Your most Favorite Most Underrated Metal Bands

Hello, I love to get obscure metal bands and want to promote the love of such.
I will start by listing a few of my favorites, please list the bands and add a description next to it.

NOTE: If you really also enjoy a band you know or in, please least list it on the bottom and post at least two other bands above it, while mentioning your connection to it. Redacted due to the fact these are wanted to go in the promotion zone. Though I suggest give it a look though due to it can be a good source for underground.

I will also add it was pointed out that since there is one of these threads just for black metal, I wanted one just for any type of Metal since I like many sub genres. I Hope this is turns out to be a good thread for those who want many types of the underground metal to be suggested in all one thread.

I will start with these three and perhaps post more later.
Svartby (Folk metal)
Armagedda (Black Metal)
Turmion kätilöt (Industrial Metal)

Fair warning, we already have one of these threads going for black metal bands in particular, and we might have a couple others floating around as well, so this thread may get merged at some point.

Also, if you're in an obscure or underrated band that you enjoy, do not list it here. Your post will get deleted and you might get banned. We only allow that in the Promote Yourself section.

One band that isn't particularly obscure but I almost never hear mentioned is Furia (POL). Their first two albums are modern black metal masterpieces, and they've been blazing their own idiosyncratic path ever since. I don't like everything they've done but I have a lot of respect for the way they never seem to play it safe.

I guess I'd have to say Vore and Disma. They straddle the sweet spot between Death and Doom that I particularly enjoy. More recently I discovered Konvent who also find that same sweet spot between Death and Doom. Anther recent favourite is Green Lung. I'm still unsure what category of metal they occupy. Not that it really matters I guess.

I'll add a few bands as well.

Astralium (Symphonic/Power metal) (Italian)

Example track: Rising Waves From The Ocean

Dialith (Symphonic Power metal) (American)

Example track: Quiver of Deception

Fearless (Melodic Death Metal) (China)

Example track: Lord of Twilight

Serpent (Melodic Death Metal) (Japan)

Example track: Bloody Gates

The former two are very fresh bands with only an album (Full-length) each to their names. The latter two are obscure to the point where I am unsure if they are even active anymore.

Also good idea with adding the song recommendations next to the bands!
Wow Astralium  is a bit like Nightwish in some ways!
Dialith, has some well written parts to it
Fearless, adds some interesting instruments thrown in which I rather enjoyed.
Serpent, adds some of that COB feel that I miss while still being their own thing.

Alright Some more recommendations

Draconian (Goth Metal)
Song Recommendation Silent Winter.

FEJD (Folk Metal)
Song recommendation Härjaren

Ajattara (Death Metal) (Finland)
Song Recommendation Verivalta (for a funny strange song they did that I hilarious to me is Keuhkot its acoustic metal)

I'll check out what you just posted.

On another note, so you like Bodom? I do too! If so you should definitely try "Darkness Swallowed" by Fearless. It is not posted anywhere individually on youtube, so this is a link to the full album. Song starts at 15:52

The Chorus of this song is pretty much as CoB as it can get without being them, and I love it for it. I wanted to link it originally, but a little clumsy cuz full album link.

Draconian I quite liked. They are like a blend of Gothic, Doom and Symphonic, all genres which suit me well.

FEJD might be my favourite so far. They have a really nice blend of catchy fun "storytime", while still being heavy enough to where my smile can't be "too broad" ?

I was surprised to find that the Ajattara vocalist is old Amorphis vocalist, small world. Verivalta was a nice song for me with the sort of really slow burn approach. Plus slow and heavy with lots of keys will almost always work for me. Keuhkot makes me picture a bunch of Shamans trying to do their thing, but they are too high to do so. Maybe not my style, but definitely fun ?

I'll add a little more myself

Dawn of Solace (Melodeath/Melodoom) (Finland)

Example track: Lead Wings

Aephanemer (Symphonic Melodeath) (France)

Example track: Bloodline

Bob Catley (Heavy Metal) (England)

Example track: Someday Utopia

First band was formed by the lead behind "Before the Dawn" and have a similar style. The second is a female fronted Melodeath band. Relatively fresh band (2013), this being from their sophomore album. Bob Catley is his project, though he is more known as the vocalist of Magnum. Man was already in his mid 50' when he sang the example track above.

Yeah Ajattara is pretty great, and I like the "Shaman" vibe they have in that song, at first I was like what the hel is this now i am like YES what the hel is this XD

Fearless is pretty good I think I heard them a while back.
Dawn of Solace is like a more mellow My Dying Bride to me.
Aephanemer has some of that new wintersun flair and also has a female vocalist, they are nice to hear.
Bob Catley is a nice nod to early heavy metal

More Recommendations

Alkonost (Russian Folk Metal)
Example Track:  The Indiscernible Path|

Septic Flesh (Melo Death symphonic Doom Metal)
Example Track: Sunlight Moonlight

Myrkgrav (Folk Blackend Metal)
Example Track: De to Spellmenn

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
