Quo Vadis could probably get back to top of the heap if they issued a new album, but for now it's gotta be Gorod. If First Fragment follows up Dasein with one or two albums that are even remotely as awesome they'll blast right up the rankings too. Same goes for Dawn of Dementia, Deviant Process and Vale of Pnath, and their latest work. As for new bands, I'd say Inanimate Existence has shown the best combination of quality and consistency.

The first Vale Of Pnath album was surprisingly good, but the second one doesn't do anything for me. The guitar parts just aren't there. I dig IE, and I'm finally warming up to newer Gorod - I liked Neurotripsicks back when they were "the French Gorgasm" but the new stuff got to my ears at the wrong time.

All you anti-core guys are gonna roast me for this but my favourite Death Metal band right now has got to be Aversions Crown.  Heavy and Tech, and absolutely fucking brutal.  For the uninitiated:

I hadn't heard them until you posted this. Other than some melodic refrains, it sounded pretty much like I thought it would. Obnoxious vocals, hollow production that only served to highlight the dull chugging guitar lines, and wannabe Behemoth styled drumming that everyone seems to be going for these days. I know Requiem hates it when I comment just to be negative, but I'm legitimately hoping that one of these deathcore bands proves me wrong one day. Based on everything I've heard though, I'm not holding my breath.

I was actually hoping someone would join me in a discussion about this!  As a fan of prog/tech death I think it's crazy someone can listen to this and think all it contains is chugging riffs and obnoxious vocals.  Are you only listening to the rhythm guitar and completely missing the leads?  Also... I think the vocals in this sound a lot fresher than the most of the typical DM I've been listening to for the past while.  But go ahead, convince me!  Show me a comparison song that is just as heavy, but with less obnoxious vocals and less chugging, because I have yet to see someone show me something that surprised me.

I led my comment with "Other than some melodic refrains, it sounded pretty much like I thought it would.", in reference to the melodic leads (not the wanky solos) that broke up the typical deathcore monotony. Those were surprising, but not enough to get past my other gripes with the song. Chugging guitars are everywhere in metal, and they're not a problem unless they're just used as bland placeholders, which can be said for any musical technique. Death metal has always been especially heavy in palm-muted riffs, but the open-note deathcore chugfests that are more rooted in the try-hard "aggression" that they supposedly derive from hardcore/metalcore is tiresome for me. They're essentially not any different than the dreaded modern "breakdown riff" played at higher speed, something that metalcore and deathcore dumbed down to a pale imitation of its former status as a welcome hallmark in death metal. Any "heaviness" it instills feels contrived to me, and no more heavy than any number of other modern or ancient bands playing death metal. And as for the vocals sounding "fresh", it seems like every one of these bands from the last 10 or so years has gone out of their way to incorporate the same obnoxious screech that The Black Dahlia Murder became famous for into a more standard and hollow metalcore influenced growl. Do the leads make a difference? Absolutely, but otherwise, I hear literally nothing to set this band apart from the hordes that spawned them.

I'm a sucker for symphonic/dark melodies so I may well have skimmed guitar for them. That being said I remember thinking it was an improvement in every way.

Nyn is hilarious. You'd absolutely hate them, they're basically Archspire with symphonic elements, but I enjoy them. You can't beat being able to capture a band's sound by humming Phantom of the Opera, making barking noises and blowing the occasional raspberry to imitate the kick drums.

Immolation, Ulcerate,

Two really good examples here of quality bands with their own sound.  Instantly I can recognise Immolation on most of their tracks and Ulcerate although less immediate they truly have that blend of dissonant, technical DM sound trademarked and thoroughly owned.

Possessed, early Death, Entombed, Hellwitch, Massacra (france), Massacre (florida), Master, Necrovore, Devastation, Incubus, Morgoth, Necrophagia (the Phil Anselmo era I really don't know what you would classify it as, maybe black/death), Sadistic Intent, Believer (sanity obscure album), Afflicted (swe), Dark Angel, Solstice, early Pestilence, Morbid Saint, early Vengeance Rising

I'm more into thrash/death, early death metal, the more vicious side of it. A little black/death too.

I think mostly because they each have their own style. When you hear one of those band's music you know what band is playing.

Pat O'brien has the sickest V guitar set ups for one, and Alex Webster is perfection to me with his bass playing. I love 18V pickups and speed ramps. The growl, groove, and speed. My favourite albums by Cannibal Corpse are in this order, Kill 2006... because of The Time To Kill Is Now and Make Them Suffer back to back, 1 and 2, just sets the whole album up perfectly. Then comes Gallery of Suicide... 1998... I Will Kill You and Gallery of Suicide are just phenomenal pieces of musical art. Followed by Butchered At Birth, I feel like that album is a complete masterpiece, from the artwork to being produced by Scott Burns...my favourite song off that album is Covered With Sores and is one of my top 3 Corpse songs. It is so fantastic, it still gives me goosebumbs after all these years. Tomb Of The Muitilated 1992....Entrails Ripped From a Virgin's Cunt and Hammer Smashed Face are the other two of my all time favourite Corpse songs. Follwing that and in this order, Eaten Back To Live 1990, The Bleeding 1994 (track number 3 please), Vile 1996, Bloodthirst 1999, Gore Obsessed 2002, The Wretched Spawn 2004, Evisceration Plaque 2009, Torture 2012, and finally, A Skeletal Domain 2014.

I know what you mean about the first two songs on 'Kill' - it's a great opening to the album.

Nice overview of the albums.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
