Re: Your favorite death metal bands?

Interesting little blog here about why Ripping Corpse didn't get picked up... Their vocalist's "look". Who knew it was always this superficial? Gives me a little less hope. Ugh.
What a fat load of shit. Ripping Corpse were better than most Earache bands, fuck them for worrying about the guy's look. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Unquestionable Presence and Here In After are on my list too' date=' although I was specifically referring to bands that sounded like Gutted. I never liked Morbid Angel. I really tried. Maybe it's time to dig out "Altars" again and see what I think... Incantation is another one I just couldn't dig, I had three of their albums growing up but just kind of meh. Those others, I will have to look up! Thanks.[/quote'] I suppose with Incantation their sound may have something to do with it. The description of them by a guy on another forum probably sums them up best "Incantation is hell as a fetid sewer rather then a boiling pit" I dig that about them.

That's a good quote, hah. It's been such a long time that I'm willing to give them another shot. Still really excited by !T.O.O.H! and the new Gorguts, and I like to give albums a chance to sink in before moving on. But I can't listen to anything for fun right now because of my fucking ear! Aaaaaaghhh... uh. It's really demoralizing.

That was probably their most adventurous album, they took a few chances and ended with an awesome 10+ minute epic. Daniel Corchado does vocals on that one, and he's not as low as Craig Pillard, his vocals might be easier to digest. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

How about Dreaming With the Dead? I forgot to mention that one' date=' but it's one of my favorite USDM albums and one of the finest death/thrash albums ever IMO.[/quote'] yes sir! another great but underrated album. totally forgot about Ripping Corpse i was just about to ask why they never got big. who would have thought? especially in the 90's...

The top tier of early USDM for me goes to Here In After, Mental Funeral, Unquestionable Presence, Bride of Insect, Onward to Golgotha, Stillbirth Machine, Screams of Anguish, Altars of Madness, etc... Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
I went and listened to the Nuclear Death and Order from Chaos stuff on youtube. None of it really ticked any boxes for me, though I'll give these albums another spin anyway. Listening to Incantation now and I don't dislike it like I used to! So that's good... :D Thanks as always for recommendations.

Both were very chaotic, but not in the same way as most of the bands that are usually described that way these days, but I love how original both were. There is some nasty old school black metal and thrash in OFC's sound, and Pete's raw vocals over Chuck's off kilter riffing is awesome to me, and Lori's depraved vocals over the noisy mess of Bride of Insect (and Carrion For Worm) makes quite the awesomely filthy sound. Incantation have never varied their formula much, but that one is one of their more polished and adventurous than their other albums. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

So I just found out this band Vital Remains while listening to some music on youtube and the album I'm listening to(Dechristianize) has Glenn Benton on vocals and it is amazing. I'm really liking this album and the band in general. Was wondering if anyone knew if they any other albums with Glenn on vocals? Or any other bands for that matter?

Glen is just on that one and Icons of Evil. I'm not all that familiar with the band, but I can listen to Dechristianize for a song or two and enjoy before it all becomes a bit too much. It's one of those albums that gives me a headache. I've been told that they're old stuff is good though.

Um. There are too many bands. There isn't one to single out. The genre is too big. Check out the recommendations thread, or suggestions or whatever it's called in the death metal section. There are a bunch of youtube links. Have a listen and see if any of it appeals. Old? New? Melodic? Technical? Brutal? Progressive? Eh...

Re: Your favorite death metal bands?

Ok' date=' I've never gotten into Death Metal, but what's a good introductory band, the undisputed monster of the genre?[/quote'] If I had to recommend just one band, I would pick Morbid Angel. If you want more than one band, check out RO's death metal recommendations thread. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Hi Iceni! Welcome back. @Dave, lately I've been listening to a few bands either from or connected to bands from the recommendations thread: Dead Congregation, Disma (both kind of old-schooly and low-tuned), Ulcerate (Destroyers Of All fucking rules), Mitochondrion (still not too into their vox but the guitar work is killer), Severed Savior (a bit like a more tech-y Suffocation, derivative but enjoyable), Suffocation (new album kicks ass, stuff from the 90s rocks), Anata (who I think you didn't really enjoy - give The Conductor's Departure a chance)...

Re: Your favorite death metal bands?

For Ulcerate I prefer Of Fracture and Failure but that's really just a tone thing' date=' it's almost impossible to meaningfully compare the two albums. Most recently I've also been listening to The Amenta who also have a really eerie techy sound.[/quote'] I dig Occasus from The Amenta, but haven't heard their newer stuff. Flesh is Heir is pretty good on the whole, although it is lacking in parts. I still want The Waspkeeper by Talanas, they're awesome. By the way, I listened to Crimson by Edge of Sanity and I actually quite like it, though not nearly as much as Crimson II.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
