Will singing ever make a comeback?

I love agro vocals too but I have really been missing old classic metal/hard rock with singing. I grew up with stuff like ACDC, Ozzy, Van Halen etc. The only scene I see any singing in is power metal and I am not into euro power metal with keyboards. Plus I see every power metal singer as having the exact same singing style like as if all of them are trying to sound exactly like Queensryche or Fates Warning. The only metal genre with singing, every singer sounds the same to me. Before hard rock died out, there was a lot more variation in singers voices.

I'm just dying for something new with singing. It doesn't even have to be melodic like Dio or Bruce Dickinson. I'd take rough singing like  Bon Scott, Lemme or Udo. Some original singers with their own sound would be even better.

Do you think singing/hard rock will ever make a comeback? Is there any good heavy stuff out there with original singers? Please post links if you've got anything.

Growling is definitely de rigour.

There are plenty of amazing bands with clean singing though. Have you heard the ‘Prequelle’ album by Ghost? Great Ozzy and Dio vibes. 

Katatonia, Crashdiet, Blind Guardian. They all offer some  great singing across different genres. And there are heaps of new bands on YouTube that fit the bill.

You’re right though, we don’t seem to have the equivalent of an Ozzy or a Dio at the moment. There are still old dudes going, but that sort of music is pretty niche at the moment. 

There’s definitely stuff out there, it’s just largely under the radar.

I have found a few new traditional metal  bands that have good singers- Midnight Priest and Sabire

I've been listening to old Excess a lot lately too. This dudes voice is like crack to my ears.

Good topic but I have to say I don't listen to a lot of stuff aside from power and prog metal with purely clean singing. I like Howling Sycamore, and I think Jason McMaster sounds incredible in that band, but his voice is an acquired taste. I really like the first Pagan's Mind album as well, but that's the "Euro-power with keyboards" sound you don't enjoy. Isole has some great stuff, especially Bliss Of Solitude, if you're into melodic doom. Primordial might be worth a look, I'm not huge on their songwriting but Nemtheanga has an awesome rough singing style. Some friends of mine called Marrowfields are putting out an album soon with great rough cleans in a similar style.

 I don't hate everything with keyboards but I prefer them used sparingly. For me when keyboards are in your face it takes away from the heaviness/guitars but hey everyone has their own tastes. As far as power metal, the old US power metal to me is good. I'm not really into prog but there are prog bands I like. I like all of Voivod's albums and some power/prog like Queensryche, Fates Warning, etc. I always thought of Meshuggah to be like prog/thrash but people started calling it something else. I like the progy stuff I hear out of King Diamond too like on the Conspiracy album.

 

I just looked this up right now. I like it. It's definitely something different. His voice is good, to me it's kind of typical, there are a lot of bands with similar vocals, but it is done really well here. The guitars just going off in whatever direction they want here and there is really good to me, unpredictable.

I didn't like Ghost at all until their latest album 'Prequelle'. That's why I recommended it to you. It's less 70s inspired and more Ozzy I reckon. 'Prequelle' is one of the great clean singing metal albums in my view. Waaay better than previous work, including the guitar tone which is to die for.

Unless you’re 15 years old, probably best to steer clear of the videos/image though lest it puts you off the tunes.

So I'm listening to it right now on youtube. I have to admit it is a lot more metal than I remember them sounding like. I do hear the Ozzy influence in the guitars/keyboards and I also hear some numetal in the riffs (in one song). I had to skip the songs See the Light and Pro Memoria so far, it's just too mellow for my taste.

I have to say, I think they did get heavier and it is more my taste this new album. The vocals aren't my thing and I have no idea why. I love Snake from Voivod and the vocal style is similar, maybe its Snake's accent why I like it more when he does it. I was just thinking, I would say this dudes voice is in between Snake and Depeche Mode. Maybe the vocals will grow on me. Love it or hate it, the vocals are probably the most original out there for this generation based on what I've heard so far.

I like the song Miasma but that saxophone part is a bonerkiller for me, at least it's at the end of the song.

It's a Sin is the best song I heard on here so far. I'm still listening to it.

So far I'm gonna say it's ok, there are some really good melodies in there. Still it's a little too keyboardy for me and I'm not too much into the vocals. They are a lot better than I remember them when they first came out. My main complaint with their older stuff is it wasn't heavy enough and too Pink Floyd-ish. It's not just this band, even Ozzy has a lot of songs that are too mellow for me. Like Goodbye to Romance, I always skip it. I tolerate it live though. Mama I'm Coming Home I don't skip but it is far from my favorite song etc.

I think Ghost is one of those bands you can put on when you have a girlfriend who hates metal, you put this on to avoid her putting on Mariah Carey or rap. it's a bullet dodger.

 

If you are really into this, I think you might really like Voivod's Angel Rat album. It is very mellow prog rock and I am very picky about mellow stuff. usually when something doesn't have the heavy, it loses me immediately. Angel Rat and Outer Limits by Voivod are exceptions for me.

Back in 91 or 92 was the last time gimmicks really got me and it was Gwar and Green Jelly. I still dig their gimmicks. I'm sure you know Gwar. Green Jelly is a joke band in the same vein only a lot catchier, this is Maynard from Tool's first band. Here's the best song Rock n Roll Pumpkin video.

In my opinion this is the best vocals ever. I still love this song after all these years, and that solo is like Viagra for me, instant boner.

I’m a huge Ozzy fan, I love all his solo stuff. Great call on ‘Secret Loser’ by the way. Wonderful song.

There have been a lot of albums featuring "singing" that I have really enjoyed this year...

Big Business, Black Sites, Book of Wyrms, Candlemass, Latitudes, Lochness, Magic Circle, Sacred Reich, Spirit Adrift & The Offering have all released great albums featuring "singing" front & center in their approach.

There's a black metal band from the Nidrosian scene called Mare that has a vocalist who does some singing.  Quite artfully done, I might add.

Vocals start around 1:40.  Really good stuff.  The Nidrosian scene is interesting in that you can get some really crazy kvlt lo-fi shit, then some really polished darkness like Mare.
