Goth

So I know next to nothing about goth. A few things I don't like about it but I definitely think they have a lot in common with metal. A lot of overlap within the 2 scenes.

I noticed they have their own dating apps/social networking etc. I really would like to date a goth chick. Every girl I've ever been with has hated my music and I hated theirs so that wouldn't be anything new so that is neither a plus nor a minus, just the same. But I do see a few plus sides- I think goths are more likely to be into horror (which I am obsessed with) and 2, I honestly don't like makeup, I prefer the natural look on girls except with goth chicks. The first crush I ever had was on Elvira, the breasts definitely have something to do with it but not just that, pale skin, dark makeup, black hair and dark dresses etc is a turn on for me. Even as a kid of a very young age, I loved horror chicks like Elvira and Herman Munster's wife.

The last and biggest plus, far better than looks and common interests- They seem very misunderstood and outsiders to society as a whole. Possibly people who could understand me as I never fit in anywhere, no one agrees with me on anything, a lot of people instantly hate me or ask me ridiculously absurd questions upon meeting me etc. From what I hear, they are in the same boat as me. No woman in my life has ever understood me. I'd really like a girl who understands me or at least just accepts my weirdness.

Also I have to say, I know that I am not goth. I'm not into their music, I don't wear makeup and don't plan on it either.

What do you think about goth and goths? Are any of you goths? Has anyone dated a goth? Any thoughts?

I see on youtube that there is a lot of guys with a goth fetish (just want to pick up goth chicks) but I think I have a far better reason for it than they do.

Huh. Well, I used to hang out with a bunch of goth kids and go dancing and stuff. I really enjoy some of the music. The scene where I grew up revolved around a couple of goth nights at different clubs, but it was a melting pot, metal was welcome too. My experience is, you take the looks and music out of the picture, we're all just people like anybody else. Shared counterculture is nice but it doesn't have much to do with how compatible you'll be in a real relationship. Also, being misunderstood doesn't necessarily make people any more understanding when it comes to others, and you'll run into people who are playacting at "being an outcast" for whatever reason... Not to mention that a lot of outwardly "normal" folks feel like outsiders too. In short, I don't think you're either more or less likely to find what you're looking for in the goth scene.

You're probably right. I watch a lot of weird stuff on youtube and I saw a lot of videos about goths (usually in small towns) ranting about no one understanding them, so that;s why I was thinking that. But I guess for every 1 person ranting on youtube there is probably 10 people who are the exact opposite of them.

I honestly don't fit in anywhere. Every job I've ever had, I try to be nice to new people but there is always at least 1 person who hates me instantly. I'm not talking about just women, even with guys I have a hard time making friends, I have completely different interests, nothing in common with them etc.

Now that I think about it, ever since I got clean I have had this problem. When I used to do drugs I had lots of people to hang out with and no problem meeting new women. Even though my social life was better, everything else was worse though.

Unless it's a typo on your part, that's a negative Req. You couldn't make a goth girl happy or she would cease to be goth - that's philosogothophy 101.

My wife must be a goth then...

Aren't goth girls only goth girls because they can't get boyfriends from the football team and can't be bothered being feminist lesbians?

If she is, then you're lucky because it's through no fault of your own that she's unhappy.

That could be. Depression from rejection, yet too sad to be angry at men.

Don't tell me you missed my Type O Negative reference? That was specifically for you. Hopefully your subconscious mind got it. Or else my hypnotic hand is losing its touch.

I really had no idea what your "typo... negative, req" statement meant. I guess I just made a typing mistake somewhere. Why, is there some significance to the phrase? I'll try to steel my observation skills forthwith.

In reference to making said Cinnamon Girl (it's an alright song of theirs) happy, I wrote about you writing how you could instead of how I thought you couldn't or could not (the 'not' being the bands initials reversed) make her happy. Meh, well past October-rusty, my efforts were dead again, it seems.

The 'not' being a reversal of TON is just too subtle for successful internet transmission, but the rest of your post: yes, I understood and enjoyed it enormously. You can rest easy knowing that your philological genius is appreciated worldwide.

What the hell is this thread even about?

A lonely Serb looking for trouble, singing black black black black no. 1.

I'm not even really joking.

So a regular post from you then.

I've always loved the Serbs and their romantic sensibility. Lots of good christian women there, I hear tell.

I went looking for trouble - when I decided I was going to watch a Serbian film - and boy, I found her. Nothing Christian nor romantic about it.

No italics this time.

Well there is gothic metal: Lacuna Coil, Tristania, Siebenburgen, Tiamat, (ugh) Type O Negative... but metal and goth are worlds apart to be completely honest. I listen to a lot of gothic rock (Joy Division, Bauhaus, the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Horror Vacui, etc) but it's in now way even close to metal. I think aside from gothic metal, the closest that you would get to it would be black metal in terms of the aesthetics and fashion.

Like I said, I listen to a lot of gothic rock, but I myself have never really been a part of the goth scene. Sure, I've gone to a goth club a few times and knew goth girls, but the goth lifestyle doesn't really do much for me outside of the music. Goths are weird these days anyway, they aren't the old school goths that listen to any of the bands that I mentioned.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
