I think Overkill's building days are over. Now that they're in their 60's and have learned how to go through the motions and churn out records in DD's home studio they're just trying to hang on and stay relevant enough to sell a few records and play a couple of gigs to keep the lights on, food on the table and gas in the Harley. I know Bobby's wife has a chocolate shop over here in Nanuet NY. Don't know how successful it is, but I guess he could always learn to be a chocolatier if the thrash band thing doesn't work out. I think I remember him saying in an interview one time that he had a side business, that he imports stuff and sells it. He didn't say what kind of stuff though so naturally the mind comes up with all kinds of interesting possibilities. Could be electronics or some kind of food or consumables or maybr sex toys, cigars, men's skin care products or beard oil...who fucking knows?

Cocaine from Columbia is what Bobby imports. He's the next Tony Montana. 😂

nah just kidding.

Wiegedood - There's Always Blood at the End of the Road (Black Metal)

I dug their first couple albums then kinda lost touch with them. The new tracks sound promising. Less second wave-y and little more modern/dissonant sounding. Releases Jan 14.

Véhémence - Ordalies (Black Metal)

New Vehemence album on the way. I really liked their last album and they're one of the better bands doing the melodic, folky "medieval" black metal thing these days. Releases March 8.

Been waiting on this one...glad to see it's getting a somewhat wider release after the last one was basically cassette only to some kind of underground fan club or something. I mean there's underground and then there's "are you kidding me with this shit"

Anyway, these guys kill if you like fuzzy, somewhat melodic black metal

Nocturnal Triumph - s/t

Yeah Zack...those guys are killer. Found them and Haunting Depths a few years back, right around the same time, and though they were both awesome. Unfortunately seems like Haunting Depths fell off the face of the earth after that one album, but Nocturnal Triumphs been killing it ever since.

Still annoyed I had to hit the high seas for their last one though

...Anyway, Eliminator's new one came out today

Shit sorry, I thought I was on the What Are You Listening to thread. Those two albums were from 2012 and 2011 respectively. Just taking a brief break from all the 2021 stuff, I think I have my black metal list pretty well set, I just have to type it up and find album covers. The only '22 album I've got so far is the new Nocturnal Graves because I just couldn't pass it up.

Cannot wait for the new Overkill and Crowbar albums.  Gonna be a great year!  Catching Overkill live on March 12.

March 12th at the Orange Peel in Asheville NC? I think I'm gonna try to catch them the following Saturday in Stroudsburg PA on the 19th. One last time for old time's sake. Just a little annoyed that they have the same opener as last time I saw them, Prong. Not a fan.

I've seen them a ton back in the 80's and early 90's, but I've only seen the modern day Linsk lineup once in 2006 at BB King's in NYC. Had tickets to see them in the city one other time in May 2010 on the Ironbound tour, but we were intentionally coming in late to hopefully miss a few of their 5 opening bands (God Dethroned, Warbringer, Evile, Vader, Woe of Tyrants) and wouldn't you know it there just happened to be a car bombing in Times Square that night and the cops had everything locked down. We made it as far as the police line diagonally across the intersection from the venue. We could see the place and the show was going on as planned, I looked up Youtube videos the next day and the place was absolutely packed. But I guess all those lucky people must have gotten there nice and early because they wouldn't let us cross the police line to go in because the stupid fucking Jeep was parked behind the venue with smoke coming out of the windows.

Overkill- Hello From the Gutter @ Nokia Theatre, NYC, May 1, 2010

Yep that's the show!  I'll be arriving at the Orange Peel earlier in the day and then crashing in Asheville that night before heading home.

Man, I actually heard Blitz tell that story on Loudwire!  It was during one of their episodes of Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?, and Blitz told the entire story of the car bomb incident.  That's crazy that you were there!  From what I recall from his story, the folks who were already in were allowed to remain inside, because authorities didn't want to cause any widespread panic.  But unfortunately, they wouldn't allow anyone else in, which you know firsthand, it sounds like!  May 1, 2010 was my 20th birthday, and I would have loved to catch them then.  Can't wait to see them at the Orange Peel!  It's a fairly small venue, so I'm hoping to catch some sweat from Blitz at some point.  I'm not a Prong fan either, so I'll just be waiting for them to finish their set, so the mighty Overkill can take over!

Can't wait for the new album from Girish and the Chronicles, called "Hail to the Heroes", due for release on February 11.  One of the hardest rocking modern bands around, with a vocalist that stands above almost everyone else.  Good, straight-ahead hard rock 'n roll from India.  If you enjoy that style of music and haven't heard these guys, you're missing out big time.  Horns up!

No snapping fingers or necks for you guys, huh? I liked Prong for a few months in high school but got annoyed with them and moved on pretty quickly, it's probably been at least 25 years since I've even heard them. Honestly had no idea they were still around.

Agreed. I liked that Snap Your Fingers song, but otherwise... Tommy Victor does a fine job with Danzig though. Still prefer John Christ, but Tommy pulls it off pretty well live.

Honestly, tried that Verbum the other day, and while it's perfectly serviceable, it really didn't grab me. I don't know if I was in the wrong mood for it or what, but it became background music pretty fast for me

Funny because its the first time that anything approaching funeral doom did grab me. I like all the elements and execution, but kind of one trick pony to some degree: play really slow, then fast. I can see this providing diminishing returns, but with some polish and attention to detail these guys could get better. There are moments where they are putting together some layers and phrasing that are just poorly edited/mixed imo. But there are some ideas there, and I love the vibe and overall sound.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
