What are some death metal bands and/or albums you’ve recently come by that have impressed you? Can be new and old.

For me there’s been,

Heads For The Dead

Pneuma Hagion - Voidgazer

Warfather - The Grey Eminence

Nemesium - Continua

Voidceremony - Entropic Reflections Continuum: Dimensional Unravel

Nice topic. I haven't been listening to as much death metal as usual lately, but I've found new enjoyment in some stuff I didn't really dig before. The most recent one is the latest Blood Incantation album - I was blown away by their live set but something about the recording of "Starspawn" keeps me at arm's length no matter how much I try. "Hidden History" connected immediately but I didn't revisit it until a few weeks ago, and I have to say I think it's a fucking masterpiece. Love the pacing, the melodies, the atmosphere... Everything comes together.

A surprise older album in rotation lately is Atheist's "Elements". Never liked this album, always considered it a lackluster step down from the pinnacle of "Unquestionable Presence", and then I put it on for a laugh earlier this year and was blown away. It's phenomenal and it just took me this long to put aside my first impressions and realize that.

I can relate. There's been a few that I've listened to previously and didn't like it then gone back for another go and really like it. Jungle Rot - Self Titled is one of those and that Atheist album happens to be one too. Still yet to give it a good spin though.

That Void ceremony record caught me off guard as I no longer make any effort to keep up with current year releases (it's a thankless task I have discovered that just tires me out), but a chance play of it on stream got me hooked.  Kind of liking the Death references in the sense that they don't just make up the whole piece, the vocals are out of sync with the progressive leanings and it is mainly the fretless bass work of Damon Good that reminds me of Steve DiGiorgio's Death era work.

Black Curse Endless Wound was another recent find that had me reminiscing on Swallowed and Grave Miasma releases in terms of death metal but also some real Cultes des Ghoules black metal atmospherics too.  Was impressed with the debut from death/doom band Atramentus this year as well.  Stygian really takes the arduous and lengthy musings of Bell Witch and creates a really well-balanced three-track album that feels like an atmospheric triumph.

Ah, Jungle Rot, there's a band I haven't listened to in years and years. Used to really enjoy them for meat and potatoes DM. Honestly, "didn't like it, then gone back for another go and really like it" is the story of my journey through metal, there are so many great albums that I just didn't connect with right away. In some cases it's taken me years to come around.

For sure, man. It was like that for me with Obituary. I had pretty much written them off and a friend would go an about them years later so I gave them another chance. Still took a bit to warm up to, but now I like a fair bit of their material.

Sorry for the way late reply.  I probably would not call them that, though I am no expert on death metal subgenres.  They sound more like traditional death metal (no technicality, etc.) to my ears.

No problem. Just asked to see whether I could be bothered checking them out or not hahaha. I'm not a fan of brutal slam death.
