Hi all from the cold dark wastelands of sunny Australia.

Started my metal journey in 1993 after hearing my first black metal album from Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times.
I'm not too fussed about genres of music as long as it is dark or different.

Hoping there are not too many precious SJWs or people with agendas on here.

If we disagree on something, just agree to disagree and move the fuck on ;)

Hi. I don't know exactly what you mean by "SJW" and "agenda" (and I don't care) but thanks for being up front. I have a pretty low tolerance for edgy political bullshit and zero interest in keeping you around if you're going to be a dick. There are probably cooler/less PC boards that you'd like more, but on the other hand you'd be hard pressed to find more knowledgeable metalheads than some of the folks here. Keep the culture wars off the forum and don't stir the pot and maybe it'll work out. If that's going to be a problem for you, then, well, you know what to do.

Okay I'm about 95% convinced this is that NokturnalBoredom guy with a new account, lol.

I have no idea who or what 'NokturnalBoredom' is. You see, people are not that complicated, we may wear different clothes and have different hobbies etc. but deep down, humans are fundamentally the same.
In the context of online communication, there are only so many ways a person can express themselves. What you're seeing here is that for some reason, my way of expressing myself is similar to someone else you've come into contact with before, nothing more complicated than that.
And to add some spice to the mix, do you really think your powers of deduction are so great that you can positively identify a person online based on one post

My guess is he's more worried about people throwing a fit over certain bands more than anything else.

Don't worry man, this isn't a RABM board...as long you keep the overt stuff to a minimum, no ones going to kirk out on you for liking Mgla or Behexen or whatever other band currently has everyone's underwear in a twist

Good, because Mgla is one of my main bands lol

There is no way, no matter how deep you go, that I am the same as GG. He's old and got bad taste in music!!

See Kuke, you're always thinking about me even when I'm sleeping. Can't get me out of your head. But thanks for the laugh first thing in the morning mate. I love how you wrote the first sentence (the set up) then went on to describe yourself in the second. (the punchline) If your herd were ever to get wiped out by mad cow disease or something you might be able to pick up a gig writing jokes.

I think the new guy just wanted to establish himself as someone not to be trifled with, like a convict throwing someone a beating on his first day in prison to establish his rep as a badass. (Badarse?)

You'd think someone joining a new forum would lurk a bit and get a feel for the place to see if it was a good fit for them or not first.

That dude was about 14 and lived somewhere in the States. He's probably earned his first million selling rare records and looks down on all us plebs now!

He was 30, lived in Florida and worked the drive-thru at McDonald's. Was excited that they were paying him $15 an hour to start. He'll become a millionaire when your cows learn to drive the ute and go into town to fetch you cigs and a slab.

Sadly not many others share your confidence in my comedic abilities but I'm just thankful you're not one of these agenda carrying SJW's that would get upset from a little ribbing about how ancient they are.

When I joined I couldn't work out who the biggest guy here was to punch so I had to go the poor comedic and sarcastic route. It's kind of the same outcome, people still look and say "what the f...? Is this dude serious?" but they don't get scared of me.

Was he really that old? I remember Florida and the McD's bit but I thought he was still a teenager living with his mum. He was talking about buying record and starting up his own shop or something too if I remember correctly. Days are over that my cows need to get me a slab and some ciggies, but if they want to take themselves to market, get the shopping, etc I'm happy for them to take a bit more of the workload.

Nah GG, I'm too old to be lurking around like a kid on the first day of school. Its not mystery to me at this stage, things only go one of two ways; everyone is on the same level and doesn't give a fuck about offending sensitive people OR I invariably upset someone and get a permaban.

I guess time will tell how it ends. Aren't you excited? ;)

It was a joke. NokturnalBoredom was a former poster here who, like yourself, really leaned into the whole "I am very badass and nothing offends me" shtick.

I am offended at the thought you'd think I'd get offended!  😜

We're pretty easy going here and generally thick skinned.  I have some pretty objectionable views myself but tend to keep them to myself as this ain't the place for them - we have defence blogs for that kind of thing.

We all play nice and keep it to metal and booze except that one threat we discuss gardening, family and personal shit.  😊

Ah I see, now I have my first opponent, that didn't take long lol. I may have mistaken your joke, but surely that is understandable since it was a joke only those in the know would get, so why get upset and then follow up your explanation with an insult about how my attitude is some kind of 'shtick'?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
