Yes they are but many tours end with Japan, Australia and NZ, or start with NZ, Aus, Japan, it's been that way since Beethoven started touring.

Yeah but little Ludwig was deaf, so they didn't actually fly him around to all those far-away places, they just gave him a carriage ride to a neighboring village and told him it was Japan and Australia or wherever and he trusted his handlers so he had no reason to question them. If he could have heard the concert-goers not speaking in Aussie or Japanese accents then that probably would have given it away.

Two in their top 10 will be in mine, otherwise not a bad list, but not what I would pick.

They're still wankers though. I mean, Watain but not Meshuggah?

I remember from the day that Ferday is a huge Watain fan and he's somewhat of a influencer over there. I'd have to check, but I'll bet he have it an 8.

In the Satanic Christmas spirit of being generous, equanimous, and objective, I should probably give Archenspire another gander and Artificial Brain even though they are not in the MarkM Hark the Heretic Sings Satan Night love zone.

Not a fan of either band but I could at least listen to a Watain album probably.

Only albums I have on their shitty list are: The Chasm, Autopsy, Phobophilic, Supression and of course the band everyone loves to hate: Undeath. Don't think any of those will be making my final list though, unless I were to take it out to a top 50. The Chasm has the best shot.

I don't hate the new BaN either, just haven't spent any time with it.

I used to spin Watain on the reg....would call them a gateway...wouldn't kill me to listen to their new one. Seemed everybody was listening to them at one point. Spect, I should prolly listen to Phobophillic also as I've seen that named bandied about a fair amount. Chasm is saved on my BC to listen to also. I think some of the reviews nail Undeath-it's not revolutionary but accessible and downright catchy for grimey DM and something people sometimes undervalue in extreme metal-fun!

Dammit, all I was trying to do was give Dead1 some Cjrissie spirit, some hope, something good to look forward to and you have to go and ruin it with your facts!!

I can say definitively, without the slightest fear of contradiction, that Mr. Deadly Deadovic of Launceston, Tasmania (you know the guy, says he's got a chrome dome and a face like a bag of smashed crabs) will not now or at any time or place in the future, be witnessing his favorite 90's band, Pantera, play a live concert.

What about half a Pantera and a couple of ring ins?

This would still make me a happy man!

Does anybody really care about Rex Brown, if he's there or not there? Because I could see calling it "Pantera" if just he was absent. But without both of the Abbott bros it's really more of a Pantera cover band. And I get that Deadovic is starved for live metal shows down there on his sleepy little out of the way island, but considering they're charging $155 US ($232 AUD) and up for tickets (at least that's how much they want for the local show here at Giants Stadium) you'd have to be some kind of a fool to shell out that kind of money for a cover band. Unless you just happen to have have money to burn. Because I mean you could stay home crank the volume and watch one of their old concert videos of the actual band  themselves for free! I get that there's no mosh pit or wall of Marshall stacks in your lounge, and no merch table set up on your way to the dunny, but is that stuff really worth $232? You could still headbang and stomp around in your camo shorts and get all sweaty and break shit if that'd make it more realistic and more fun for you.

The actual Pantera live in LA 1992

He has been absent for about a fortnight. He got covid at some festival in South America (I think it was) and immediately flew home to rest missing the last few gigs before Christmas. A lot of those tickets were probably pre-sold and therefore people really didn't have a choice to express their displeasure (if there is such a thing) at him not being there, but the band played on. Going by the crowd numbers no one seems to give a shit that even the Abbotts aren't there because they are still pulling crowds and the audience is going batshit crazy when they start playing.

Coz it is still Pantera, Abbott brothers or not!

I don't really give a shit about the debates people can make, it's not that much different from those who suggest Motorhead was only Lemmy, Phil and Eddie, or Queen can't be Queen without Freddie. Each to their own. I've never been a huge Pantera fan and the remaining two, one of who is not even original, doesn't make that any more likely.

If they want to play, if they want to write new music and they want to do it all under the name Pantera, good luck to them but it's hardly surprising that people are going to shit on the idea when the two most recognised players are no longer in the band and in some reports would be dead set against it.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
