category ..

Re: Honest There are not many bands I would credit to only one genre. Power metal and Battle Metal are very similar, but I'd say tempo differentiates.

Re: Honest I definitely agree. Not that there isn't slower-tempo power metal out there like Thy Majestie or good old HammerFall, but I think Sabaton is sufficiently different to count as battle metal - especially since they sing about battle. Battlelore sings about Tolkein's mythology in a much more in-depth fashion than a lot of other bands, and they're generally slow-tempo. I'd say they're the genre's archetype, but then I don't know that much about the genre. But one thing I can tell you: They continue to churn out good material. In addition, they seem pretty enthusiastic on stage. :P If you're not a technicality wingnut, but you want passion and melody, support this band. Goodness knows Kaisa Jouhki deserves far more attention for her vocal style.

Amon Amarth isn't battle metal, nor viking metal. It's melodic death metal. Johan Hegg will give out stink if he hears this lol

I could maybe get behind that near the beginning of their career, but the death metal elements were stripped away as time went on. Their songwriting and melodic style has always been more in line with what viking metal bands like Thyrfing and Mithotyn, it's really only the more superficial characteristics of low vocals and downtuned guitars (which are both inconsequential as far as genres go) that tie them to the death metal scene. Don't get me wrong, I've heard their demos, it's not as though the comparison is totally baseless. I've also heard the demos of many bands who started out as death metal, but became other things, like Green Carnation, Pyogenesis, Arcturus, etc...

I don't consider battle metal to be a genre anyway. No identifying characteristics and all bands in the so-called style could comfortably be placed elsewhere. I have made that point many times now.

Sisa Belial gave this Horns Up!

Haven't we pressed Tait about closing this topic before?

With the impending restructure of MetalForum it's probably not worth bothering with any more but yes I think when this sub-forum was first created we may have said something about it.
