Grave Infestation - Persecution of The Living (filthy Death metal, Canada)

I'd like to think that if @GoatmasterGeneralhad his own death metal band, that it would sound exactly like this, lol. He's free to correct me if I'm wrong, but this essential stuff for connoisseurs of pure filth.

Not sure exactly what I would consider to be the optimal death metal sound. It'd be filthy, savage, brutal and dark certainly, but the exact sound would probably be a bit different than this. Of course you are correct that I do like this Grave Infestation album very much, this is fucking great and I'll probably pick it up. But to me the optimal death metal sound would probably be more along the lines of what you'd get if you threw: Black Curse, Blasphemathory, Diabolical Messiah, Invultation, Black Blood Invocation, Necroblood, Cemetery Urn, Krypts, Desecresy and Dead Congregation in a blender.

MA has this labelled DM but I am calling it Ripping black metal. Either way this slays. Impressive debut full-length...and from San Diego. Hope they have some shows when I get back there.

Black/death maybe, it has elements of both I think. Good shit. I thought I remembered them just opening up one of the days of MDF in that shitty 12:30 slot but now that I go back and check the schedule I see that was Sacrilegia which is a killer black/thrash band from Ireland, not Sacrilega from San Diego. Doesn't really matter because I missed them being sick last weekend and I probably wouldn't have made it down there by 12:30 even if I had been in town.

Yeah you would have. Somehow we dragged our asses down there for them and Necfrofier and it was totally worth it, even though the time slot sucked balls.

Sedimentum is finally dropping a full length "Suppuration Morphogénésiaque"

I definitely would have gone to see Necrofier because one of their shirts is my favorite. I like their music, obviously, but definitely the shirt.

Its sort of funny back whenever MDF was announced and there was a thread I was tempted to finally commit and plan for it, but somehow in the back of my head I had a feeling that I wouldn't be able to go. Sure enough I get sent off on orders and now I am further away still (Guam!). God or Satan don't want me at MDF just yet apparently.

This Sedimentum track is killer. I like the groovey riff to finish it.

Necrofier was really good...bit of a surprise to me, since I wasn't familiar with them, and I had really wanted to see Sacrilegia, so I was going down come hell or high water, but it's tough getting your ass moving by the time day 4 rolls around (though weirdly enough, a combination of Advil and Monster energy drink had me feeling better on day 4 than I did on days 2 and 3).

Is it the shirt with the reaper? That's the one I liked. Unfortunately neither band seemed to have brought any merch...at least none that we could find, which was a damn fucking shame. Missed opportunity too. Merch was selling fast as lightning this year.

Yep - Death Comes for Us All. Good call!

I don't like my chances of surviving 4 days. It will definitely require inhuman amounts of caffeine. I drink coffee like a fiend as it is.

It's usually more about the physical ache for me. First the lower back starts going, then the feet start to wear out. Think we mentioned before, but it's usually somewhere between day 2 and day 3 you start cutting out bands you might otherwise be interested in so you can go sit down and rest for a bit. You'd be fine though...just got to pace yourself and not try to catch every band on your list

...and just to bring the thread back on course

Thrall - Schisms

Australian black metal. Been a few years since their last release, but this is pretty solid

Instant pre-order for me. Their last album was my AOTY for 2020 and the one before that was in my top 3 in 2019 so....... needless to say I'm head over heels excited for this one!

Cruel Force...I have their two full lengths, guess I didn't realize they were from all the way back in 2010 & '11. Would have guessed maybe 2013 or '15, somewhere in there. Love the video though, very German sounding. Reminds me of a more melodic Desaster. I do hope this means there will be a new album coming shortly.

Stellar Tomb...it'd be all but impossible not to compare them to Inquisition, they're so blatantly trying to replicate their sound. Not that I'm complaining, Inquisition is my favorite band of all time so all copycats are welcome to give it a shot. Dig these vocals too even though atmittedly the music isn't nearly as brilliant as the real thing. But still I'm gonna have to pick this demo up.

New release from DDR promo track

Berator - Elysian Inferno, Chicago

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
