1349

I think it's a crime this band doesn't have its own thread yet, so I'm starting one.

Anyone else hear the new single? I've been waiting rather impatiently for these guys to put something new out and this doesn't disappoint. It's better than I was expecting it to be and I'm happy the production isn't an ultra compressed wall of indistinguishable sound that like 99.9% of bands are doing nowadays. This is by far the most excited I've been about new music in 3 or 4 years at least. Can't wait to hear the new album.

Nice idea for a thread.

Like a lot of people I got caught up with 1349 when Frost joined, and I own 'Liberation', 'Beyond the Apocalypse' and 'Revelations of the Black Flame'.

I can't say I really love any of them, although I quite like 'Beyond...', even though I rarely listen to it. I didn't gel with 'Revelations...' at all and found it too experimental for my taste. The CDs sort of sit there in my collection and I look and them, pick them up, flip through the booklet, then put them back and play something else.

The new song is pretty cool. I don't dislike it, but at the same time it just seems to exist... there's not a lot of evil atmosphere or emotional riffs going on there. It kind of clatters along. I do enjoy it, and I read in the youtube comments(!) that it is one part of a group of musical interpretations of a Munch painting in various genres that have been commissioned by the Norwegian government. That's a really clever and cool thing to do, and I'd be interested in hearing the other songs to be honest.

So yeah, I guess I dig 1349, but they've never really blown me away. What are your favourite releases from these lads?

Yeah, I was kind of surprised by that. I personally don't mind a bit more melodic approach, although I kind of feel like the opening and closing riff were kind of just tacked on to make the song more...I don't know...palatable? I guess what's important to me is that they still maintain their signature despite the more melodic (dare I say progressive?) aspects, because nearly all of my favorite bands have thrown away what made them unique in order to "evolve" into a generic sound. This makes me even more curious about what the new album is going to sound like, in any case.

I don't think I could pick a favorite album from them. It's true they don't really tread any new ground as far as the genre in question, and I probably like them a bit more than I would otherwise simply because Frost is behind the kit. I guess if I had to pick a favorite, maybe Hellfire?

That being said, I believe this band is very much an acquired taste. The first time I ever heard any of their material it was almost unlistenable, if that makes any sense. But I became enamored with their sound and couldn't stop listening and now they're one of my favorite current black metal outfits. I remember hearing Liberation for the first time and I immediately imagined Dante's Inferno or something, the atmosphere was just incredible. Also I've been dying to see these guys live for years and have never gotten the chance. From the videos I've seen they put on one hell of a live show (pun intended?)

yes their single are absolutely amazing.i am feel if they're little bit change into more "atmospheric black" music direction. but their guitar works always impress me. and also don't forget to Frost still kicking ass while he performing not so brutal like their earlier album on this song but still impress me.sadly it just new EP not a full-length but i hope they will release new album soon

I read an interview back in 2017 where Archaon was talking about how they were beginning work on a new full length. Also I think they mentioned back in the summer that the album would probably be out this year(?) but I can't remember what the source was. But I'm assuming if they've been writing new material there should be a new album soon. It's been ages since Cauldron.

I listen to a lot of different music so I don't care so much about sub-genres or if they change their sound a bit. I'm genuinely just happy they're still around. They're one of a declining number of bands whose new material interests me, and one of the only bands I'd pay good money to see as their live show still offers something valuable in my opinion other than being a nostalgia act.

yes agreed. they've lot changes their musical direction since few years back.when their last of 2 album they're more went to technicality side's on their music.but who's care about sub-genres labeled They're still kicking ass and i am very like their entire discography. and this is can be prove if 1349 aren't generic black metal typical while just put same formula on every albums.

Been on a 1349 kick lately and i'm busy revisting all their albums at the moment. To me 1349 is one of the few bands that is keeping Norwegian black metal spirit alive. Their sound is just so utterly relentless and brutal like a jackhammer to the skull. I first started listening to them, like most people probably, because Frost is in the band.

I really like the way they are heading with the newer material. The last two albums were a little bit more melodic and not just non stop blast beats. I even love the much hated "Revelations of the Black Flame" album. I can understand why many fans dislike it but there are some really atmospheric songs on that album. But regardless these guys have been improving with each album in my opinion. The new single also sounds quite promising and makes me look forward to the new record which will hopefully follow soon.

I had the pleasure of seing them live back in 2014 in Oberhausen, Germany while they were doing a small club tour through Europe. It was without a doubt one of the best and most insane performances i've ever seen. Ravn had a stage presence like i've never seen before screaming like a maniac and looking like he was ready to beat up the front row audience. Also Frost did his fire breathing act at the beginning of the show and lit the ceiling of the club (more like a basement actually) on fire which was covered with those cardboard eggboxes which  of course caught on fire. The first two song were just chaos while half the audience was choking on smoke and the fire extinguisher powder ? After the show i managed to snag a poster which i had signed by the band. I only recently got it framed for a place in my man cave.

They are one of the most promising modern black metal bands out there. Yes they have had a missed step or two along the way but which band hasn't? Their sound pays homage to what has come before without losing any originality. They sound like a contemporary of bands like Emperor, Mayhem, and Darkthrone rather then a band hero worshipping them. Really should get more of their albums.

1349 dropped their new single today called "Through Eyes of Stone" from their upcoming EP which will be released August 16th. I was hoping for a new full lenght album but with these guys i´ll take whatever i can. New song sounds good so far, still has that typical breakneck speed but also a nice slower passage in the middle. Enjoying the more melodic approach like with the last album.

The ceiling catching fire is hilarious. Great moments in metal.

As for 1349, I need to hear the new material. They just haven’t offered anything that moves me... yet.

Oh yeah, and that poster is awesome. Nice pick-up.

@Benjaminc81 Sick poster. Love your story about them, although Frost setting the ceiling on fire immediately reminded me of the Station nightclub tragedy with Great White years ago. Would be like...the most metal way to die, though.

(Btw Frost has one of the coolest autographs I've ever seen but it took me forever to figure out what Ravn's was supposed to be lol.)

I'm impressed with the new single. "Dodskamp" did make me a tiny bit nervous, but "Through Eyes of Stone" kicks ass. Sick riffs, sick drumming, sick vocals. Hopefully they'll follow up their EP with a new full-length in the near future.

The new full-length drops on October 18, called The Infernal Pathway. They've also released another new song from the album:

All three songs they've released so far from this album sound completely different from each other and I really don't know what to think. The only one that I really enjoy is "Through Eyes of Stone". Not that the other two are bad - not at all - but they're really channeling their inner thrash influences on some of this stuff, seriously...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
